Also Sam Alexis can definitely hold his own vs tougher centers. He’s a force lol

He was the odd man out in an albeit very good Florida front court rotation last season coming off a lower leg injury which is always a lingering concern with big men. I wouldn't feel comfortable with just Alexis and Bailey as the only two experienced front court players and then having to rely on someone like Leo Curtis to log major minutes in the event of an injury. There is a very serious sell of ~20 mpg to guys like Federiko and Miller, which is right in their wheelhouse. Unless we're out of money, would be disappointing not to land one of them or someone of a similar skillset.

Agreed. Definitely need one more experienced/playable big for depth reasons alone anything else is just icing on the cake

seems like this will be the case - hope we’ll be ok vs serious post players

I can't imagine who could have stated this

Some of you complain about the Big Ten not being able to compete in the tournament due to antiquated style of play. But as soon as you have a coach that is attempting to run a more modern style of play with a modern roster you begin to complain about the lack of big men. It doesn't make sense.

Let Coach worry about who is playing what position. If we see issues next year, we can voice our complaints in the "Fire Coach Devries" thread. :)

Lol.

You can still play a modern offense and have rim protector big(s) who can rebound on both ends of the floor (see the national champion Florida Gators)

Again, I think the concern with the 5 spot this coming year is entirely based on the defensive end. Not every good 5 is a high usage, post centric player and there are plenty of bigs with size who can defend the interior and protect the rim without demanding a paint touch every time down.

Yes exactly.  It's not about back to the basket 5, it's really just a defense issue as to who is going to guard the Purdues/Michigans that have multiple big men that will dominate us inside the paint if we don't have anyone that can guard them.  I look forward to the new type of play we will be seeing.  I am just hoping we get another big or two that can protect the rim but doesn't need the ball in their hands a ton.

You still need to get through the Big 10 season. We’re not going to play through the post like a Mike Woodson team, but you still need big men who can hit the boards and provide interior defense. “Modern roster” doesn’t mean no bigs. You want a versatile roster that can play multiple ways. We won’t need defensive bigs for every game. Sometimes we’ll be fine with Bailey at the 5. But there will be matchups throughout the season that we’ll want big men for. And it’s not even solely about guarding other teams’ post players. You also want bigs for rim protection against guards/wings coming into the paint.

Shows me we are committed to getting a shot blocker, so that’s a good sign in my opinion

Does this mean we are not confident in the others we are after or maybe the others are because we were not confident in getting him.

Sure, ideally we’d land an elite defender/rebounder/rim runner but it’s not the necessity that people are acting like it is. “We need it for the B1G”, for… TKR? Cluff? Those guys still have to guard our guys.

As a simple example: Houston was in the championship game and their tallest player who got minutes was 6’8”. It’s completely reasonable to go into the season with less size and to still be a very good team.

If we have the ability to land an elite guy cool, otherwise I’d rather run with Bailey at the 5 than getting some guy who fits a mold but is less skilled overall.

I hope coach has a plan for teams that have an advantage in the paint...which will be many at this point...

I have zero doubt that is on his mind and there is a plan (scheme, recruits, etc)

If our new coach doesn’t realize the potential post issues with our current lineup, issues that are clear even to internet couch warriors/coaches like us, then we made a massive hiring error.

Saw Federiko is asking for 2M and a lot of people do not think he is worth that, Baba Miller slow playing a lot and is in no rush

Wow, 2M?   That is crazy.

Any news on Curtis?

Again, I'm not fixated on height. I've never mentioned height in any of these arguments. Houston had three 6'8-6'9 interior bigs who could all wall up opposing defenders, protect the rim, and were relentless on the glass on both ends of the floor. That's what we need. Sam Alexis (who is also 6'8) is the only player on the roster that even comes close to fitting that mold. That's not enough. Bailey isn't a serviceable 5 for a P5 team for 15 mpg, let alone 25-30...he doesn't have any of those defensive traits.

I use names like Baba Miller and Federiko Federiko because they fit that mold...they just so happen to be 7 foot tall. Those are names that have been directly linked with Indiana.
