I get it, and am not arguing that we are getting value for the money or that Woody is doing a good job, but the “money theme” slides into calling the players paid mercenaries etc.

The entire Louisville team is new. Raise your hand if you think they are playing for the love of the Ville with no concern of getting paid.

Sure they are but I look at a team like wisconsin who looks really good so far and there's no way those guys are getting paid anywhere near what Woodson paid for the new guys he brought in. The return on the investment so far looks awful.

I'm half tempted to check out twitter and read all the chest thumping comments after the massive win. I'm guessing alot of were back baby stuff. Tyme has to be on cloud nine today.

I think Dolson will make a great hire when it’s time for him to do so. His hire of Cignetti makes me believe he’ll look for the same character traits, and often times a leader like that can will his team to success even if the talent isn’t as good. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard!

You are answering my post with a point I’m not making.

I’m not stating that the ROI is good or that Woody is doing a good job.

I don’t however, get the many money/mercenary posts when all the other schools are doing the same (even if they don’t have as much $$ at their disposal). If a guy takes less money to play at NC State, as an example, because he has less  market value, does that make him less of a “mercenary” ?? 

The fact that we have one of the highest NIL budgets, with mediocre results, will help end Woodys tenure.

I think your statement confirms his statement.  I think the mercenary comment maybe coming from the fact that Woodson’s lack of be able to recruit more than one HS recruit last year and this year has resulted in him bailing out by using the NIL, I think that is what Mercenaries are.  Last resort and pay for hire!  Just my opinion!  I am sure majority of schools didn’t pay half as much that IU did and could be having just as good of results, if not better.

Dolson, in spite of giving Woody a million dollar raise, isn’t stupid and I trust he will try to replicate the Cig template.

Cig was a brilliant  hire but there was also a little luck involved as there are plenty of examples of guys having pristine mid-major resumes that did not successfully make the jump to a power school (also plenty that did have success).

I just hope to hell the basketball gods allow us to hire a winner as these decades of mostly bad/mediocre teams is really wearing me down.

Most of the IU football starters are portal guys. Are the IU football players simply “mercenaries”? “ I just don’t get labeling individual transfer players as mercenaries when we don’t know the primary motivation of each of those individual players.
 

And yes, I agree that other teams are doing better with lower payrolls which is why I repeatedly say our ROI is not good.

I think you are missing the point!  I’m not calling anyone a mercenary but I think the way he was using above is a reflection on how MW is using them.  I could be wrong but I think that was a direct statement about Woodson’s recruiting ability.  I just provided a type of definition, which sort of fits IMO

Assuming he is allowed to make a hire. Just how in the world does he get around quinn if Woodson say goes 11-9 in conference and squeaks into the tourney. There is no way quinn is letting his buddy get fired with an over .500 record in the conference. I guess they could try and talk him into quitting I suppose
