SIAP, but like years past, woody is doing hockey subs. I think he does this just give some guys a run now, so if/when they play in conference/tourney, they have some experience.   Nobody likes it and it’s unorthodox, but it’s the only logical reason I can think of.  He doesn’t want to play 8 guys all season.  
 

He seems to shorten the bench come January, so hopefully it’ll happen again this year.

The “compromise” by Dolson to let this go down this way saved us some good cash on the buyout. Lot of litigation today. Make no mistake about it, this was not Woody’s decision to retire.

OR... he still has no clue what he's doing... yeah, I'm going with that.

Crean's a better coach than Woodson, period, he couldn't win consistently but could sometimes have a decent run even if the Final Four was a fluke.

I do think he'd be better in the NIL era, especially with an assistant that focuses on defense.

This has been discussed a lot in the IU and CBB media, as well as here. MW still somehow does not understand the NET and how short the season is. We simply cannot afford to beat teams like this well below the line. He has no comprehension of how teams on the bubble get into the tournament. Take UCONN for example. Hurley was straight up disgusted with his team post game- after a 35 point win. It’s simply another data point that MW thinks it’s the NBA and is not qualified for this job. Full stop.

One of the issues with Crean is that he didn't listen to his assistants. Like Woody, Crean had a massive ego. He could not let himself defer to an assistant on a different way to coach defense. 

Time often heals old wounds. I get that. But Crean would still be coaching at Georgia or at least coaching somewhere if he was half as good as our memories have distorted him.

I liked your post because IU has proven to be woefully inept at evaluating and reeling in a talented basketball coach.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like this to be Woody's last year, and this may be splitting hairs, but I'd give the edge to him over Archie.

Crean wasn't anything special as a coach, but he's better than the two since. It's more an indictment of them than a compliment of Crean.

I’ll give you that.  Both massive failures so kinda difficult to guage. Archie might have been worse simply because there was legit hope

Crean was definitely worse than Sampson as well as better than both Mike and Woodson. I wouldn't say that Miller was better than Woodson, however. Woodson isn't very good but he's still an upgrade after the disaster that Miller was

I’m not advocating Crean to comeback but I think he’s a definite upgrade over Woodson and with the transfer portal and NIL he could possibly win more consistently!  Woodson just flat out sucks and is a legend in his own mind!  If this team plays as bad as they did in their last game, they will lose against Louisville

He had the transfer portal at his next stop and it didn't work out for him.
