They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Yes Scott, it’s much better for IU’s perception for the media to write articles trashing IU for sucking on the court. If a coach doesn’t want to come to IU because he wants the chance to suck for several years before he’s judged, that’s not a guy I’d ever want. There is quite literally zero reason why it would take a coach more than 3 years to have things trending in the right direction at IU with NIL and the transfer portal. This isn’t football where you have 75+ guys on the roster. You can transform a roster overnight if you want to.

Just saying people wonder why we don't get the top coaches when we have openings. Some of it is do to tbe perception of this fan base being impatient and that IU goes through coaches at a high rate

How dare IU operate like a program that wants and expects to win. No, bad coaches have to be given a decade+ in the name of "stability" even if it's not earned.

Nevermind that IU is the only program so poorly run that they'd hire a guy in his 60s with no college experience and hadn't been a HC in a decade.

A portion of the fanbase is perfectly happy filling the lovable loser role in college basketball and can’t fathom fans having higher expectations than that. Including the administration. Winning is hard. It’s much easier to sit back, collect a profit, and blame the fanbase for having expectations.

I have been a live for 3 championships and 6 final fours so I am not accepting mediocrity.

Sure you are. You post all the time about how you don’t want IU to do the things other successful programs do to win, and you say anyone who disagrees isn’t a ‘true fan.’. Hasn’t exactly worked out the past 25 years for IU doing things that way, has it?

I remember the graphic about IU being one of the most ‘profitable’ athletic programs. How about they actually use that profit. Offer $6 million a year, explain to coaches that you’re dropping the red tape and are ready to play ball. Guarantee that lands IU a dude.

But, they’ll never do that. So we get lectures about our unreasonable expectations.

So as a fan what have you done to try to get changes made. I have at least emailed the AD with my displeasure of the coaching instead of just bitching about it on a message board

I don’t buy IU gear, I don’t buy tickets, and I don’t watch games. IU fans can vote with their wallets. As long as the athletic program makes money off IU basketball they’re happy. They’re not incentivized to make changes. If fans stopped spending their money? That would wake the administration up.

Want to officially add Nate Oats back on my wishlist.

I actually dislike the guy a lot but he’s another one that just finds a way to win. Chris Beard is the cheaper and better version I think….

Lol

Would love to get Nate Oats. Had forgotten about him. Great coach.

Report earlier in the week UL looking at him. I figured Alabama paid him enough he was content to stay put and maybe he is, but if he’s poachable you gotta give it a strong thought.

Tough coach. Winner. Great recruiter. Done it in a major conference. Checks most of the boxes.

A lot of national media don't agree with you. Also fans haven't been patient because they start calling for the coaches head by year two.
There's a solution. Don't suck by year 2 or 3. So fans should be fine with bad coaching/results so that the national media thinks we are patient?

Has any coach actually said that or is it purely speculation on your part? I'm guessing it's the latter.

That's a call IU should 100% make if there wash a chance he'd leave Bama.

I suspect they'd assume he'd never leave and not even pick up the phone, then watch as he goes to UL.

He’s said before that he doesn’t mind being at a football school, but I do wonder if long-term he’d rather be someone that basketball is #1. Playing second fiddle to the football team could get old. But maybe not. Bama is willing to spend.

If we don't find a way to get rid of Woodson, that could be IU next year or two... Cignetti is bent on making IU a football school...

I’d love to have Oats at IU. He would kill it here. His style of play is fun to watch.

That done enlightenment!  What did you do, take a drive out west and medicate with peyote?

I do think Woodson will be back next year!

No drive out west but I’m not ruling a short drive up north.

I think he’s back as well. If that’s the case, we should all be hoping for best case scenarios with that in mind. Just bc Ive changed my opinion on forcing him out this season, doesn’t mean I’m happy or content with the results.

we are going to find out really quickly whether Woody and staff are capable of filling needs. I’m very interested to see how IU’s NIL stacks up when there is playing time available at key positions.

But the numbers actually tell the story.  It's a crazy thing those numbers.

Davis 6

Sampson 2

Crean 9

Miller 4

What should a coach's tenure be?

Then IU is out.  In case you haven't noticed -- We are going to be a football school.  :)  :)  :)
