Fire Coach Woodson Thread

This would mean that only Banks, Gunn, and Sparks are entering the portal.

That would be very good news and a potentially upgraded roster, IF we can find some way to replace our best player, Ware.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if Banks, Gunn, and Sparks is the only roster damage.

That's why I said as of now

That's what it's looking like

And that’s really best case scenario. Unfortunate;, but that’s what happens when you’re a bad team with no depth and no high school recruits coming in.

Looks like this is what IU will be looking at as of now.

Cupps, Newton, Reneau, Mgbako, Galloway, Leal, and 6-7 transfers

I would be concerned with Reneau and MgBako wanting to play in the NCAA Tourney.  I could see both leaving if a winning program was to offer similar money.

Let me preface by saying that I'm not off the Fire Woodson wagon..

If IU lands Javon Small and a talented center (or Ware's Return) then IU will be top 25 good next season. Javon Small, the savior of IUBB!

LOL Ware isn't coming back but I get your point. That said it's going to take more than two dudes to turn things around.

It’s only “good news” in the sense that it’s not as bad as it could be. But Mike Woodson screwed up the roster so bad that “good news” is still an absolutely terrible position to be in. Galloway, Reneau, and Mgbako are the only three players left who we should want playing legitimate minutes next season. So we’re relying on a guy who couldn’t fill a guard spot or two last season coming off a good season to somehow find 5 starter/rotation level players in the transfer portal coming off a terrible season.

And so many here that were pro NIL are now showing their colors.

I am pro NIL but anti the chit show that is going on now.

If a dude wants to come to school and cut a deal with Nicks, Buffa Louies, or whomever to endorse their products, then I am all for it.  Do the advertising, print the posters, sign autographs at the door, whatever.  The deal will represent what you are worth to the business.

To just take bags of millionaires' cash, with no corresponding value, that's a bit much for me.

With you on that. Think it's mostly just financial jealousy though

Edit: Also, hard to learn proper budgeting when you're playing with triple digits as a Frosh in college

We had three five star players this year and never sniffed the top 25. No way ware comes back and he is a massive loss. And the biggest issue is Woodson is still the coach.

I can’t imagine donating any sort of dollar amount to this program while it doesn’t even make the NCAA tournament.

My prior company was a long-time corporate sponsor through the Crean/Archie years.  They did a good job of getting us access and creating things for us to bring customers to but customer interest really fell off during that time period.  I was the point person for that and got some cool access but in the end I had to pull the plug.  For the same $ we could sponsor the Colts and even with their up and down performance I had far more customer interest in them than IU.  I would have to think it is even harder now for them to keep sponsors.

The value is up to those millionaires. If they don’t think they’re getting value the $$ will dry up.

Apparently that is not currently the case.

That was the initial plan. But then Texas A&M and other schools in the SEC and OSU started to splash the cash for the best players for pay for play. They do this bc the players talent brings them the value and they need the talent to be competitive. The NCAA tried to crack down and got sued and lost. And are now being sued again by Virginia and Tennessee so the NCAA isn’t investigating any NIL issues moving forward and stopped any investigations they had going. We are in the pay for play being legal for all schools and not just Duke. UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. this actually benefits IU, since they have a strong NIL program for men’s basketball. They just need to get the coaching figured out.

edit: Schools can now help steer athletes to NIL deals. It’s why you see schools hiring GM’s to help with that function.

Good summary. And with the formalization of this all the comments about “pocket watching” will fall flat. As fans of pro sports know it’s a big industry figuring out the puzzle of salary management. What you spend on one player, you forgo for another.

Soon there will be websites, message boards, Twitter feeds dedicated to the portal, roster construction, who’s spending what on whom, etc…

It’s a brand new world out there.

What I have gather by reading this board Leal was getting 100k so 3 Xs that means 300k I guess?  If that is true Leal just needs to chill and be very thankful because he is not worth it.

Leal is a good student and smart kid.  He's in the Kelley program workingtoward a valuable degree.  It was a total no-brainer: work toward a business degree and play the game of basketball while getting paid handsomely.  I saw it as the most practical approach for AL, not some great coaching job to retain a modest bench contributor.
