Fire Coach Woodson Thread

So what you are saying is that we should run a grift to separate Woodson from his money and then use that money to run a shadow campaign to find and fund a new coach by bypassing the current administration? What should we run? Pig-in-a-poke, honeypot, Nigerian prince, pigeon drop, maybe we run a salting scam?

I'd say you're looking at a Boesky, a Jim Brown, a Miss Daisy, two Jethros and a Leon Spinks, not to mention the biggest Ella Fitzgerald ever.

So, here's the weather so far...

Woodson has publicly declared he's not going anywhere.

We can close the door on 2024 recruits with only one G**D*** recruit.  (Credit Walsh)

We have to rely on the portal to carry us through another blind year.

2025 IMO doesn't look good for us either in regards to recruiting.  (IMO I think we lose Sisley to PU, Haralson will probably go elsewhere much bigger than IU).

Is there not a better time to flip the coaching switch?  '24 and '25 has great in-state talent and we are going to miss it big time.

UGH!

Losing Queen hurts regardless of who's on the bench next season.  From my records, we put 35 offers on the table for the '24 class and we have 1 commitment.  We had a huge number of kids take OV's but I think it's @Uspshoosier who's said several times Woody is not effective in the long run recruiting game and if you really dig into it, that's a fact.  Why?  Many would answer it's because he doesn't spend enough time personally on the road and being visible to the targets and their people and I'm inclined to agree with that answer.   His name means nothing to 16-18 year old kids and sadly our IU name isn't exactly a bellwether in the hierarchy of college bball these days.

There will surely be an end of the season meeting with Dolson but it wouldn't surprise me in the least that QB won't also be there which should never happen.  Woody's too arrogant to believe his approach and style needs to change and while he might say the right things, I don't believe anything will truly change except for some lip service.  Face it boys and girls, there is little chance that we won't be stuck with this mess for another season.

I'm usually one of the last ones to say fire a coach because I know what it does to the families of assistants, staff, and players, everyone is affected. It has happened to my wife as a player, it happened to my FIL as an athletic trainer. It's sometimes life-changing things and it's very hard to move on. It's not as easy as just packing up and moving to another town for a new job.

That being said I could tell early on that this wasn't a job for Woody. I love the guy, he's awesome to talk to and hang out with but he is-was already semi-retired and this job needs much more than that. My son will probably play golf with Woody & Buckner as soon as the season is over. Which I love because they are helping a young black IU student feel comfortable at IU. But this job is way over his head. And the longer it goes the worse it's going to be. I also love IU and just want what's best for this school. Sorry for the ramble.

As a minority I would suggest for your son to hang out with a lot of international groups if he can.  Just opens up the world to him.  I made so many Hong Kong friends and I get to see them every 6 months. Room and board already paid weather you like it or not lol.

Well tonight is our best Vegas-odds opportunity to win for the remaining six conference games... and we're a two point underdog.

At home.   To Nebraska.  0-7 on the road, Nebraska.

I am in the acceptance stage.  I will probably still complain on forums like this but I have lost most of my faith in the idea that the stewards of Indiana University have the slightest clue as to what they are doing.  We will keep Woodson, we will have to go to the portal to add 6 or 7 guys (which hasn't worked for the majority of programs who did that for this year), that will lead to the excuse that we have a bunch of new faces in the system "learning" when we lose early at like Battle of Atlantis (or whatever that event is called), and eventually a year from now we will be on the bubble at best and still hearing about humps and how we brought in all these new guys and it takes some time to learn and on and on.

We have been through this enough lately to know A)when a coaching staff is done and B)that IU always waits at least one more year after that is clear so that the impact of that is always most severe (loss of fan goodwill and everything that looks like).  So just buckle up and watch the sh** show play out yet again.

And to be fair to Woodson, he has no clue about recruiting. He was recruited to play college ball over 40 years ago. The rest of his career was in the NBA where there is no recruiting, at least not as is required at the collegiate level. He kept Archie's staff, so he didn't even need to understand what a recruiter was in real terms...

That's in no way meant to excuse his poor showing as a recruiter, but it's just another part of being a college basketball head coach that Woodson does not understand. Low energy and low effort will get you poor results.

Appreciate the post and the thoughts but does this identify you to the staff/AD dept?  Maybe they don’t follow the boards but if they do, I just wanted to make sure they don’t come for a visit and hand you a cardboard box.

Well…..wanted to run some recruiting numbers to gauge how things compare. On the “hit rate” (commits / offers) for top-80 recruits at IU….. Mike Woodson: 5/53 (9.4%); Archie Miller: 5/55 (9.0%)

Son of a ##*%$, that's gonna leave a mark.

I think we're good. I'm pretty sure most people in that department think the same thing. Appreciate your concern.

This is how it seems to go for every IU coach. They start, there’s hype around the program which leads to landing some good recruits, we suck, and recruiting dries up. It happened with Crean (he survived the longest), it happened with Archie, and it has happened with Mike Woodson.
