This is the advantage of Woodson being well connected to the NBA. Hopefully NBA scouts will be fair and honest with him and he hopefully has good people around to confirm or deny that information. Personally I think he should come back. Someone made the argument that you go in early to play for the second contract. That's true but you also need playing minutes so that people can give you that contract. Playing minutes is hard to come by for players even chosen from pick 16 to the end of the first round. If he goes to a final four and dominates then yeah he's probably going to be a top 10 pick and should leave but if he's inconsistent he should stay so he has a better chance to be in that draft range so he can get more playing time. What is the difference between the 10th and 11th pick? Quote

It depends on the draft year but honestly there's also a little bit of politics when it comes to playing a top ten pick because a front office doesn't want to look like fools at first so they typically play. I just don’t want JHS to be in a situation and be drafted by a team like my Knicks in the later rounds. Obi Toppin (8th pick taken) deserves more playing time and deserved more development time. But we have Tom Tibadeu (sp) as our coach and only plays established players. There are a lot of Coaches in the NBA that only care about winning now (to preserve their contracts)and really don't want to develop players. When you're a top 5-10 ( guaranteed top 5 at least) you typically forced by management to play the kid. But even at 8 Obi Toppin will have to play somewhere else to get a good contract. But it’s also important to note that the NBA isn’t about the first contract it’s about putting yourself in a great position to contribute enough to warrant a second legit contract. That’s what Cody did and it worked for him. Maybe he could have snagged two more contracts after his rookie deal leaving after 1 year. But maybe not maybe his PER his rookie year is single digits deemed too much of a project and gets forgotten about So this begs the question. Do you go to the NBA to “develop” or should you already be developed? With a four year rookie contract you don’t have much time. So if you’re not ready to go in and make an immediate impact, maybe you want to wait? Quote

Him being a one and done is very, very good for IU IMO. Liam McNeeley will take note. Liam is 6'6", skilled, not physically dominant, and playing the point very effectively for Montverde. In other words, while every player is different, it's incredibly easy for him to see the direct comp between him and JHS. And I would hope that JHS is reporting back to Montverde that he made an excellent decision in choosing IUBB. This is great stuff. We get a shot at a national championship because JHS is one of our key guys, the talented culture guys like Trey Galloway carry the program torch from year to year, and other top 25 players see that we are a path to being an NBA first round pick. Perfect. I am sorry but I don't see a great player leaving as being great for the program. I rather have the talent in hand over what talent we might get. I see what Stu is saying but tend to agree with you. having JHS as a one and done “CAN” help the staff recruit other one and done type talents so “IF” it plays out that way over and over and we get a JHS level player every year it is a good thing. However, that has yet to be seen and as is currently a big “IF” so until we backfill him with another like talent, it’s a negative for IU ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote

I believe it's dependent on the individual and their situation. There are players that need the NBA for whatever reason (money, focus on development over school, coaches, etc.) while others might be able to delay it for a year or they enjoy their current situation. How many rookies actually make an immediate impact? Defining immediate impact as being a rotation player or better. Quote

We need to continue to get multiyear PGs that will develop or more experienced PGs through the portal. When a talent like JHS comes along you obviously take him but don't believe relying on a frosh PG every season is a winning formula. It would be interesting to see how this season had played out without XJ being injured. Does JHS continue to facilitate and take over when needed? Does he play and score more off ball with XJ running the show? ALASKA HOOSIER and Hardwood83 2 Quote
Hardwood83 Posted February 27, 2023 Posted February 27, 2023 JHS is a NBA talent and I would suspect he's leaving. But it is interesting that seems to be recency bias from torching Purdue who is not that big or athletic at guard, while the NBA competition will be both of those things. I expect JHS to do what is best for himself, but I am an IU fan first and foremost, so hope he returns. There is some nice buzz created by having a one & done, of course, but that doesn't always translate to anything tangible. ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
