CJ Gunn is a player.

Bates and Reneau need to learn to play with real intensity consistently.

Logan Duncomb has some innate ability and plays hard, but he runs out of gas physically

Woodson has been saying Logan has been struggling with an illness which put him out of shape.  Say's he's got to get him in better shape.

GO HOOSIERS!

FWIW, Kennesaw State is definitely better than Elon.  They are 7-4 (although three of those are against lower division teams) with three of their losses being at Florida (88-78), at VCU (64-61), and at San Diego State (88-54).  Only the game against the Aztecs wasn't competitive.  They like to shoot the three -- 40+% of their shots have been from deep -- hit them at a decent clip (38%).  They are pretty poor inside the lane, though, and they won't start anyone over 6'8".

1.  In limited time this year, Banks is shooting 67% and has 33 points in 59 minutes.  Gunn is shooting 37% and is just 2 of 15 from three.

2.  Banks is more physically ready than Gunn is.

3.  An aspect that often gets overlooked is the ability of a player to draw fouls.  Banks plays to contact and gets to the line....a lot.  Shot 184 free throws his senior season.  And in just 59 minutes of play this year, he has shot more free throws than anyone on this team except TJD and X.

#3 is a great point. If that continues as he plays into more minutes next season…

In Reneau's defense, the shoving the guy with the off arm move worked really, really well for Ballo from Arizona.

In all seriousness, I think the quick whistles he's been getting have gotten into his head. He seems to rush everything now instead of being patient, kind of like he knows he will be benched with foul trouble quickly and needs do everything in a hurry before the fouls are called.

Not impressed. Basketball IQ is awful. Plain awful. Hustle isn’t consistent. Some nice offensive plays. Team and individual defense was just plain bad. We are way too athletic to play D the way we do. Too nonchalant on O and on D, and with the ball.

Reneau forgot he has great footwork and just tries to shove guys with his off-arm.

Fun game from an entertainment standpoint. Not so great from the WayneFleek Eye Test.

It’s tough to really stay locked in against teams like this. As I’ve been complaining about all year, these games are worthless. The playing time for the bench is worthless. It’s not” development.”  In fact, if you have bad habits they’re often exacerbated in games like this. At least in a scrimmage the coach can stop the game and instruct.

Even if they played hard, what’s that show you? they can beat Elon by 40 instead of 25? That means nothing when you play against a Purdue. Even Kenpom knows his system overrates big margins against bad teams which is why he played around with score caps forever…but I digress.

Kennesaw St is considerably better. They shouldn’t challenge us too much at home, but they’ll do a better job of exploiting the dumb stuff we do.

Part of it is him being a freshman and adjusting to the feel of the game instead of thinking through it. You could see that charge he picked up coming about 2 sec before it happened. He had already planned on what to do and the defender knew it.

He’s going to be really good someday.

Look at the schedule this week and everybody is playing these kind of games. You can't play 11 non conference games against top 50 teams.

Both, in basketball and football all teams schedule cupcakes because they taste good.

unless there is an upset it doesn’t measure anything other than maybe who has been paying attention.  Rather it does provide a good workout and stretch (unless an injury occurs) like going to LA Fitness for exercise.  When comments like they did this or that better, for the most part it was good to see….let the same outcomes or play be against KY, PU, Mich St, Kansas, Arizona, or a number of other teams…then we will talk.   However, a win is better than an upset stomach.

Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens. Brad Stevens. That's all I could pull from that mess of a post littered with speculations and spelling errors my 3rd grade niece doesn't dare make. So quickly we all forget the TEAM Crean built that turned us around. Were you under a rock between 2008 and 2011? Did you jump on board and buy a "We're back" shirt?

doing five thugs at once an listening to people like u u talk about how crean turned this program around gets old we what has crean done in 6 years but win one big ten title. An not to say was probably one of the best teams iu ever had has to me was a bigger let down than us not making the tourney this year. What has crean done indiana basketball doesn't care about sweet sixteens we r about banners an competing for at the top along side the best. We r far from tht. Crean is probably one of the worst coaches with x's an o's in the big ten an has no idea when it comes to the bench an subs. An no I'm a cutter grew up in btown an yah I can't spell oh well an not saying much if ur niece can spell better than me. But I have been around here along time have a state ring with Bloomington north in 99' an have coached middle school bob for 12 years an have been part of indiana elite program for awhile an I knw many of these kids on the team an around the state. Ur probably just one of these kids tht came into town went to school an think u really knw what iu basketball really is. But us here born an raised bleed basketball an iu basketball. Crean has not done anything in his career but one final four in what 20 years coaching. 2 sweet sixteens here an a big ten champ thts not IU standards bud

A few thoughts

If the freshman at Purdue can play at this level, then Gunn can play. He needs more minutes IMO. Is he going to make mistakes? Yes but let him play through them. He is a natural scorer and he's not afraid.

Bus left the hotel at 9am for the Kansas game and Geronimo showed up at 9:06 while everyone else was waiting on him, then rumor is he complained about playing time. That didn't go over well with staff. Duncomb is another one who wants more time. We'll see how things go the rest of the season but they could be portal guys.

This team is soft and that is not going to change. We get outmatched in games and players still complain about practices being too tough.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Go Hoosiers

Have to start recruiting more tough minded players who is willing to work for playing time. It seems like it has been awhile since we have had players who were just played with a toughness and grit.

In my opinion there are three guards/wings that truly get into their man on the defensive end and force turnovers:

  1. Xavier Johnson
  2. Trey Galloway, and
  3. CJ Gunn

Moreover, while Gunn is shooting a low percentage currently, that quick release + form is a jumper is destined to go in a lot.

Defensive intensity, length, distance shooter,  can finish at the rim, and low turnovers - especially for a freshman. And to me he does the one thing that Woody repeatedly says makes it all possible; he plays damn hard and does so consistently.

For me? Bates is a far better player than he was last year, but he doesn't get to the rim and his defensive recognition and intensity really sucks.

Play CJ Gunn.

IU’s NET Sos is 45 with a non con SOS of 55.   That’s with the 300 + cupcakes on the schedule.    As long as programs can maintain those kind of numbers while playing 300+ teams  nothing is going to change regarding scheduling those games.     Also the better  teams you schedule in your buy games means the administration has to pay more for the quality opponents.   This has been a problem in the past.   A lot more to it then IU needs to schedule less cupcakes.

With the rest of the season being conference games our SOS is only going to go up correct? Should finish in the top 20?

I'll definitely give Gunn credit for having active hands.  Crean would have loved his defense.  Also, impressive, he mostly does all this without fouling.  As far as staying in front of his guy.  He's not as good but having defenders that are active and aggressive make the offense struggle to find a calm.  We need more defenders that don't just give the offense what they want.  Gunn is maybe the best on the roster of having active hands.  That with the length would be a big asset.

The defense of the team as a whole has been disappointing as of late.  I'm not sure I can explain it with the type of athletes we have.

Duncomb is someone I thought could develop and contribute as a JR/SR, so hopefully he sticks around but I get wanting minutes.  If Geronimo showed up late then complained about minutes, not a good look, as I've said I think he's getting the minutes he's earned.

I think Geronimo does deserve more minutes.  I'm in that crowd for sure.  Where he gets them is the problem.  TJD is going to play a lot.  Race is going to play a lot.  Reneau maybe should be playing more.  Kopp is going to play a lot.  Galloway is the guy I think could have a cut in minutes but he's a positional need, especially now that X has gone down.   It's unfortunate because i think he is better than what we are getting out of him.  This isn't surprising to me in the sense we have some unhappy guys with PT.   All these guys feel like they deserve minutes.  Some of them actually do.  Not easy.
