BTT Game Thread: Indiana vs. Iowa 3/12 - 1 pm on CBS

Not going to go through the entire thread, so SIAP, but on the bright side, I like where IU is projected at the moment, #11 seed vs LSU. That would be a very winnable game and then no greater than a #3 seed(Texas Tech) in the way of a trip to the Sweet 16. Another win or 2 and IU was looking at a 8 or 9 seed and a second round game against a killer.

LSU could be in chaos w Wade getting fired, or they could be amped from it. Hoping for chaos

Again, respectfully, because I enjoy the banter and an alternative point of few to consider - but I don’t believe it really is debatable that our starting five is not our best lineup.

To your point, Woody does see them every day in practice - but some of us on the board see those practices or have access to those who do as well. Woody has a lot of great qualities and is a great leader of young men and coach, but it’s also well documented that he’s stubborn and still green on coaching in college.

Miller and Parker have shown what they are and are not at this point. They struggle to defend due to lack of footspeed and basketball IQ. They are spot-up shooters that lack confidence unless they hit their first couple shots of the game. Neither can create their own shot consistently.

I think some of the frustration from many of us isn’t based on the proven production of Bates/Galloway/Geronimo/Phinisee  as replacements for the MK/PS minutes (although to some extent it actually is) - but the unknowns of what they could potentially have given us with those minutes. Maybe Tamar isn’t quite ready for the moment yet and would struggle to find his shot. Maybe Geronimo still needs to get more consistent with his shot. Maybe Gallo still struggles to play under control. None of them got the 25-30 mins a game that MK/PS had to fully show us who they are. But they all have a higher work rate/skill set on D, and it’s unlikely they’d perform worse than 3-16 FG (today) or 4-13 FG (yesterday) that we got from Miller and Parker - so what’s the downside of giving them the chance?

I’m pro Woody. I like what we’ve done this year. I’m proud of the team and enjoyed how they closed out the season. That doesn’t mean I can’t wish for more for them. I don’t think I’m alone in believing that the dedication to our “senior shooters” cost us in terms of reaching our fullest potential, and more certainly came at a cost of developing young guys with higher ceilings who project to be a bigger part of rebuilding this program over the next 2-3 years.

Overall, I’m thrilled with the play recently and excited to see it carry over to the tourney. We should all be proud. Go Hoosiers next week I’m the dance (men AND women!)

Statistically, our best 5 in terms of player's individual numbers for when they are on the bench compared to when they are off are X, Race, TJD, JG, and Trey.....but I'm not really those five individually when put together would work well.  With JG being injured, our best five statiscally has been X, Race, TJD, Trey, and Kopp.  Phin is sixth in terms of the +/- in that group.  After that, there is a big drop and then you have Bates and Stewart.

I have been a supporter of decreasing Stewart's minutes.  That said, I'd prefer that they would have been going to Phin/Galloway/JG when he was healthy than to Bates.  If we didn't have a shot at making the tournament, I'd be giving Bates consierably more run......but we obviously did.

Isnt Stewart our second worst + - yet plays the second most minutes?

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I no doubt will be sort of rooting for Purdue or against Iowa let’s put it that way.
I don't want PU to experience any success out of this team that was so highly regarded at the beginning of the season....I hope MSU beats them today and we go farther in the NCAA tournament than they do.

I’ll say this in Kopp and Stewarts defense. They really tried hard and at the end of the day, I’m not going to get upset. All I ever care about is effort.

I know I give Kopp grief on here for missing open shots, but he does give effort and doesn’t coast. He even hit 2 big 3’s in the game. We just needed one or two more from him or Stewart.

One thing I will give Kopp credit for is that he has a short memory. He can miss 5 in a row and won’t hesitate to shoot another shot to find his rhythm. Maybe he will get hot during one of the tournament games

If Race Trayce and XJ stays and Iu upgrades 1-2 more shooters…. IU is a top 15 team next year. Imagine if you bring in a pack with XJ and Trayce.
Except this scenario is highly unlikely

Kopp does give e and e most of the time. The issue is he gives up buckets from his defense. Right after finally knocking down a 3 he immediately gave up an and 1. He has over helped the entire season and isn't able to recover to his man. When he is over helping he's not stopping ball most of the time just reaching towards the driver. It's baffling that both P Stew, Kopp, and others consistently do this and it cost us. Why hasn't this been fixed?! Especially against a team like Iowa, they're not going to beat us driving and making tough twos. They're going to beat us when we leave them WIDE OPEN over and over and over again.

GREAT GAME!

Love our team

Easy to stomach a loss when the team plays hard and it’s a close one against a worthy opponent. Felt that way about last Saturday, too.

Can’t wait to see these dudes locked in next week.
