General Coach Candidate News

Would you be surprised to know he once said in a nationally televised interview that "if rape is inevitable just lay back and enjoy it" to the female interviewer?

Bob Knight did not care what you or I or Connie Chung thought about him or what he said or did.

That does not excuse his boorish behavior and how that disparages women and the law and demeans the Indiana University by association.

He was a great coach.  And Indiana University Athletic Department let him get out of the lane on those occasions.   Some would say that it is acceptable if he wins big.  Others not so much.

Indiana University is a public institution of higher education.  The general funds relies significantly on the public through taxes and donations.  It is driven by many factors and one of them is politicians that are impacted by the media and public perception.

If a representative of this public institution cannot control themselves, they may be jeopardizing more than just one job.

Here is now reflecting on Beard and Sampson and the older Pitino and Woody Hayes and many more.  Some say yes.  Hire them.  But who the hell can control them when they repeatedly and publicly embarrass the institution.  It means a lot of more subtle things too.  It may imply that the institution is not a great place to teach or learn.  It becomes a lightening rod for public officials and groups that use that instance for power or money.

Connie Chung set Bob Knight up.  And RMK could give a big $4i+ and did it anyway.  He knew what she would do.  It was not smart for him to do and galvanized those that would use that to destroy Indiana basketball as a brand.

Who won that war?   I blame RMK and IU.  Those that don't think that it matters if a coach does stupid stuff are not appreciating institutions of the public trust.

High level success at a place like Auburn. Sec has done of great job of pumping money into basketball so that’s helped however is results at Auburn are crazy when you look at them.   Auburn didn’t have much history before he arrived and since he has been there he has 5 seasons soon to be 6 where they have won 25 or mores games.  4 seasons soon to 5 where he has had single digits losses in a season.   Been to a final 4 and earned multiple protected seeds in the tourney (however did lose to Yale last year as a 2 seed) Danny Wolf turned out to be a pretty good player for Yale.  This year has a team that is easily the number 1 overall seed with 4 weeks to go.   Plus he beat the living dog crap out of Purdue this year

if he can get these results at Auburn what kind of results could he get at a blue blood type of school

Auburn had some similar results in the 80s and 90s. He’s got them rolling now and that’s a testament to his coaching ability, but his last 3 tourney exits were in the rounds of 64, 32, and 32.

He’ll be 65 next year which would give him a pretty small window to do a bunch of things he’s never done before. I don’t really see what makes him a homerun over some of the other coaches discussed. High floor/low ceiling candidate to me.

no

the answer is Brad.

Always has been, always will be.

oh goodness I see we are still of the highest belief that Brad says yes.  Are we more confident in us getting Brad?  Or were we more confident in getting Billy Donovan back in the day?

you choose to believe what you want. until Brad Stevens publicly says no (or until Peegs drops him from #1 on his hot board) I will believe the Brad to IU dream is still alive.

I am firmly confident in saying that IUs next HC will either be Brad Stevens or Dusty May.

Rabby said on the radio today that if he was choosing between Pearl, May, and Beard or the field that he was taking the field fyi

He added that he took the field because he thinks both Pearl & Beard are non-starters and that the math dictates that he take the field.

In his podcast with the Hysteric brothers, they asked if he'd take May/Stevens/Mick or the field and he chose May/Stevens/Mick...

Do what you want with that info

All it does is show that he's a ***** who can't deal with his players face to face, and I don't GAF what Knight did, would did, thought about doing, etc. His style wouldn't work today, didn't work near the end of his career. I'd never, ever set Knight as an example to my kids of how to act or motivate.

I don't care man. I wouldn't expect someone who has never played an organized sport in their life to understand either.

Knight is one of the best motivators of all-time and there is a hundred different people who will all relay that sentiment.

Nice guess and insulting. Gaslighting really doesn't work on me. Played, coached, directed- pretty much anything having to do with soccer, basketball, football, wrestling, and swimming. Want to try again since you know me so well?
