No. His team is ranked #!. They are on pace to probably win the best conference in CBB and be a #1 seed. He was in a FF last year. IU offers nothing that he can't achieve where he is.

His new contract will now run through the 2029-30 season.

Oats will be paid $5 million the first year of his new deal, athletics director Greg Byrne told the committee, with annual increases to $7.55 million the last year. Oats' previous deal was set to pay him $4.7 million in 2024-25 to $5.5 million in 2028-29. Oats' new salary places him within the top seven coaches in USA Today's database of publicly-available contracts.

Oats' buyout under his new deal will be $18 million for the first two years until March 2026, which Byrne said is the highest of any coach in the country based on his research. The buyout then drops to $10 million until March 2027, when it drops to $4 million until March 2028.

Ya Oats isn't leaving unless you pay the buyout and offer him $10 million or more per year.  Even then Alabama probably restructures his contract to match.

I wonder if Few is mentioned because he wants to put the heat on Gonzaga to increase their NIL or his contract. I think there will be a lot of movement on coaches using IU to possibly increase their own pay.

I also remember Cronin saying that the IU job was a dumpster fire, I can't see 4 more years of Woodson changing that outlook for him. Not sure why he is in discussions

I’m good with all of those guys. I think McCollum would be in a 3rd tier probably. We will have to really be dumpster diving for a while before finding a candidate I think would do worse than our current coach lol

We could find most high school coaches who would be better bench coaches than our current bench coach, so...

You may have seen some Drake games this year, but have you watched any of his 4 national championship teams play?  They did not play that way.  He adopted that style this season to win games with the roster he had.  A coach that adapts.....hmm.

Save this post and use it against me in the future if you can.

If we DON'T get Stevens, then 5 years from now, McCollum will be universally viewed as a better coach than whoever we end up hiring.

I watch very few games that don't include IU so I can't assess most of the coaches being discussed as far as how their teams play.  However all things considered I do include style of play in importance (along with age, and history of winning against Q1 type teams).  IMO, the ability to adapt how your team plays, along with how the conference plays/is officiated, would be a major plus in my book.

Honestly most of the hate probably comes from his height.  After the Archie era I don’t think most fans want another coach who needs a stool at every press conference.  That said, I would take him if Brad says no and Beard isn’t an option.

I can agree that part of me wants a cooler looking/acting coach after Crean, Archie and Woody (who is cooler but like a grandpa).  Find me the cool guy who will regularly compete for a championship.  How hard can that be lol

I mean, I absolutely hate how Hurley conducts himself on the sidelines, but give me 2 consecutive championships and I think I'd be apt to overlook it. LOL

I've seen that Mick Cronin has a large buyout but not the numbers in discussions here though I may have missed it. His buyout is $16M until April 1. At that time, it drops again (don't know how much). This is the same if he leaves or gets fired.

I don't see IU spending that kind of money for Cronin.

first choice is the cool guy who wins.  I could go with a 2nd choice being a goober who wins back to back.  I do not want a goober who does not compete for championships.  I mean, this seems kind of easy right

Of course. Pearl's camp did it to IU last year, Beard's camp is doing it right now, just as Dusty's camp will likely be doing the same.

Don't disagree a bit. It is bound to happen, and if I was a coach I would welcome the questions since I knew it would net me more money at the end like it probably will for dusty

I'm not as against Cronin as some but I don't think that he would consider the job, especially if he is against the high pressure job

Love ya man, but that's not really accurate. McCollum is a phenomenal coach and possibly one of the most creative minds in CBB today. Their offense is incredibly efficient, but they play at a very slow pace. He can definitely win that way, but everyone needs to understand what he brings.

He's playing the same style he brought from NW MO. This is an article from 2019.

If you’re looking to copy what Northwest does, this next sentence may scare you a little bit: they’re one of the slower teams out there. I calculated Northwest at just 64.9 possessions per game this season and was surprised to see it that high; their final three games of the season went for 57, 62, and 54 possessions. By no means are they threatening to turn into Whitman anytime soon. And yet: slow, patient basketball clearly works:

Cronin followed legend Bob Huggins at Cincinnati and has coached well at UCLA for the last 5 seasons. He's used to being at jobs with expectations. The one deterrent with Cronin is his buyout.

Scott doesn’t announce Woodson retirement when he did without being confident that he has his guy

Why?  In my opinion, Dolson announced it before our home game against Michigan because he didn't want the program to look bad in front of a national audience.  Mike Davis announced he was leaving prior to season ending too, before Sampson was hired.  I don't think the day/time of the retirement suggests he "had his guy" at all.

@Chris007 Do we know when they would officially sit down with Brad? All-Star weekend is sort of a natural time but they probably won't be done playing in the buyout market by then.

If I had to guess I would say sometime in the beginning of March
