A little surprised no chatter about Collins leaving NW.

I think it’s assumed he’s getting an extension, and the NW fans I know credit new assistant Chris Lowery (B1G asst COY) for turning around the defense.

Dusted off an old thread and slightly changed the thread title.  Lots of unrest - all warranted IMO - and posters commenting on should Woody be replaced and, if so, by who (or is it whom?)  Yesterday on another freeze your a$$ day in Indiana, I put together this list.  Purely informational.  I'm not endorsing anyone.  And yes, I'm sure I missed a name or two that should be included.

Painter and Hurley gonna be on top for next 10 years imo.

Dusty May will be the Candidate Indiana wants to get.   He would be an easy one to root for.  That’s for sure.  Our recruting would change. Doubt we get a seat at the table with the top guys but maybe I’m wrong.

I’d like our next guy to be a great talent evaluator. And work out the transfer portal like a ninja.

Beard only being 50 would be a great get. Guy just wins. Indiana won’t consider him.

IMO May is the only Candidate Indiana is considering but I’ll have a wait and see approach.   But I’m ready to move on from Woodson’s style of play.

Love the guy, haven’t loved the product.

If and when IU makes the move, they need to go for the youngest proven coach as possible and bases on your list, it should be Lewis, May, Beard and Chaney making the final cut and the two most proven are May and Beard.  But I would go with the most proven despite his off court issues and that is Beard, IMO

I personally don’t care about having a seat at the table with the top recruits, I think the coach should recruit players that fit his style of play and are high character players

I agree and that is why I want a natural talent evaluator.  It’s nice to have a chance at some of the best guys but numerous schools show year in and year out talent comes in on shapes and sizes and star levels.

I think winning at the power 5 is tough had guys don’t realize what it takes. That’s why the Dusty May prospect concerns me. It’s a rude awakening for most coaches.  Figuring it out on the job isn’t the way it’s going to work at Indiana. Ideally we finally get a proven guy that can do it at that level.

I've thought quite a bit about this over the years and I believe the solution to be both simple (in concept) and difficult (to actually achieve). Here's a list criteria for a great head coaching hire (my opinion). I think we got a guy like this when we hired Knight. Since then...not so much. I think that the closer a program comes to hiring someone who meets criteria like this, the better they will be. The further you stray from it, the worse you will be. In that sense, the solution is simple...hire someone who comes as close to it as possible.

1. Proven commitment to and execution of a ‘winning basketball philosophy’:
  a. Stresses/requires sound fundamentals
     i. Shooting, passing, blocking out, ball handling, shot selection, etc.
  b. Prioritizes recruiting players with sound fundamentals
  c. Prioritizes both offensive and defensive excellence (being good on both ends)
  d. Prioritizes recruiting players that fit and play within this system
  e. Stresses/requires minimizing mistakes, taking good shots, valuing each possession, playing hard, playing smart, etc.
2. Demonstrated ability to recruit players and build a balanced and effective roster
3. Demonstrated ability/willingness to make as-needed adjustments to talent/roster
4. Demonstrated ability to implement the system while keeping it attractive to modern players
5. Demonstrated ‘game management’ abilities: in-game coaching adjustments, timeouts, substitutions, foul management, matchups, etc.
6. Demonstrated ability/willingness to make adjustments to talent/roster strengths/abilities
7. Proven ability to develop players and measurable improvement of players (players get better)
8. Demonstrated ability to maximize player skills and production (gets the most out of the team)
9. Demonstrated ability to translate winning philosophy to on court results (the system is effective and produces wins)
  a. Win/Loss records
  b. Conference standings
  c. Tournament success
10. Demonstrated ability to achieve and sustain success across seasons, rosters, etc. (wins consistently without dramatic ups and downs) (Harder to evaluate with younger coaches or coaches from smaller schools?)
11. Possesses additional necessary D1 head coaching acumen: personable, personality, etc.
12. Does not possess disqualifying traits or issues that negate the above

Dusty gets a lot of mention so I thought I would tag his Bart Torvik page. Gives a good sense of not just the overall team record, but the advanced analytics behind his teams.

*FAU had 1 winning season from 2008-2018 before Dusty arrived.

The more I read about Josh Schertz, the Indiana State coach, the more he moves to the top of my list.

His record has been awfully impressive. Young, and a good evaluator of talent by finding guys who fit his system.

Potential getting an at large bid at ISU is impressive.
