As others have said I'd say this bodes well for the current basketball situation. 1) if $ was so tight like it was thought to be I doubt you give TA a raise at this time 2) it shows that we have an AD that'll pay good money for results. I agree with Treesh that if we're paying $5.5M+ it better be for a top end coach.

I think it means there is and will always be money for IU athletics, and Dolson isn’t ******* around!  That’s how I see it and love it!
You put what I said more elegantly lol

If you find a great football coach that wants to stay, you take out a loan to pay his salary.  The money you get back (only from UNC experience) is ridiculous.

So we divide Allen's new salary by the standard number of games played then multiply that number times the number of games in a standard basketball season and whoa Nellie even Brad Stevens can't turn that down.   lol

That's probably better than dividing it by the number of players he has to manage.

The Allen pay raise is certainly good optics for any prospective coaches.... Sure IU is a fishbowl, but here's the bar on what kind of money you'll be making. Indiana is a basketball school and the football coach is making 5 mill a year.

Hard to believe many would pass that up.

He just has to seek employment. He can interview for jobs but that doesn't mean he has to take a job. But I can't imagine Archie not wanting to coach again soon. I think the Boston College job would be a good one for him.

Do you know where we could find the contract itself? I would be surprised if the mitigation clause allowed him to turn down any/all job offers that he would get. If all he has to do is interview then the clause is completely pointless.

Contract is in the article.

True but how many jobs can you turn down after being fired before the offers stop coming? Imagine being told you're not good enough and yet still being picky about your opportunities.

Tom Allen's contract simply speaks to the job he's done and how many schools must have been asking about him - football schools that have money. Well deserved and IU just told him we want you here for a long time. Great decision. Doesn't mean we care more about football. Dolson isn't an idiot....at least not yet.

This also puts to rest the "2020 revenue will affect buying Archie out or spending big money to get a big name". If Dolson wants to spend some $$, it'll be there one way or another. Contracts can be built in crazy ways, fellas.

I haven't seen the contract. But usually mitigation clauses use language like "make reasonable effort to find comparable employment." If Archie makes reasonable efforts to land a coaching job, i.e., makes inquiries, interviews, and doesn't turn down legitimate job offers, he will have satisfied the terms of the contract whether he gets a job or not. Obviously, he can't sit on his @$$ indefinitely. But he doesn't have to accept a job that isn't comparable, i.e., he wouldn't have to accept a job at FWIPU. But he probably can't pass up a job like Penn State if offered.

So I looked at the contract and it states . . .

The Employee is required to mitigate University's obligations under Section 6.02.G by making reasonable and diligent efforts (under the circumstances and opportunities then prevailing) to obtain a comparable employment position as soon as practicable following  such termination. Comparable employment position shall include, but not be limited to, employment (1) as a head coach or assistant  coach in the professional or collegiate ranks, (2) in any athletics-related media position, (3) in a professional or administrative position with an athletics-related governing body, or (4) in another similar athletics-related position.

I highly doubt it'll be an issue, both because Archie doesn't seem like the type of guy who just wants to sit around doing nothing and because I don't think he wants to risk violating the contract and losing $10 million.

I would imagine this is a negotiating point if you separate, too. E.g. “I’ll settle for $5M if you waive the offset/mitigation clause.”
