General Coach Candidate News

Just looked..of the top 25 paid college college basketball coaches only 11 schools pay their basketball coach more than their football coach. Kentucky and Duke are outliers. Average salary wise, others pay their basketball coach either $500,000 to $1.5 million. I'm guessing Indiana could get someone around $5.5-6.5 million a year. Would be #3 behind Kentucky and Duke. @Chris007 Is this realistic thinking?

I know this table is slightly out of date, but no way Chris Beard would leave Texas Tech with his current situation.

Who do you think will be the first reporter to know that we have parted ways with Archie? Will be a local guy? Osterman, Rabby or a national guy like Goodman?

Trying to parse how much I should read into the subtext here.

I’ll guess Rothstein?

This is what I based it off of too..I would agree. Surprised that Mack's agent reached out to IU. L'Ville must be getting hit hard. Stunned Tony Bennett is #18.

FWIW...Stevens annually makes 3.6 mil a year for Boston.

I think Stevens' amount might be from when Boston first hired him. They signed him to an extension in 2020 but didn't release the terms.

Most definitely on Bennett. Kinda shocked how much UNC pays Roy out of pocket. Rest must be coming from Jordan money.

That was on his initial contract extension. He's making more than that now or we all assume because the Celtics didn't release the terms of most recent extension. If I had to guess I'd say he's close to $5M now.

Feel like Goodman made the Crean news? I don’t know but feel like the Archie termination announcement gets national sourcing.

Good point.. I will edit it. I still wonder if 6 mil would make him think about leaving.

I'm just guessing... I think there will be a quick announcement. Could be early as Friday afternoon. I get the vibe IU doesn't want to wait around. The talking heads on ESPN will be all over it. I can see it now, Greenburg and Bilas arguing that Indiana should've gave Archie another year and it's a "bad look" to fire a coach in a pandemic.

Bennett turned down a pay raise and instead had UVA put that $ back into the basketball program and he got a crazy buyout which secured his spot for the foreseeable future. So while his salary is lower they are definitely valuing him big time through other means.

Zach for sure. He’s connected.

If not, Woj. Agents talks.

Believe it or not, Bennett was offered an extension and raise after he won the natty. He basically said, "I'll take the extra year, but I don't need the raise. I make enough money." ... Then he pledged $500K to a career development program for current and former players.

At the time, he said, "If there are ways that this can help out the athletic department, the other programs and coaches, by not tying up so much (in men’s basketball), that’s my desire.”

Kinda keep waiting for something to happen to prove this guy isn't for real. Well, other than that horrible trait of averaging 65 points or so a game instead of 85 -- while winning nearly 75 percent of your games, winning league titles and an NCAA title -- in Charlottesville.

Money will not make him think of leaving.  Moreover, with his wife as his agent he makes a bottom line of 15% more because he doesn't pay agent fees.

The only thing that will make him consider leaving is lifestyle/profession choice. So good luck with that.

I didn't suggest he'd leave. I 100% agree if he is to leave it's because he and his wife are choosing to do so for reasons other than $. I give Stevens to IU the same likelihood that I have as a 38 year old out of shape guy still making it to the NBA.

Yeah the family dynamic here can't be ignored for these younger coaches.  Kids in school.  They are going to be looking for as much stability as they can get.  It's not entirely relevant but it sucks for Archie, Morgan, and Leah that they are moving from their community of the last 4 years.  For Brad, it would help that it's somewhat of a homecoming for him and his family, and we don't know how they, as parents, feel about their kids in Boston.

Agree that an additional $1 million annually to Brad means so much less than future stability, in job security and otherwise.

Have I mentioned Brad handled rushing me when I was was a wee freshman at DePauw?  He was an ATO.  He failed to make a successful pitch, so I feel like that's a pretty serious knock against him.  I think we can do better.

I was hoping you or Hoosierpap would be breaking the news!

I'm getting tired. I need some of your other guys to bring something to the table. :-) Would love to hear who @hoosierpap thinks might be candidates.

I hope it's realistic but honestly don't know. If football is going to be good for a while then I think we should be able to afford it.
