For me it's about his resume. He has rings, wins, and doesn't have any down years.  It's way more impressive than Archie and believe it or not, Coach Cig as well.
His point guard production from his system reminds me of the three titles Knight won. It's still a point guard game in college.  Has been for decades. Wherever he ends up, point guards will consider playing for him.
I was at the UE v Drake this year and his team had an off night but they were still the most cerebral team on the court.  Each player knew their role.  They didn't take dumb shots and played as a team.  I haven't seen team basketball out of Bloomington in a long long time. 
The next IUBB won't need years to get a winning product on the court because a coach can build his team through transfers on year one.
Having said all of this, I still think IU is a job coveted among the coaching circles. The resources alone is extremely attractive for a coach.  So I don't think he will get hired here. But I do think he'll be a successful coach wherever he ends up. He's already successfully proving he can quickly transition into D1 by recoding the most wins in the entire country. 

Archie had a great resume also. Just way top risky imo.

That’s not proof of anything. Kansas, UK, and UNC all have histories in the modern era of hiring P5 coaches away. So does IU. Duke and UNCs last hires were coach in waiting situations due to a legendary coach retiring. They never went to the open market so it tells us nothing.  
 

If UNC or Texas is open in the next couple years they will go big game hunting and one or both will have a good chance at landing someone from a major conference. And if they don’t they’ll go the midmajor route like everyone else who strikes out on their top 1 or 2 candidates.  
 

IU’s successes and failures (mostly failures) are its own doing. There’s no mysterious force keeping good coaches away.

But here’s the thing, for all the talk about how rough IU is on coaches, we probably gave Mike Davis, Tom Crean, Archie Miller, and Mike Woodson twice as long as UK and other elite programs would have. We let guys have at least 4 years, and the expectations aren’t crazy—just get us to the sweet 16 or competitive for conference title 60% of the time, and don’t miss the NCAA multiple years in a row. You actually have to fail pretty spectacularly to get ousted here by just not being competitive.

You must have missed a lot of people talking about pace of play, whether he can continue at a higher level. A lot of questions were posed today, as they have been for a while, and he remains a mystery but a possibility

Yes they will try to go big game hunting but more than likely won't get the big game. How has KU shown they hire big time coaches lately since they haven't hired a new coach for over 20 years. They hired Roy Williams who had no HC experience. If you look at the all time great coaches very few went from one elite job to another. Most of them started at a mid major then got their major job and stayed at one place.

Even the guys down the list are P5 guys…McD, Brownell, Devries… so if those guys are out because we can’t pull P5 coaches anymore (nvmnd the fact that when anyone asks about McCasland, everyone just assumes he’s Texas bound), then we are truly down to a world where McCollum is the leader in the clubhouse. 

I agree with you that guys like Brownell, Devries, and maybe Byington are poachable and are current p5 coaches.  

You had mentioned Calipari and Pitino moving to Kentucky as an example of poaching a coach.  What remains to be seen, is if a top 20 coach would move to a blue blood when they already have an established program in 2025.  

McCasland is no guarantee to leave Texas Tech for Austin.  He makes $4m a year, their largest NIL donor just sold his company for 4 billion dollars, and his team is currently top 10.  Unless they just don’t support him, I could see him being content where he is at.

Just stop with that crap.

I have been skeptical of McCollum’s D1 inexperience too, but I also realize that every Hall of Fame coach started out inexperienced and no two coaches are alike. McCollum is clearly no guarantee, but for better or worse he’s not Archie.

I think Archie had some question marks that were brought up early.  Team three point and free throw percentage was abysmal.  Carried right over to IU.

That is for sure my feeling.  While Goodman can be smug about it, I don’t doubt his information is accurate.  I am as diehard of a IU fan as they come, but I see similarities to Notre Dame football.  They always thought they had Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer lined up and lo and behold would hire Tyrone Willingham, Bob David or Charlie Weis .  Some of the names thrown out now just boggle my mind.  Collins, Brownell, Schertz, etc.  For the love…..

So it is fun to see Vogel's name; that would be a left-field hire of someone who's never led a college program. But he also had a stretch where he was one of the best coaches in the NBA. Has a title. Better postseason record than Stevens. Currently a consultant, rather than in a head job. I would take a flier on Vogel if he wanted the job.
