General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

No sh*t.  One of my favorite things about the Knight era was you pretty much knew what you were going to get.  Some nights other teams were better but the ebbs and flows and the massive coaching disparity was never there.   Indiana didn't shoot 12 fewer FT's than their opponent or miss them as consistently as they do now.  They generally had point guards.  Knight knew which 5 kids played well together and didn't keep trying to succeed with kids who didn't.  Woodson showed tonight why he was fir.....I mean why he felt it was best he retire.  He got abused tonight.
I grew up with later knight during calbert. The **** he did to kids was done to me in hs .Nobody blinked an eye. I didn't care it just seemed normal to be bitched at. Now you gotta kiss a kids making a million bucks..Glad I gave up coaching about five years ago. I could not do it now unless I was paid 4 million a year.

I know Otz is a rising star and thus hasn’t faced much criticism, but if you want to read some go see what ISU fans are saying about him after last nights heartbreaker.

Cliffs notes: obviously his team play hard, good defense and turns the other team over consistently. But late game offensive execution (off. execution being something I pointed out in another post) and possibly blocking out/rebounding being a theme that comes up with them.

I could live with a poor offensive coach if they can offset it with great defense and good enough recruiting to make the O effective at least. After Woody I don’t know if I can handle 4 more years of teams that don’t block out and rebound.

Yep, by all logic they SHOULD matter a lot — neutral games against teams from your own conference! And a better process would weigh them appropriately. But the committee based process…doesn’t.

There are also cases where a team that isn't close to consideration by the selection committee stealing the bid from the regular season conference champ - especially in the low-mid majors whose conference only gets the automatic qualifier into the tournament. IMO, it weakens the field.

The tournament field is a zero-sum game - for every team that gets in, another is left out... I am still confused why a conference plays a long regular season (14-20 conference games) only to lose their bid to the dance to be stolen by a team who happens to get hot and wins a 3-4-5 day conference tournament.

Well, a lot of these major league coaches do get paid $4,000,000 a year.

(always thinking about how it’s a different world in  small college sports and individuals coaches and players)

That one has reared its ugly head quite a bit during the Woodson era.  A big factor for the FT discrepancy in a lot of games, including last night, can be pointed at that.

Seven elite 8 appearances at Kentucky - IU has 11 in program history. Love him or hate him, his results can’t be downplayed. He lost his fastball maybe, but he had a tremendous run.

To be transparent Kentucky’s NIL began in the 1950’s and Cal perfected it during his tenure. Players get you there and great coaches win championships. Hence, only 1 natty for Cal out of 8 elite 8’s.

I’ll just say this, and people can think what they want regarding the quality of my fandom, but I think IU is taking a major risk if this is the route they choose.  I am a late 80s IU grad and I have been a huge fan since the mid 70s.  In other words, I am in the age group that grew up witnessing the potential of this program, and firmly believe everything is still in place to still be achieving at least close to that level (with the right coach, of course).  I have a funny feeling that many my age, and especially those of us in northern Indiana, have little interest in 6-8 years of somewhat improved but still underachieving mediocrity, with a promise of better days ahead if we just hang in there 6-8 more years, especially given that there is an IU grad killing it in his first year just to the north of us.  I am about at the end of my rope after 30 years of donating to and supporting a program that has consistently made decisions that led to underachievement.  So I really hope the administration is taking into consideration the chance they may lose a chunk of the fan base if something like this is in their plans.

a risk is going with Greg McDermott?

We had two good rounds of religion and John Calapari yesterday. We might need to change the name of this thread to off-topic. Hopefully, those leaks keep rolling out today. I'm sure everyone is starting to hear them. :-)

We need rumors so badly today. Yesterday was a complete off-topic clusterf*ck.

And I mean that in the most respectful way, my dear Mods. LOL
