General Coach Candidate News

That's pretty crazy, if true.

There are guys like Otz, Lloyd, and Drew that would come close.  But even they have their haters.  I really hope one of those 3 says yes.  Otherwise good chance we’re doing this again in a few years.

I really hope we can get Otz or Lloyd.  That would be a relief.  I just have no idea if our higher level of resources will shake them loose.  $2M+ more for players every year can make a very big difference, that’s two elite players on a roster.  But getting bigger name coaches to move is tough.  Scott and Pam’s pitch will be key.  Of course may be they already got it done?  Idk.

He was offered the general manager position and accepted, but spin it as quitting if you want.

I seriously can't believe after 25 years of mostly sh*tty coaches, we have people who are opposed to someone like Brad Stevens coaching here. Mind-blowing stuff.

I have not seen one person opposed to Brad Stevens, just people who understand Brad Stevens isn’t going to return after a decade absence, snap his fingers, and magically have IU as a national title contender in a year or two.

That and it’s completely pointless to speculate because he has zero interest in this job. There’s nearly 1000 pages worth of speculation on a candidate that has a better chance of retiring and moving to the moon tomorrow than he does coaching Indiana. It’s so freaking silly that Brad Stevens continues to dominate the general candidate thread.

When I see people use the word “grind”referring to the men’s basketball head coaching position I laugh to myself because I’ve worked many jobs that I would consider a real grind day in and day out, but I don’t think I would consider that job on its hardest day to be a “grind” even at the highest level, what are they out there digging every day for bandwidth?  They are also instant millionaires and live in the lap of luxury. Lol

Grind, not as in hard labor, but requiring a high level of commitment and effort. Recruiting is basically an around the clock exercise and you can’t let anybody else beat you by putting in more effort. Building relationships with HS kids and their families is a challenge. You’ve got to be constantly traveling to games and tournaments, doing in home visits, hosting kids on campus, etc. doesn’t leave a lot of time for family stuff. Portal and NIL probably help to a degree but we see from Woody you need more than that. That’s not even covering the actual basketball coaching, which is not easy, but they are well compensated for producing results. Those results require a big time and effort commitment. So it’s a grind even if they’re not doing hard labor. Lol… you have to love doing it / be extremely committed to be highly successful.

True but they have a huge support staff and Woody never hardly even graced the recruiting trail.

Personally I’m holding out hope for Otz or Drew. Land either and imo we’re a monster program again quickly

If it’s not Stevens i think it’ll be Drew & I don’t think Baylor is going to go too far in this tourney so we’ll know sooner rather than later.

Don’t change the subject.

Did you not just tell people to change the subject? Lol

*Jeff Goodman tweets that Brad isn’t a candidate* - it’s a smokescreen! Brad’s on the way!

*Cody Zeller attends a high school basketball game* - omg he’s our new GM! He’s recruiting for Brad!

*Cody Zeller attends an IU basketball game* - omg he really is our new GM! Brad is in the way!

Compared to

*Questions on whether a coach who quit coaching four years ago and repeatedly turned down the IU job would actually want the job and stay long term* - blasphemy! Stop that talk right now!

Like I said, folks deify Brad Stevens and lash out when people dare question him.

I hope not, I don’t have a good feeling about Drew at this stage of the game.

That's the IU way....we might as well start the "fire ___________" thread and fill it in when it's announced....even if it's Stevens.

Brad Stevens quit too for a non-coaching job. What in his background suggests he wants to come grind the way a top college coach needs to grind? He quit his NBA coaching job 4 years ago, and that gig is less of a daily grind, involves minimal “recruiting ,” and comes with a months long, defined offseason.

This. Brad has it made in Boston, and he is on top with a recent championship. We have a better chance of getting him to come into the Pacers organization as GM instead of taking his chance at under the microscope job at IU. I believe he is indeed the smokescreen and someone like Pearl/Drew/May will be hired.

You’re not spending 12 hour days repairing roofs in 90 degree heat as a P5 head coach, but this isn’t a job you excel at if you’re not all in. Like, we literally just fired a coach last month who failed because he half-a**ed the job for the past four years.
