Deliberate is a fun way of saying “slowest pace in the country”. No thanks. We watch basketball to be entertained and holding the ball for what feels like an eternity each possession isn’t fun to watch

About Ben McCollum, I listened to Kent Sterling recently and he mentioned about McCollum and his offensive style being painfully slow...similar to Tony Bennett level of pace. I didn't know much about McCollum's style so I was a bit surprised to hear that. We all know winning cures everything, but would you think IU's fanbase be ok with such style?

If he comes in and we win and find ourselves as a perennial top 15 school and advanced in the tournament we would not care, initially.  If we don’t win a championship and see few final 4’s, then we might start to think that style is why we haven’t won a championship. But, if we he was delivering like the AZ Miller did with elite 8’s/sweet 16’s regularly over the next 5 years we would not worry about style

Have you watched Drake this year? They are not holding the ball for an eternity each possession. They are passing and cutting working for the best shot.

Play style? Don't care.

But people are trashing a guy like Cronin who has nine 25+ win seasons.

McCollum hasn’t coached 25 games in D1.

I have watched them a lot because I have been interested in seeing his style and whether I would want him to coach at IU. They pass up fast breaks and open shots over and over and over. It’s brutal to watch

Agree.  I like the way they play. It’s much better than watching some of those mid-2010’s Tony Bennett teams.

Yeah just watched them struggle at home with a struggling ISU team.   Blew a 13 pt lead     Lucky they won in OT.  My trees are not good this year so it was good to see them compete at Drake.  Had a chance to win it at the end of regulation but got stripped at the rim

Yeah, my issue is less with play style and more his body of work (lack of years). They play 7 guys this year, 4 D2 transfers and a JUCO. He’s always played a slow pace but I think passing up fast breaks is somewhat intentional by design with this group. I am baking in an assumption that he would coach not like a carbon copy of this one year. He is still young so I would assume able to adapt on some level. He is smart enough I think to figure things out given time and resources. I think it’s a moot point anyway since he’s very unlikely to be hired IMO. Totally fair to not like passing up open shots, frustrates me too when I watch them.

I’m a teacher and coach- former student and player goes to Ole Miss of all places. He reached out this week to ask me if I thought IU would go for Beard. He said several things  but a couple of interest:

1. Well known there that Beard is/has been interested in IU.

2. He still has an alcohol problem. Students see him hammered out and about regularly in Oxford.

Define "alcohol problem". Is he out in the streets shouting at little old ladies while drunk or getting hammered at a bar, like everybody else?

Because I'm bored during a snoozer Super Bowl, here's how fast some of the mentioned coaches play on offense (not saying they're all candidates)

Kenpom adjusted tempo for this season (possessions per 40 minutes adjusted for opponent)

1. Alabama

47. Arizona

49. Vanderbilt

50. Gonzaga

55. Michigan

90. Florida

97. Iowa St

115. Auburn

120 IU (for reference)

145. Creighton

150. Ole Miss

168. Missouri

172. Marquette

201. Miss St.

227. Texas A&M

267 Texas Tech

301. Baylor

304. UCLA

331. West Virginia

342. Clemson

364. Drake (dead last according to kenpom)

And, the best W/L record among that list?

Yeah but they aren’t a binary choice. You can win playing with pace and lose playing 55 possessions games. It’s about execution.

How is it different? That is exactly what I’ve compared it to. I feel like I’m watching 1930s peach basket basketball or something. Slow, pumpfake, pass, slow, pumpfake, pass

Sconnie? It not a pretty sight.

He’s bar-hammering old ladies, and getting shouting streets a little drunk.

DO WE WANT THAT AT INDIANA?

Lord only knows how many times are we going to have to debate Beard's DV arrest over the next 5 weeks...

In addition to it meaning that IU has a good basketball team again, I want the next coach to be successful so I don't have to see a bunch of posts pining for Beard to be coach.
