IU needs to win the press conference with whoever they hire. The fanbase is about as pissed off/on edge as a fanbase can get after the past 9 seasons during which we’ve won a whopping 1 tournament game. Trot out some middling guy and the temperature will still be scalding hot. Whoever comes in isn’t going to get 2-3 seasons to “figure things out.” They will need to win immediately.

How many guys do that?

Yeah, I’ve been saying I think it’s gonna be May.  It makes perfect sense. I’m not completely stoked about it, but I like a lot about it.  It seems like the Indiana/Dolson track of doing things.  I think all the Stevens talk is dream work by insiders.  This one makes sense.  We could certainly do worse.  Idk.  I should be really excited about it.  I think he’d recruit Indiana incredibly.  He’s very well liked. Lots of good things.

I’ll warm up to it.  (Still predict Fife, Howard, and maybe Mullins joins him). Am I crazy?  Probably.

May has a decent floor and has high enough potential to have us at the top of the conference regularly.

You'll have half the fan base against him from day one.  The war drums would already be beating at his opening press conference.  Would absolutely have to make the S16 year one.  Alford made 3 in 4 years at UCLA.  Got fired.

Stevens, Pearl, Few, May, Beard. The Texas Tech and Iowa state guys too probably. Maybe Cronin. Could be other guys I’m just not thinking of. With the portal and NIL I think an above average coach gets us solidly in the tournament in year 1 and rolling in year 2. They won’t have to have a title contender in year 2, but a couple years of under .500 conference ball to start just won’t cut it. That’s possible even if you don’t “win the press conference.” No one was blown away by Louisville‘s hire last year and they’re sitting at 18-6 and 2nd in the ACC.

There are just too many recent examples of very rapid turnarounds for the fanbase to patiently wait through yet another slow rebuild.

What else could he say?!!?

”I’m not going to be the coach at Indiana next year. I will be the coach of Michigan next year.”

He’s a very smart man. He made a choice about what to say and he left the door wide open.

Coulda gone all-Roy Williams and said, "I don't give a sh-t about Indiana right now."

LOL.

Ok, I think you and I define winning the presser differently. I think of someone who will absolutely do that as a name that casual and semi-serious fans know immediately as a winner. Nothing to prove or even have to learn about them. That’s, what, Stevens, Pearl and mmmaaayyybbbeee May and that’s probably about it. I absolutely don’t think Beard wins the presser in that way. But if you’re willing to look at a guy like McCasland as a guy who can, and I would agree with that because he’s a really good coach, then I’m not sure winning the presser should be that concerning because there are a bunch guys with the ability to come in here and win.

If you're talking about Beard, I agree with you.

May...not so much.

Half the fan base won’t be against but the love May gets on this board doesn’t exist with the average fan. He wouldn’t win the presser at this point. That might change if he makes a deep run in the tournament.

Half the fanbase is gonna be against an IU alumni, Bob Knight student manager, has a Final Four, and has a team that won 8 games total a year ago at 10-2 and tied for second in the B1G? I think that's maybe just a tad hyperbolic.

I really like Dusty May.  I think he's a fantastic human being.  I'd love to have him as my neighbor.

I’m sure I’ll get ridiculed for this, but for some reason, I can’t get myself pumped or sold on Dusty as much as I hate to say it and have tried. Besides his one final four run year at FAU, he’s 108-70.

And this is just a question. Not directed at anyone, but a honest question.

If Dusty wasn’t from Terre Haute and went to IU, would everyone want him so bad?

Would I be happy with Dusty. Yes, as long as he wasn’t option 2 or 3.

Here's a question:

How many people are there below the age of 50 who served as head coach of an NCAA men's basketball team that appeared in a Final Four?

Never mind, the answer is three.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.  Can you name them?

Bonus question:

And this is just a question.  Not directed at anyone, but an honest question.

How much of a role do you suppose financial or material inducements (NIL, cars, houses, a tractor) played in building those final four rosters?
