General Coach Candidate News

Neither is Beard but you and others keep calling for him to get hired.

The only reason Beard wouldn't be a candidate is because of IU's own undoing. It was the other way around with Stevens.

Beard would leave Ole Miss before their season was over if it meant getting the job. He's as realistic as it gets in terms of interest. Ball is totally in IU's court however.

If you're Dolson, gotta grow a pair and hand a blank check to Lloyd's agent, Drew's agent, Donovan's agent and ask "what will it take" and work from there. Act like a damned blue blood instead of Northwestern.

Pretty sure this is what UCLA did and they ended up with....Mick Cronin.

To me Beard feels like such a natural fit as Louisville's first choice.

If IU pulled a UCLA, we'd offer every coach who was looking for a raise, hiring our 7th choice lol. My 7th choice would be the Muss Buss, which would make for an interesting few years haha.

@Chris007 do you think we'd ask B*** S****** again, or would we go straight to May?

Haha true as he can go straight to the distillery, or just have a whiskey barrel rolled into his home.

If May makes noise in the NCAA's this year, I'm all in for him, if he flames out, I'm all in for Beard. Maybe he can live in the apartments above the tap or at Upland.

He could just call Kevin Wilson and ask for tips on finding the best watering holes.

As he should be, good on them. They would be dumb not to hire him. Same goes for anybody with a coaching vacancy.

Just one more revived regional power that we'll have to deal with on a consistent basis.

IMO your take is purely from a basketball perspective. On that front I fully agree with you.

But there's more to consider; IU as a university and the IU basketball program have an established brand. Chris Beard does not fit our brand. Dusty May would.

Man…sometimes I want to laugh at how inept UCLA has been with coaching searches during the same general time frame as us. Then I remember that despite said ineptness, they got a title with Harrick, 3 straight FF’s with Howland, 1 FF with Cronin, and several S16’s or whatever with guys like Alford and freaking Steve Lavin.

You almost have to try hard to be as bad as we have.

There's ZERO living college basketball player or recruit who has ever seen Indiana as an elite basketball program. Zilch, none, nada Our established "brand" has lead to nothing but mediocre results the better part of the last two decades. Chris Beard is probably one of two realistic candidates who can return Indiana to the height of that "brand" and he could do it rather quickly.

I don't have anything against Dusty May. I actually like Dusty May. I think he could do very well at IU with emphasis on the word could. I wouldn't bet on it though. There's just as good of a chance as he's the next Archie Miller. If IU wants to be good in basketball again they'll hire Chris Beard (or Bruce Pearl) and they wouldn't have to think twice about it.

But I get it.

Does anyone truly believe Woodson is gone after this year (by his own doing or the administration's)?

I do not but I am interested in the opinion of people more in the loop.

I think if the season goes off the rails there's more than a slim chance he resigns or retires. I think the IU administration could make things a lot better for him if they give him an incentive to retire. But no, I don't think he's going to be fired.

No. They'd probably still bring him back if he lost every remaining game by 50.

And they've gotten a FF and 2 Sweet 16s.

A total fluke of a final four. And if you think 2 sweet 16's are noteworthy, Tom Cream had 3 and it wasn't good enough.

I know it's a no but I'm just curious. Jay Wright is also worth Brad Stevens (presuming 10 million a year) money right?

Worth it, yes. But again, another coach who has no interest in competing in this landscape of college basketball. He retired from the pinnacle of basketball for a reason.
