Stevens to IU was very much in play...practically a done deal until the rug was swept from underneath us. People can convince themselves otherwise, but Stevens was very close to happening.

So what are you saying? Stevens was interested/wanted the job, turned down an offer to become the highest paid coach in college basketball history, flashed a number and IU couldn’t agree to terms? But they had him right?

If I was Dolson, that’s exactly the story I’d have my PR team drum up if I went from potentially hiring Brad Stevens to ultimately hiring Mike Woodson 48 hours later. Obviously it worked.

Also, we need the juice about Matta. That entire thing wasn’t normal. Lies were told.

We differ here.  There are a lot of coaches that have baggage.  That’s one thing, but he has demons as you put it.  I would hope there is 0.0% chance that he would even be considered.  From a young woman’s perspective that just graduated from IU, the thought of him on campus makes me cringe.

You obviously aren't considering the importance of some dude's need to not think it sucks to watch his favorite basketball team. They're just demons. That's gonna have to take a back seat to some guy who's just darn tired of watching his basketball team lose. (heavy, heavy sarcasm regarding this trash take, just to be very clear)

I think what a few people are saying is that the contract terms would’ve been lucrative and fine, but that Stevens and his family had a tough decision about where they wanted to live and what lifestyle he wanted for the next 10 years.

personally? I have no idea if that’s how it shook down.

From what I’ve always been told by the one source whom I consider to be reliable, Stevens met with a few prominent figures at IU over dinner WHILE the Celtics were in Indianapolis to gauge interest in which he emphatically told them no thanks. This actually happened while Archie Miller was still employed.

After Archie was fired, IU offered up a Hail Mary contract to at least say they tried knowing full and well he was going to reject it. Stevens to this day still denies that offer was ever made.

Who knows what happened, but he’s not here and not ever coming here and you just don’t turn that kind of money down if you’re legitimately interested in returning college. Just like as an athletic department, you don’t go from legitimately making an offer to make BS the highest paid coach in the game to turning around and hiring 62 year old Mike Woodson 48 hours later. Theres no way Dolson went from BS to spinning the wheel and landing on Mike Woodson like that.

I don’t think Stevens considered the offer for a second and it was a huge smoke screen for what Dolson knew was going to be massive backlash for hiring Woodson. If you’re willing to pay $10mil/yr to Brad Stevens, you’re certainly going to entertain a much more qualified applicant pool than one that identifies Mike Woodson was plan B. It’s not hard to offer somebody $10mil/yr when you already know their answer.

Like I said, I have no idea either way.

Going from the smoke of Brad Stevens to hiring Mike Woodson was some of the most anticlimactic stuff to happen in this past decade. What a freaking bummer that was.

There is a 0% chance IU would hire Beard. It takes a mutual interest which isn't there. That makes it as unrealistic as Stevens.
And this is why we will continue to suck. We need a proven coach for this job.

Because that was the plan all along. You don’t go from willingly spending $10mil/yr on a coach to not considering anyone else who doesn’t even possess a year of college coaching experience. A lot easier for (most) the fan base to finally move on from BS once they actually hear no. BS was never coming here.

IU drew up the contract and terms that the Stevens asked for. IU met with his agent (his wife) at a booster house in Florida discussed the deal. IU was under the assumption they had a deal. Tracy said she would give it to Brad to sign when they got back to Boston. Within two hours it was announced he got a promotion from the Celtics. I can tell you the booster, where they live and anything else you want to know.

But also hada mod call me a liar on here so believe what you want.

Brad Stevens wasn’t elevated to his current role w the Celtics until June 2nd, nearly 3 months after he supposedly turned down $10mil/yr.

There are plenty of those around who aren't women beaters. In fact, there are plenty of coaches that can win championships who aren't named Chris Beard since Beard has 0 NC won.

People can choose to believe who they want.  I know who I choose to believe. I remember hearing pretty much the same thing on campus.  Not from insiders or anything like that but what you described was the big rumor going around.  I kind of have a problem with your last sentence but not with you.

Chris Beard will win multiple national titles before he retires, just a matter of where.
