Indiana won’t win with an up and comer. When has that worked in the B1G at the level Indiana is wanting?

Make a statement hire!  Take no prisoners!  Knock 2-3 straight recruiting classes out of the park.  Win.  Don’t lose momentum. That’s the recipe.

Well let's see

Tom Izzo

Chris Holtzman

Juwan Howard

Pretty much all the top coaches started out at a low level and moved up the ladder.  Everyone wants Oats and 3 years ago he was in Buffalo.

True, but he’s proving himself at a higher level.  Personally I’d still like to see a little more longevity out of him but he seems to have the “it” factor to gamble on.

Umm not saying it will work for IU...

But you might want to do some rethinking. The two most accomplished coaches ever in the BIG have been up and comers when they took the BIG job...

Knight and izzo?

Dedicated IU Faithful: "Mr. Dolson, it's been a woefully long time since the basketball program has shown any semblance of a return to prominence; could you at least give us some minor reassurance regarding your plan to replace Archie Miller to make IU relevant again in light of all these conflicting 'insider sources,' player transfer portal entries and social media reports claiming to know what's going on?"

Scott Dolson:  "Well, you know, my plan has a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-you's... And uh, a lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Dolson's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, coaching candidate regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber."

Izzo, too long ago.  Not the same environment.

Holtmann-3 years of success at Butler.  Moderate risk.

Juwan Howard- is a good argument.  He’s got a special fame that has allowed amazing recruiting.  So far he has knocked it out of the park.  He’s unique.  Which up and coming coach can walk into Indiana and land the #1 recruiting class?  I’ll take that guy.

Why would Oats leave Alabama. He seems to have no problems recruiting talent to play there and he gets to build his own thing. At IU, he would have to rebuild a program and coach in the shadow of a HOF coach who still lives in town.

Closer to home? Maybe....fan base, icon status....bunch of stuff you won’t get there.

When he started and built his hall of fame resume.  Yes.  Once you have a hall of fame resume things get easier, and you’re not an up an comer.  He didn’t start in the 1 n done era.

Juwan Howard is an amazing counter example to my point.   But, he’s cultural icon.  He’s a unicorn.  Our best similar option would be Cheaney but zero chance he recruits like Howard.  Zero.  Juwan Howard should be like Patrick Ewing but he’s not.  He’s got it going.

Izzo was hired as an up and comer and has won or shared 3 of the last 4 B1G titles. Not sure how he doesn't count. Too successful for too long?

Throw in Thad Matta and Matt Painter.

How much Howard success can be attribute to Phil Martelli, especially since Howard’s recruiting impact hasn’t really come into play yet

Okay your original question was when has an up and comer worked in the BIG. You were provided multiple examples showing it has literally worked multiple times. At the highest level.

It is okay to say you were wrong . Not move the goalposts

I think I would prefer to be in a position to not only attract guys like Beard, Oats, Drew etc but to also land them. We will know a bit more who we are after this search. If those guys say no because they can win where they are then we likely have to find the right up and comer ourselves.

Not moving goal posts. Picking coaches prior to the 1 n done era, changes the debate completely.  If you don’t see this point, it’s all irrelevant.

Whatever. Continue to think you know more than everyone like normal it’s cool.

Not a good look, but cool

I guess maybe anything that happened before 2000 didn't happen
