General Coach Candidate News

The assistant coach is not a faculty member. I would speculate that over half of IU employees do not have degree or hold a position that does not require their degree.
From my very brief look into this it is apparently a thing. Seems odd to me as well. I guess Shawn Kemp is off the list

I will say this about Woodson.. If it’s between him and the mid major flavor of the month, I’d go with him. I want us to avoid a mid major guy at all costs. If Woodson would have his teams play an offense that doesn’t make me want to stab my eyes out like Archie’s did then I’d give him a shot.

I agree 100%.  The only option I don't want is the mid major guy with one or maybe two tournament runs.

The more I think about Woodson I’m actually not opposed to it at all.  I just keep thinking about him being able to tell kids “When I coached Carmelo Anthony we did this…” or “When we defended Kevin Durant we would do this…” or “There was that time I had the Knicks in the Conference Semis…”.  He may not be used to the college landscape but he is used to coaching young players and I think he would absolutely clean house in recruiting the Indy area and possibly the whole state.

Not that it should matter but don't you have to have a degree to be an assistant? I don't believe any of those players you named have one. But I could be wrong.

FWIW....Here's the official job description for an Assistant Coach position at IU.

Woodson isn’t starting from nothing either. If he can convince Duncomb to stay and allows Lander to play a style that suits him (also keep in mind he is YOUNG), then we can have a team that can get to the tournament. Parlay that into recruiting success and we are in business in year 2 or 3. One thing many either refuse to understand or refuse to admit, is that, there aren’t bad coaches in the NBA. Every coach in the NBA is one of the best in the world at their job. It’s why you see such a high fail rate amongst good college coaches who attempt the transition. Woodson being in the NBA for so long, is a testament to his ability as a coach.

Also, kids don’t give a **** about the coaches age. Woodson gets Jamaal Crawford and Carmelo Anthony on a recruiting call, they’re not gonna care about his age, I promise you that.

He is sorta starting from nothing. We have about 2 players on the team currently, Franklin and Race. Both are very inconsistent. We have some pups with potential but Michigan had a far better team for Howard than we do for our next coach.

Woodson being in the NBA for so long is a testament to the fraternity. There's a reason why NBA recycles coaches.

Kids don't know how good Jamal Crawford or Melo were come on. These kids have social media to stare into. They know the big names. If we can get a coach who says "I coached Tatum" then that's different.

If we're hiring John or Woodson then we should know that by tomorrow.

The only candidates still in the tournament that are realistic.. well honestly I don't see Drew or Mussleman being realistic.

This is the video game age. These 18 year old kids were playing 2K on their XBox when they were younger. At the very least, they’ll know how good these guys were just from that

A master's degree to coach basketball. lol what

That’ll be listed as preferred for just about any job these days. I’ve seen that listed as preferred on high school job postings but it doesn’t mean a whole lot.

So Dolson has made it clear that he wants an NBA-style offense ...... is that because he thinks it's the best way to lure top talent or because "modern" offense is the best way to win games at the college level?

I realize it could very well be both, but the difference really does speak to Dolson's vision for the program ----- is IU a "destination school" for the 4 and 5 stars (if so we know who we'll be competing with) or is IU a place where kids can commit for 4 years and win that doesn't necessarily require the top talent?

Putting it more succinctly are we:

1) Hoping we can get a coach who can consistently recruit NBA talent

2) Hoping we can get a coach who can develop kids and ultimately win at the college level with lesser talent (not necessarily future NBA players) but kids who play hard and play with a high basketball IQ on both ends of the floor?

I have no concern with Woodson as a candidate overall, except I believe that puts Dolson's vision firmly in the "1" camp ----- and if we're trying to be Kentucky or Duke while running a clean program I say good luck. I think the Dolson thesis may be mistaken if that's the case. Hope to be wrong if that's the direction we go and certainly am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I agree with this in general based on what I've seen, except I think Dolson would hire the best possible coach regardless of the intangible benefits. That said, I think BS was the ideal because he did check both boxes -- recruiting pro-level talent as well as developing players in a cohesive system. It's important to note I think that Dolson said "a system recruits want to play in" -- not players. Recruits implies high-potential players.

(But ultimately I think if a classic-style college stalwart was interested, the interest would be mutual).

I mean, you obviously start with your dream hire and work your way down. I don’t know that the admin ever preferred some of the guys this board does over TM - and I’d argue rightfully so.

And sure, there may be other calls to make before you get to JB and MW (or even TM), but if they’re not interested, that process takes five minutes.

I also just don’t know all of what they’ve heard already from the agents of the guys still in the tourney. It could be that for one or two of them they’ve been told “I’ll talk to you when we’re eliminated” in which case you move forward with narrowing your pool but don’t make the hire yet if it’s possible he could rise to the top of your list. For example, it could be that they still want to talk to someone like Porter before they make they’re hire, even if they favor JB and MW right now.

Nony, do you think (or are you perhaps hearing) they want to talk to Porter????

I’ll admit I’m not sure and haven’t heard that. I’m just speculating that *if* we don’t get a JB or MW announcement this week, that’s a very plausible reason why.
