Fair point, they also hired a former player similar to Woodson at Indiana. Duke and UNC hired former players. I do think that's not discussed enough in terms of college basketball coaching changes nowadays. Folks are retiring and the new era is upon us.

Very true about the former players. I guess you can say we tried that route lol

Louisville hired a mid major coach last cycle that hasn’t won a tournament game as well

IU has 1 winning conference record in the last 9 years but somehow people believe IU should be able to pull sitting power 5 coaches that have things rolling at their current school.  Times have definitely changed

Exactly. Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and Louisville have all been in the same situation as us for their most recent coaching searches. And I think all of those programs would give a hard look at McCollum right now if they were hiring this cycle.

Kentucky hired a guy 12 months ago with 0 NCAA tournament wins. That's just where college basketball is now.

He also had 4 years experience at byu where he had an almost .700 winning percentage. 8 years total d1 experience. The Louisville coach had like 10 years of d1 experience

There is an article on ESPN.com but I could only read a little bit of it because it is behind a paywall. The main thing was where are all the big time coaches. It was talking about why Indiana other big time programs are having trouble getting top tier coaches to come to their schools. Also said if Texas and Villanova comes open they probably will have the same problem.

Have ESPN+ and read it - not much too it - says 2 favorites for IU are McCullom and Brownell.

Talk a little about teams searching mostly said  other coaches are 'cost prohibitive' if even interested - listed all the big names buys outs - all are over 10 mil.

so that's the predetermined line for success? That's where McCollum would need to get to know he'd be successful? or would that goal post move once he obtains it, as well?

3 of his years at BYU were in the WCC

If there are strategic smokescreen/leaks, I can see McCollum's name being exactly that.  The sudden, multiple "leaks" in the last day or two makes me suspicious.*

* DISCLAIMER: I don't know squat and my intuition is 100% unreliable.

Any conference regular season or tourney championships? Any national championships? I think some are underselling the winning that McCollum does.

UK got lucky by pouncing on Cal at the exact right time.  Remember that we could've had him too at one point.  Their other post Pitino hires have been Tubby, the drunken psycho, and Pope.

UNC currently has Davis who will likely be fired next year.  Before Roy it was Doherty and Guthridge. Duke hired a former player who had never been a HC before.

We would be lucky to land McCollum.

Either way he had alot more experience and a track record to look at. Some of you want to turn over a program with the top nil in the big ten to a guy with one year of d1 experience.

Im on the Will Wade train. Screw it.

Dolson isn't touching that. Dolson is a clean face kind of guy, probably wants someone who wouldn't hurt a fly. Will Wade will pay someone to hurt a fly.

If McCollum retired today there is a legitimate argument he’d eventually make the basketball HOF as a coach. Several D2 coaches have made it with less success than he has had. They just stayed at their schools for decades to accumulate more all-time wins.

Crazy Idea.  IU hires Ben McCollum, who in turn hires recently fired big ten head coach Fran McCaffery as an assistant to help navigate the big ten.  Fran gets to be closer to his kids and work a few years until he wants to retire.  I wouldn’t hate it.

Get to watch FranCon in person? Absolutely. Seriously though his is considered a brilliant offense mind from what other coaches say. Plus I'd get to watch his head explode in person.
