What gut punch? All I've read the last few days is people getting all worked up about a commitment that didn't happen and then being so disappointed they resort to hot takes about the program not being able to finish. I see it all the time on here and social media with coaching changes and recruitment. I'll let things play out before I start saying, Woody can't finish and the team won't be any good next year. Way too soon tell.
Heck, when Love entered the Portal no one hot excited until it was learned their was mutual interest. That's all it was and it didn't work out.

Exactly!  Let’s not worry about it until it happens.  It’s still early in the process, let’s let it play out!

Not on April 3, if we don't have any commits on July 3rd freak out

We’re going to have commits by 7/3. It’s who committed. I don’t think this will happen but If we do swing and miss at our first targets and settle then questions should be asked.

I’ve said this in other posts , but it’s worth repeating here: This program - for almost 20 - had been badly mismanaged.

It will take time. Look at who won last night. They hired their coach (Hurley) in 2018. They didn’t recruit highly ranked players (Clingan was highest rated at 37 in RSCI rankings) but they recruited athletic kids that they DEVELOPED. Kids that fit what they wanted in what they need for their style of play.

Look at IU. We’ve got a pair of guards coming in (Newton and Cupps)  that have a combination of athleticism and pure basketball ability. We have a post (Reneau) who showed promise; we’ve added post depth with Sparks. And we have two athletic wings in Banks and Gunn - long, lanky guys.

If X gets his waiver and we add a guy let me Shedrick, we’re looking at the beginning of possibly a good team with a solid summer of development. Within two years we could be solid enough to make a run.

After 20 of watching IU spin its wheels, it’s frustrating as hell to watch them have to build. We just need Woodson to get us back to having a team good enough, with the right elements, to be able to make a run when opportunities present themselves as they did for UConn.

.

You don't hire someone Woodson's age expecting a Hurley/UCONN build because they wont be around long; Hurley is 50 so he'll be around longer than someone 65 will be.  You hire someone the better part of 70 expecting a quick turnaround.

Free reign to do whatever he wanted too

.....and potentially destroy the culture Coach Woodson is building right now.

I want Love's talent and potential just like everyone else,....but not for this price, $$$$$ + free reign = disaster.

He can want all day long, but at some point, like his dad said....he wants to be coached.  Well, he also wants free reign on the court, but to be successful he has to be coachable and think no longer as a me, but as a we.

I hope I am wrong about the ebb and flow of Love's recruitment. First and foremost, I want good players that want to play for Coach Woodson and Indiana University. Them money is just a bonus. Unfortunately,....this is the world we live in today.

No necessarily.  Maybe you hire him to stop a sinking ship.  Woody was a “safe” hire in that he could bring in a five year period of “stability.”  His connection to the tradition of IU greatness and NBA cred is enough to stop the bleeding.  If he’s top 4 in the Big and makes the tournament each year, that’s the base the next coach gets to work from.  I know we want more, but we have to think longer term.  We knew this would be the gap year since we got lucky with TJD coming back the last two years.  Pitino is more of the quick turnaround guy cause he’s done it in several places.

That was always the risk / reward with Love. Sounds like too big of risk to me.

The point that you don't hire someone that age expecting a build stands.  Recruits for 24 or 25 don't know if they'd really even be playing for him or for how long and I imagine other schools recruiting them are using his age against us.

No reason to get worked up about Love. At first, we weren't even going to recruit him, everyone was ok, then we decide to talk to him and everyone thinks he was ours but after talking to him, it was decided it wasn't a good fit by either him or us. We move on.

Some of the best players to be in the portal very possibly haven't even announced their intentions to enter it yet.

Some good news, X will announce he's back today on the HH podcast.

back in what regard? NCAA officially granting him a 6th year, back?

Honest question. This is not directed at just you. I have seen lots of posters today saying similar.

What has went so bad? How are we trending wrong? Not a single portal target we have had has committed anywhere yet. Love is just one (while also no official) and for all we know the zoom call had him hearing things from Woodson he didn’t want to hear. Remember what TJD said about his first Woodson meeting? Maybe Love didn’t like that. Would we even want him if he wasn’t willing to hear that kind of feedback?

This past season was pretty darn good with the injuries. We also have lots of positive momentum with potentially 2 players drafted round 1 and neither was projected as so this time last year. That show’s development and helps recruiting.

While we need help, I don’t think this roster is the crap heap many seem to think it is. We should expect some growth from our current players. That still happens.  Also think many are under selling the huge benefit a PG like X is.

Just seems like so many here like to pile into the negative quick. Things are solid and trending right until they aren’t and we are far from that. This time last year we didn’t even have Malik or JHS. Still lots of time.

....Here, Here! Finally....OMG. Yes, X is and elite level PG and if he is granted another year at IU, we will be in decent shape. Another thing, I don't think people are giving Cupp's potential, much attention either. I'm not saying he is going to walk in an start, but he is someone who will definitely surprise many people. I mean,....how many of us thought 1st TEAM ALL BIGTEN freshman, Braeden Smith would have done what he did for Purdue? I know they have different gifts, but man....I'm super excited about incoming freshmen Cupps and Newton.

A few days ago when he tweeted something along the lines of "time to get to work" I pretty much assumed we were good to go.

Thanks/props again to that poster on our board who explained that the three Hoosier Classic games weren't counted in the calculations and that X would be a relatively easy waiver approval.

Yeah as much as I don't like to say it, it was a Cubs fan if I remember correctly. He was spot on.
