As a first step I would sell the West balcony student seats to the public as season tickets.  there are already a number of alumni up there in CC and DD.  Step two is to sell the East balcony off leaving the main for the kids.  I think one of the many reason kids don't come is that they are afraid they will end up in the balcony.  Self fulfilling prophecy gives you empty rows in GA main.  If they have a ticket that is ensured to be Main GA I think that section fills more often.

I like most of what Glass has done but he dug in on this "largest student section" claim and it isn't working except for big games.

I am not against this at all. I just don't know how well the balcony seats would sell outside of big games, so IU would lose money unless they can sell half the balcony tickets (they cost twice as much as student tickets) each game. Otherwise they lose money from what they make now.

If they become elite again and students still don't show up this would work really well, but given that the balcony games don't completely sell for winter break games (although close) I have a hard time believing they could sell many every game.

Lots to consider.

Since we're honoring the 1980s team and Knight and Keady might attend, I've already got Archie's pregame speech ready. (I'm a 1980s movie geek and stole this from one of my favorites -- "Vision Quest.") It's short, sweet and all you really need!

"Listen up a second, fellas. This is one special night. You know it, and I know it. Now let's go out there and make sure Purdue knows it."

I love that movie. I had a crush on the girl when I was about 12 watching that movie.

I would love to be in the Hall tomorrow. Sounds like some big names (Former coach, players, recruits) going to be in attendance. This is the type of game that you just cannot lose. Very similar to the Ohio State game. This is an absolute must win for lots of reasons. Purdue, although they have been more talented in years past, have owned Archie and IU. That ends this year. Eastern, Wheeler, and Haarms have not improved one bit this year and that is hurting them. No excuses tomorrow. After IU beat Michigan State I thought they would go 1-2 in the next three games. Here they are 0-3. You can't lose four plus games in a row this time of the year. At the start of the year I thought that this would be a 8-10 seed kind of team and I still feel that way. After they beat Michigan State I thought they could be maybe a little bit better. This team needs Justin, Al, Devonte, De'Ron to play the role this team needs them to play. I really do love the core of Rob, Armaan, Jerome, TJD, and Joey. I'll take IU by 20 tomorrow. I think something changes.

One of my favorite childhood movies. Great movie for it’s time. Also LOVED Youngblood the hockey one. Rob Lowe’s girlfriend was purrrty!

The perfect pregame speech would be for Knight to come into the locker room and say "I don't know about you kids or any of the SOB's in this place, but I'm f*ckin' tired of losing to Purdue!"

The team probably needs it. You could easily replace some names within in that, and relate it to Archie’s teams. I know he mention Graham so you could probably just say Durham. He mentioned being tired of an 8-10 record. Archie has 9-9 and 8-12. And he mentioned being “sick and f’ing tired of losing to Purdue.” Archie has yet to beat Purdue.

The longer they wait the tougher it is.  The alumni in west balcony are season tickets and that is what I would sell the rest as.

Student tickets where way better back in the day.  You got a mix of good and bad seats, but everything was assigned.  You could sell your premier game and cover the cost of the tickets.  When the parents came, you could use a student ticket with an up charge.  Place was always packed, but winning probably had a lot to do with that.

Archie just said Race is making progress and depending on how things look today and tomorrow, he might be able to play Saturday.

thanks for the update. Was just about to ask if anyone had heard about race.

Really hope he plays tomorrow. But if not, seems like he should be a go for Iowa and the rest of the season.

Precisely on the winning, but again to me that system sucked as you would end up with the balcony half the time and students showed up late (at least in my era in late 2000's). I'm much rather be GA most of the time and have a CHANCE at a lower seat almost every time rather then be stuck in the balcony half the time even if you showed up every game.

I see both ways, but to me the current system is better and I know me and my friends back in the day are envious of having the ability to get low down almost every time and less balcony if you get there early.

The reality IU needs to come up with another idea different from now and especially different from what you are describing with all the no shows now. The system you are describing only works if IU is a top team which they are not right now so you would end up with even more empty seats in the lower level with others stuck in the balcony for no reason (much like how it was when I was in school).

I don’t even understand why students even pay. They already spend $20K just to go to school. Student tickets should just be handed out if wanted(especially for football). I’d put certain stipulations on it. For basketball, every single student would get to go to about 5 games. Beyond ridiculous any student has to pay. Then first come first serve and no holding seats. Not all 49,000 students are going to want tickets obviously but I’d definitely make it free. Christmas break would be a tough one but if I were IU, I’d make Christmas break games incredibly cheap. As in like $25 max just to get people there. There also wouldn’t be a reserved student section while kids are on break.

I mostly agree but if you give them away people who don’t really want them will take them and not use them/sell them. Making the kids pay something makes them vested in actually attending. I do think they should be cheap, kids who need assistance affording them should get assistance and they need to set up an online system for kids to exchange tickets and/or give away unused seats to students

They pay because in a market-based economy, a valued commodity is salable, and those sales support and enhance the viability and success of the vendor.

Too much info/too obvious?
