I love coach Knight....I am totally clueless to how so many people hate the man. He is the greatest basketball coach in history in my opinion and nobody can change my mind or poison me against him! I can peaceably co-exist with the haters, I just don't understand it!

No one can argue his accomplishments- top 5 coach of all time.

There are other things about him that are debatable

many of those are blown out of proportion.

Which ones do you think are blown out of proportion? Punching a cop? Choking Neil Reid? There is plenty of proof that he was a bully to a ton of people around him. The reason the administration hated him and vowed to never let someone like him lead the program again wasnt because of his success but because he thought he was better than them and didn’t need to do anything they told him to do. There would be all hands meetings for IU coaches and he would be the only no show. He undermined their authority and dared them to do something - he got away with it for a long time but **** caught up to him eventually

I was there for all of Coach Knight's years at IU. He was a great coach, no question. I loved and hated him at different times. I believe he was a bully and an incredible a**. But those were different times and a lot of that was acceptable back then. I had coaches who were just as bad. It didn't hurt me in the least. I think, as with a lot of things these days, you have to view him within the context of the times and not judge him by today's standards. I hope he is at peace with his history and can accept the appreciation that so many have for him. I also hope he can also accept the pain he caused to some who were not able to deal with his style of coaching. I will always enjoy the memories of those great teams and will keep those memories within the context of the time.

I doubt anyone in administration was better than him... In anything.

Puerto Rico security guard? Stuffed him in a trash can in what the 70's? Kind of tame.

RIP Neil Reed. I don't remember enough about that video to give an honest opinion...

I said many of them, and you picked a particular 2 which may not have been.

Without a doubt he was the best and the worst. Like I have said before, I have followed IU basketball since the late '50's and have seen it all, the great and the bad. Coach Knight was and is a complicated man from a different time. It's possible to appreciate what he accomplished and to not want to go back to those times. I try to not hold people to standards that did not apply to their time. Hopefully, we have learned a better way to treat people and are moving forward. One of the things that I really like about Coach Woodson is that he embraces his history with Coach Knight without being the second coming of him.

This is where I am too. I became a die hard IU fan in the 80’s because of what coach Knight created on the court.

he was an amazing coach and motivator but a giant narcissist that treated others immorally and while I am a fan of his in many ways can acknowledge he had some serious faults

The video was not nearly the worst of his treatment of Neil Reed.

CBK thought he was better then the admin... because he was.

Once any adult uses the word Bully, about another adult acting to other adults... I lose all respect. I wonder if they would prefer to scream at the sky while wearing a pink hat or if they are one of a litter of feline.

Neil Reed was a winey little ***** that didn't deserve the education he was offered at our expense.

“We’re not tough enough at any position on our team, except for Neil Reed.”

IMO, this thread has devolved -- badly.

Can't we just say say Bob Knight was a brilliant man and basketball coach, but a very flawed man -- and leave it at that?

And there's absolutely no reason for any character assassination of Neil Reed. He gave his all for IU when he was in B-Town. He's been dead for almost 10 years. Let him rest in peace.

This is the Knight thread. Not the Reed thread. Not opposed to other opinions.

Feel free to create another thread.

I mean that in the kindest way.

I never said it was the Neil Reed thread. Others brought him up -- and I didn't think it was necessary. That's why I said to let him rest in peace.

And if I want to create a thread, I'll create a thread. I sure as hell don't need your permission or say so.

I mean that in the kindest way.

I was very polite. It's the Knight declining health thread.

Sure, some bad stuff will get tossed out. It only gets inflamed when extremes match extremes.

And it's probably only inflamed when someone is in a thread looking to inflame.

Are you looking to inflame?

Debatable.  Very.
