We play only a man to man.

Pack line is a VARIATION of the man to man.  Not a STRAIGHT man to man.  There is a difference.  Jesus Christ how do you not get that.

As is this guy who scored 6 points a game over his career

But your role players need specialities. He has one and he feels a role. You don't surround Romeo and Juwan with a Davis type big guy, you surround him with a Fitzner type guy. This fit is perfect.

No it's literally not. Lol I coach the pack line, I grew up in the pack line, it's literally all I've ever done defensively.

I’m not saying Fitzner doesn’t fill a need.  I’m just saying give Davis a chance. He was recruited to do big things. He was hurt most of if not all of last season. He was tagged by Dakich as lazy, but he was indeed dealing with an injury. He looked pretty good his freshman year when he was healthy. Many of you forget some of this board wanted him playing in front of Bryant at certain times of the season.

I don't think he's lazy. My biggest problem is the defensive end. Pick and roll and pick and pop scenarios to be specific.

I just don't see how Davis fits into too many systems in 2018. The game is changing. You need five guys on the court that are skilled, athletic players that can space the floor and attack the rim. Gone are the days, for the most part, where you ride a slow, plodding, below the rim center and slow the game down to pound it inside. That's just not how basketball is played anymore. Defensively bigs in 2018 need to be able to switch onto guards, defend the pick and pop, hedge/recover, etc. That requires a certain level of athleticism.

I hate to be negative on Davis. He seems like a great kid and a kid that values playing for IU, but the game has passed his body type by. Maybe he could work in a system like Syracuse where they play zone and it would be more difficult to expose him on defense?

This.  I mentioned Davis' play really starting to go downhill as the season progressed last year leading up to when he had to have surgery.....not sure why btownqb put a 'confused' emoji on it.  Davis averaged 11.5 ppg in first 10 games and 5.8 ppg in his last 5.  Don't know when exactly the injury started really flaring up, but Dan Dakich was obviously out of line during the Wisconsin game when he went in this tirade about De'ron, suggesting that he was limping 'to get sympathy' and that 'no one cares if you limp at practice'.

Yeah, well, we ARE talking about Dakich's perspective, so there's that.

It's important to note that Davis was "slow" on defense in general, and slow to recover the pick and roll... and given the injury that he's recovering from, he's certainly not going to be any quicker for a long while. I'm excited to see what Fitzner can bring to the table, defense-wise. The very little that I've seen of him, I think he's an upgrade over De'Ron... certainly during the recovery process.

Because I'm pretty sure a torn Achilles tendon happens as one time type event. Like a torn acl.. it doesn't show signs it's going to happen before it does. So your theory of why he looked worse doesn't fit. He looked worse because he just can't defend, so we played him less.

Pack line isn't the problem. I know this because I teach the pack line on a daily basis. The only difference between regular man and CAM system is where the help is and you force them to drive middle instead of baseline. This isn't the problem with Davis.

I will be shocked if Fitzner plays ahead of Davis. Race might though..

Why?

You don't agree that Fitzner fits our team better than Davis?

I do think DeRon brings value to the roster. In a few cases like guarding Ward or Wesson we need a big who can hold his own. I may be wrong but I don’t recall MSU or OSU using those guys in the screen and roll action so I think David can carve out a specific roll without being drawn out to guard on the perimeter. I really like this rosters flexibility in guarding different lineups and it will be interesting to see how the staff manages minutes.

IMO going after Fitzner means Davis is going to redshirt.

This seems legit. An Achilles in January wont be ready by October/November...hell probably not even January. I'd recommend redshirt.

I don’t see him as a starter unless Davis is not healthy and Morgan doesn’t come back.
I don't see him starting . I see 10 to 15 minutes a game. Also, is he going to be able to defend big bodies down low? He looks really skinny.

I am trying to figure out why some people on here think a guy who averaged 6 points at St. Mary's is going to come in and start in the big ten? I think you guys expectations are way out of whack for this kid. Way out of whack. I'd say 15 mns a game.
