Hoosierfan2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 (edited) This is a great question. Rob, maybe? He seems like he'd be able to get his own shot, but I really don't know. I can't remember enough late game situations from these guys to give a good answer. If we have to go the length of the court then I say Green because he made two shots last year from beyond half court. Just reread the thread title, do you mean late game situations or situations late in the shot clock throughout the game? Edited July 26, 2017 by Hoosierfan2017 Quote
Stuhoo Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Great thread idea.Real issue for this year's team.I believe that this team will be talented.I believe they will defend.I believe there is depth. But I have NO idea who is capable of consistently succeeding in late shot clock situations. And that is a problem. Sam_Boger Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Going on a limb - Josh Newkirk. He came along at the end of last season and will have plenty of time of being at full health and confidence for this upcoming season. Or at least that's what I am hoping. lillurk, WayneFleekHoosier and Josh 3 Quote
LIHoosier Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Deron unless you need a 3 at the end of the game. Last year he showed when he got enough play, he can draw fouls and make FT's when put on the line (see Penn St game). Hopefully with an offseason of Clif he can play through contact and be a beast. Also, Deron just won himself a bad @$$ belt! He better carry that around to every game like Rasheed did after the Pistons won the NBA title. Dalton26, lillurk, kottke and 2 others 5 Quote
HoosierDYT Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 I like the idea of giving the ball to morgan in the high post with Davis in the short corner and the other on the wings. This way morgan can drive or kick out and I like the idea of letting him work Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app Josh and waitingon6 2 Quote

Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 I am all in on Davis so he is my pick. Besides him though not even close for 2nd for me....Devonte Green. Dalton26 Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Deron unless we need a three. If we need a three I could see a lot of drive and kicks instead of the typical one guy having the ball in his hands every time. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners WayneFleekHoosier and VO5 2 Quote
mdn82 Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Davis or Newkirk. I don't think Newkirk is the best option. Just think he will have the ball in his hand deciding.Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app Quote

Davis for a 2, and Johnson for a 3. I believe Archie previously said he wants us to thrive on getting to the foul line and I think Davis gives us the best shot at doing that. Dark horse is Morgan as he has a knack for getting fouled as well. ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted July 26, 2017 Author Posted July 26, 2017 I think Rojo, DG, and Newkirk will be competing for the role, IMO. The reason I think DG can win it, is because he can drive and be more apt to draw a foul. Rojo should be the guard that we kick to as our best 3 point shooter. Newkirk can be a surprisingly effective driver as well. So my answer is it'll be by committee between these 3 until someone wins the right. If no one wins, it'll be in limbo all year and it'll cost us games. I can see a guard dumping to to DD on some plays late in shot clock but not as a default. lillurk Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Recall that Rojo had a three to win or tie at Maryland this year. He's not been a great shot creator but he's always been a good shooter. If you need a jumper and can get him room, you feel good about it. Hartman could be a good candidate for a catch and shoot three, maybe a backdoor slip. if you need something going to the basket, maybe Newkirk. Early in the season his 2pt fg % was bad, but as he came along he got to the rim and finished better. Maybe Green, who showed some flashes in that area and has good vision. Morgan and Davis are likely to be one of the better offensive rebounding pairs in the league, and %wise, McSwain was the team's best rebounder last year. If a two ties or wins, shoot early enough that a second chance is possible. For his size, Morgan has good ball skills. He'd be an ideal screener in these scenarios: say his man leaves him to cover a ballhandler or shooter, I trust him to get a good look from three or otherwise make a good decision with the ball. In a tie, throw it in and see if DeRon can get to the line or finish. He's also a surprisingly good passer for his position and could make the D pay for a double team. I haven't responded in the expectations thread yet, but I tend to agree with the consensus: probably 5th-8th in conference, .500 or a little better in the B1G, a tourney seed somewhere 7-11. I have some questions (front court depth at the 5 especially, shot creation, shooting), but there's some depth and experience, as this answer implies. HoosierAloha and WayneFleekHoosier 2 Quote
Crimson and Cream Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Rob's hit a couple big shots in his career and Newkirk had that game tying lay-in against PSU last season in an eventual win. I think we'll see a lot better guard play (on both ends) under CAM. As far as who gets the last shot, it just depends on the situation. Who has the hot hand? Who has a mismatch? We'll see more plays drawn up I imagine. Some look as not having a go-to guy as a weakness, and at times it could be. But I view it as opposing teams don't know who it's going to. Often times if you have a go-to-guy he relies too much on iso ball and ends up with a bad look so I look forward to plays being run to get guys open. If you want a specific answer, I say more than likely our senior guards Rob or Josh. thebigweave, HoosierAloha and Str8Hoosiers 3 Quote
MikeRoberts Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 DeRon in the post. He should have one move that is unstoppable that we can run a play for 2-3 times a game when we need a surefire bucket Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app ALASKA HOOSIER 1 Quote
Stuhoo Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 Nope to all the options above, and it's a big deal. When we were top ten during 2012 - 2014 we had options that could create offense: Vic, Cody, even Watford in the post by his senior year could get his own shot. Then, those guys moved on and Yogi wasn't ready yet, and when him and Vonleh and young Troy were expected to score we had troubles. When Troy improved he could really create. Add Yogi as a fantastic senior? We won the B1G. Then, last year we relied on TB and a gimpy JBjr to create offense, and that did not go well. This year? I hope DeRon a little bit, but not really any of 'em. That doesn't mean we'll be a bad team, but it will be a real downside to the squad. WayneFleekHoosier, KingPG21 and hoosierpap 3 Quote
