2018 General Recruiting Thread

Okay; so taking Garland out of it, it seems to me that Phinisee and DeVoe are best at getting to the rim, Akinjo is the best shooter, DeVoe has the defensive length and Phinisee and Akinjo have the leadership gene, maybe DeVoe too.
Phinisee is in-state and Indiana Elite for AAU. That's a pretty big reason to prefer him.

Phinisee being in-state definitely makes a strong case. I think IU gets him

Yeah, they are hard to differentiate.

I will be fully trusting of the staffs decision here. I see a lot of good in Phinisee as well. I know I've been his harshest critic. It's not him, its me. I mostly think we need better (Garland/Anthony/etc) to compete with the best but Phinisee could be a good consolation prize.

Just hope we can up our level of recruiting as time goes on and all signs point to that being possible.

If Phinisee chooses us I expect us out on Akinyo & DeVoe. I wouldn't mind RP just wish we had longer to see the pg market for us unfold first.

Yogi, using the "and" sign causes some of your posts to appear blank in the app view. Just an FYI.

I can see maybe 10% of his posts. I'm sure he has good stuff to read but can't see most of it.

First, let's remember that we come to love our players for the most part. Morgan was ranked around 110, and some of us feel he's going to be our best player this year. Hartman was like 205, and when he announced he was coming back there was some whacky chatter about what it meant for our success as a team. If we pull in Phinissee, he's going to get the same love, and may be an impactful player.

I don't see us in the running for Garland. He's got his head in the clouds. Good for him, a young man with his prodigious talent can afford to think in those terms. But his interviews have him talking about "creating a super team" with other freshmen, as if maybe he hasn't realized the buzzsaw he's about to run into in college ball. He's always talking about working on his pick and roll game, because that's what they need in the NBA. The point is that he just doesn't seem dialed into his college choice. He doesn't care about candy stripes or any of that. Basically, I just don't see him being sold on IU.

Out of Devoe, Akinjo, and RP, I don't have a strong preference. Each has attributes. If I had to pick, I'd say Devoe. I'm trying to view each player as 50% offensive and 50% defensive. And Devoe has the length to help us build a shutdown defense. Let's get our work done on defense.

Again, no strong preference. Any will be welcomed.

If we land a point guard soon, do you guys think we'll put the full court press on Romeo and then focus the rest of our attention on guys in '19? Or do you think we'll keep recruiting some of the other guards we've been recruiting in the '18 class?

My plan would be shoot for the moon on Romeo/Brown and thats about it. There is also this idea that Archie may continue to load up in '18/'19 to find his type of players and not worry about transfers.Get your guys.

Like I said, the latter would not be my plan

The idea that, individually, length equates to defensive effectiveness is quite assumptive.

With all due respect, the notion that length has nothing to do with defensive potential is just wrong. I suppose you can call it an assumption, but that doesn't mean it's not true. Its basketball.  A good defender who is undersized is an anomoly. I can't even believe we're arguing this. NBA measures height, wingspan, and standing reach. All else being equal, give me the guy that appears to have the tools to play both ends. Teams know we will switch on defense. Having a 6' guy creates a ***** in the armor to be exploited.

Agree and Lol at the censored word (not the specific word but it's censorship partnered with armor)

I prefer your plan too. We seem to be in good position with several great '19 prospects, so if we miss on the home runs in this class I would rather bank the extra scholarships.

Sure, you're talking in generalities. NBA standard measurements are generalities, they're an overall guide. I'm telling you that Mike DeVoe can't defend and it wouldn't matter if he were 6'8 or 5'2 or anywhere in between or outside.

So when people throw out "I'd rather have a 6'4 PG defending than a 5'11" well, sure, if they can defend equally. But your original post said Devoe "has the length to help us build a shutdown defense." You know that because he's longer or because he's a good defender?

Sorry, no need for you to waste your time here on an argument.

With the PG spot, if we can't get the "right" guy, let's try like heck to get Romeo. Put the ball in his hands a lot unless he proves he can't handle it. Then get a bigger guy (brown/King or a big with upside) and hold the final scholarship.

There it's solved. Haha.

He's an impact defender in that he can block shots, close off lanes, make the court "feel" smaller. Can guard most 1-3's. Vs being stuck on the 1.
Size vs good defender? Most of that is athleticism, want to, and coaching.

He has the size and athleticism. It's up to Archie to teach him. I believe he has the want to.
