2018 General Recruiting Thread

Recommended Posts

Sure, you're talking in generalities. NBA standard measurements are generalities, they're an overall guide. I'm telling you that Mike DeVoe can't defend and it wouldn't matter if he were 6'8 or 5'2 or anywhere in between or outside.

So when people throw out "I'd rather have a 6'4 PG defending than a 5'11" well, sure, if they can defend equally. But your original post said Devoe "has the length to help us build a shutdown defense." You know that because he's longer or because he's a good defender?

Sorry, no need for you to waste your time here on an argument.

Length is relevant on defense, not dispositive.

If you've seen DeVoe on defense and he's not getting the job done, then that's also relevant, and far more meaningful.

He's an impact defender in that he can block shots, close off lanes, make the court "feel" smaller. Can guard most 1-3's. Vs being stuck on the 1.
Size vs good defender? Most of that is athleticism, want to, and coaching.

He has the size and athleticism. It's up to Archie to teach him. I believe he has the want to.

What makes you confident in that assessment?

With the PG spot, if we can't get the "right" guy, let's try like heck to get Romeo. Put the ball in his hands a lot unless he proves he can't handle it. Then get a bigger guy (brown/King or a big with upside) and hold the final scholarship.

There it's solved. Haha.

I would try and sell Romeo on a James Harden type role. He's the same size Harden was coming out of high school, and I think that's his best chance at big time success in the NBA. Archie can help him learn to run the point.

Watching highlights. I know the comeback to that..........,

BUT, show me highlights of Yogi or Phinisee doing ANY of the things DeVoe is doing in those highlights. It's called potential (due to size and athleticism).

Defense = Size + Athleticism + Effort + Knowlege/Smarts/Coaching.

This kid has more potential as a defender. I can't judge effort/Knowlege from tape, but I trust our coaches there.

I know that was probably not your order of important attributes but I would reverse that order to some extent.

Effort + coaching + athleticism + size = defensive

Yeah, wasn't in order. I don't disagree with the order you list. However, size allows you to do things the other 3 don't allow. Can't coach it.

I know - my brother was 6-2" and I was not. I did win a lot in 1v1 though but there were lots of blocked and altered shots.

Why?

Has three officials scheduled. USC, Florida and Wake. He likes Florida and they've been on him longest. Seems correct to think we'd have major ground to make up to take the lead. No?

I'm agreeing with you

Romeo is already the primary ball handler on his high school team. He is also a good facilitator.

I don't get all the discussion regarding RP's height. We just finished watching a 5'10" PG cement his legacy as one of the better individual players to come through Indiana. Makes no sense to me

We watched a longer, more athletic Syracuse beat us Fresh year when we were loaded. A great over performing team his senior year. And not much else.

And he's one of the best 5'11" players in the last 20 years.

I loved Yogi. He was fantastic. He was unique. And still him being his size was still a liability in ways that he couldn't help.

Defense wasn't our issue against Syracuse. Nor do I think was length. I think that game fell solely on coaching. When you aren't even attempting to get the ball to the top of the key it doesn't matter how big we were/weren't against a zone. Then when we do we have Zeller driving into the teeth of that zone. I agree you can't teach size. I think it affords advantages. So does athleticism, being a "dawg", and intelligence. I think all 4 equally can provide a perfect player. Too much emphasis on one will create many issues elsewhere.
