2018 General Recruiting Thread

your probably right. im sure im being impatient.

Nope you aren't. It's human nature. Especially after going through the ebbs and flows of the Crean tenure. I really think we will get some solid kids this year. For next year I just keep hearing how impressive Archie is around Fort Wayne. I think we get a couple of five stars. Or at least one with a couple of top 50 next year.

If it were up to Me, we would've built a new arena, switched to Nike, modernized the uniforms, play rap music during intros and halftime.

This would've been unpopular. I know how much tradition means to Indiana fans. Including myself.

But we desperately need to shake this "Jimmy Chitwood, two handed bounce pass" image that we have around the country.

I agree with this. Now, we don't need to change everything. The candy stripes and other traditions can stay, but we need to seriously have a makeover in regards to our "image".

I really think recruits see as as a school with a rabid fanbase and great campus/facilities, but that cool factor just isn't there like it is with Duke, UNC, UK.

We need things like alternate jerseys, a rebranding (I'm sorry but Adidas is a soccer brand), and more high profile people around the program. The way it seems is that recruits like us, but see us as a cool grandpa instead of that cool Uncle that takes them everywhere. I actually do think Archie recognizes this and it's why he's trying to put his own mark on IU with social media, etc. just my 2 cents.

I'd like to see comparative numbers but it seems WAY ahead of previous years. Haven't even had July evals and we are approaching 40% Top 100 committed.

Many of the so-called experts agree with you on this.  I saw one tweet they may have to cancel July evals because everyone will have already committed!!  :farting_smiley:

Guys, it's still June and you're talking about throwing away what makes us special as some knee jerk reaction. Other schools would kill to have the tradition we have. Games at Assembly Hall are very special, and should be cherished. ALL great sports teams have tradition and history. Cubs. Notre Dame football. Indiana Hoosiers.

Do you know who else doesn't have any 2018 commitments? Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas. We're Blue Bloods. I think Archie understands this, and will act accordingly.

I like this. Considering 60 top 100 players left. UK will take 7 of them, Duke takes 5, and Kansas takes 4. That should leave us a few.

What's wrong with uniforms? There really aren't many teams where I look at their uniforms and think, damn those are cool.

Style wise they're outdated.  I like them though, and I'm not just saying that because they're part of our tradition at this point.  There is nothing wrong with clean and simple.

Modernize the fit and material, fine.  Add an occasional alternate, knock yourself out.  I genuinely like our regular uniforms though.

Heres my thing with this class, its not a make or break for Archie.  His brother wasn't able to get recruits to buy in this quickly.  Its unfair to think Archie will.  2019 will be the class that really shows us the staffs chops for recruiting.

We are helped that Schilling had already been on a few of these guys, but it may not be enough.

I just don't want to see Archie make the same mistakes Crean did.  Meaning don't throw out an offer just to do it.  If we want to be elite there aren't many recruits we are still recruiting that fit that profile.  I don't want to see a class of 3 Stars just because.  Save the scholarships if need be.

^Agreed. The only thing I don't like is being told we are making excuses when using historical data to back up an argument. I fully expect us to do something we haven't in probably close to 30 years and that is get at least 2 5*. I don't think I or others are lowering the bar in the least. I like you don't want to sign kids cause people get nervous with open schollies.

He had several 5 star recruits within 2 years and 3 the next year. It did not take Sean long.

Didn't say it took him long.  It did take him more than a year though.

We should have pretty lofty recruiting expectations after the 1st year. Like crean he is being paid top 10 money. Crean never recruited like a top ten coach or even close.

I agree which is why I said 2019 would be the year to evaluate based on.  2018 is too short a window though.

Crean has nothing to do with this convo. He was fired. Other than that you said what we have been saying.

Assuming we can expect all our freshmen to be ready to contribute  we need only 1 or 2 bodies in 2018. Take the best we can get and save the roster spots.

Take 1 or 2 in 2018

then take 4 or 5 in 2019

if we have some 1 and dones in that group it will help balance the classes
