Rick Pitino 1987-1989 Knicks and 1997-2001 Celtics. A two and three year stint.

John Calipari 1996-1999 Nets. Three years.

Moral of the story. Good college coaches don't last long in the NBA.

Damn straight.
It just might be as simple as that.

He's a basketball junkie; he knows what IU basketball once was and he knows how many banners hang in AH.  He may see himself as the guy to restore the glory and hang the next banner.   He's got work to do, but the program isn't in shambles as it was when CTC arrived.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I just heard a new name from a friend in the AAU ranks.  I don't buy it for one second, but it makes some sense in a fishbowl.  Before you laugh...take a breath.  Geno Auriemma.

One of the best coaches in the entire history of the game.

However, he is turning 63 years old this week, so I can't see him being any kind of real option.

Obviously I would love to have these Donovan to IU rumors be true, as he'd be a great coach for our Hoosiers, but I can't help escape the reality that all the pro-Donovan talk is coming from mysterious unconfirmed sources on IU message boards.  All of the public discussion is spinning towards Alford, and that bothers me, because I tend to believe the national people, and the local media, are actually hearing this Alford to IU stuff.  I want Donovan, but I'm expecting it to be Alford.  Just my opinion.

I'm with ya...the BD rumors in the very least suggest there has been communication between he and IU which I think is a positive. Do I think it will be BD? If I had to put money down, I'd put it on the field. I'm also not totally sold on IU hiring Alford with the knowledge that 1)Significant number of fans would be vocally upset 2)They would have to answer questions about the Pierce situation and vouch for his character immediately...not sure IU wants to wade through that much public doubt just because he is THE IU guy out there. Maybe what they care about more than anything is IU lineage, but I didn't get that impression from the presser. It certainly was something he wanted to mention but given the last 2 hires, I think they are just as focused on coaching resume, reputation, and potential as they are IU ties.

Is anyone else hearing a lot of Dane Fife chatter???

Realistically, I wouldn't be shocked to hear his name.  It wouldn't be optimal, but I don't think it would be the end of the world either.  Somebody is helping attract good recruits to MSU.  I know much of it is Izzo,  I know some of it is Fife too!

Honestly, I could get behind that after I recovered from a slight depression. As a player he was tough as nails and I think he would be a good coach honestly. I bet IU gets someone more proven though.

I'd honestly love to have Fife. He already recruits the state better than most. And you know he WANTS to be here. That's what we need.

IU could do much better than Fife, but with that being said, they could do much worse. He really wants to be here, knows the state as well as anyone, and is a proven recruiter. However, I think everyone (fans, Glass, other CBB fans) are in agreement that IU can't take a risk with this hire and that it needs to be a home run. This has been a great period of IU Athletics overall (maybe the best ever) under Fred, but I think he knows this hire will define his era. He may be a good coach one day, but I just don't see a way where he becomes our next head coach.

I can't believe how many would be ok with Fife as a HC considering his HC experience or lack thereof. It really makes zero sense to take that risk at this time.

I agree, I think it makes very little sense given the other options out there.

Agreed on all points!

They are just talking to him, he isn't interviewing for the job as he has no shot.

Yeah, I don't get the Fife love. If he wasn't a former IU player would we even be talking about him? I suspect not.

He needs to go coach a mid major and prove he has the chops before getting a premiere job like Indiana.

But message board guys do?

Only some do. Truthfully most of what people are hearing right now is just false rumors. But there still fun to hear lol.
