Interesting. Nahziah Carter could reclass back to 2017 and join. Not sure but I'd imagine we are looking for someone.

1. Prior Dayton commit
2. Eligible for 2017
3. Decommitted from Dayton as soon as Archie left, and only then started looking at prep school and a 2018 re-class
4. Huge upside player that kinda blew up in high-level AAU ball this summer
5. Quoted as coveting an IU offer, but projected that he'd rather not wait till '18 to get one
6. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: COULD VERY WELL FACILITATE UNCLE JAY Z and AUNT BEYONCE'S APPEARANCE AT ASSEMBLY HALL!!!

Moral of the story? "When life hands Grant Gelon lemons, it may be time to make... Lemonade!"

If we go after someone it will be him. All of this could have been setup just to get him too. Grant has options already. So hopefully it all works out.

Archie has been repeatedly quoted that he prefers to have eight or nine playing rotation-level players, and we've already got at least that many for the coming year (DeRon, RoJo, CuJo, DeVonte, Josh, Juwan, Collin, Freddie, Justin). Archie has gone on to say (and in my opinion, he's right) that if you have too many players that expect regular minutes, it can sow resentment and screw up the team dynamic.

Because of this, Archie has routinely left a scholly roster spot open, or at the very least, reserved it for a red-shirt or "high upside-doesn't expect to play" type.

That fits Nahziah Carter perfectly. It does not fit a grad transfer at all.

This is my take as well. Bring in a guy like Nahziah who doesn't expect minutes right away and a couple years from now he could be a solid contributor. This is the kind of guy you take a flyer on. I've watched some videos and he isn't a Priller or April. He has skills and athleticism, which you can never have enough of.

So much of this..... I was hot when this offer happened so early. He could certainly end up a great, great shooter at a lower level school but as you said, his athleticism/defense is a major liability.

Absolutely agree.  I truly hope Gelon will find a school that will afford him the opportunity to have an enjoyable college basketball experience.  If FCTC just wasn't so consumed with using every single scholly......!  It's a damn shame that it had to work out the way it did and I hope Gelon doesn't harbor any bitterness towards IU.

Completely agree. An example of a player who never should of been recruited in first place and Crean reached as he did here way to much. There is a huge differences between a borderline top 200 3 star (ala OG, Juwan, Oladipo Etc) and a low 2 star like Gelon and April or Priller. This was one of Crean's biggest problems is he thought he could unlock talent in everyone regardless of ability and didn't get the difference between an OG and a Gelon. There is a mountain of difference in unlocking talent between a 3 star and a 2 star and I'm not sure Crean understood that till the moment he was canned.

Don't blame Gelon at all and wish him the best.

Yep. Pretty much spot on.

Since I'm originally from the Region, I was excited to see IU finally get a kid from that area again -- I believe Nover was the last one -- but then I saw who else was in the mix: UIC, Iona, IUPUI and Western Michigan. Seriously, we should not be recruiting kids who are getting that level of interest. Give Crean credit for finding diamonds in the rough in Oladipo and Sheehey, but this was a HUGE reach. I think Crean's arrogance got the best of him this time. ... Hope Grant finds a place where he can play and contribute.

Completely agree with Stu.

Grant should have never been offered, but I don't blame the kid for taking it. I wish him nothing but the best but I'm honestly glad that scholarship opened up a couple years before it would have.

I also don't believe that CAM in any way forced Gelon out of the program.  Did he have a brutally honest conversation with him?  Sure he did but Gelon also surely recognized that he was likely forever destined to be at the end of the bench.  CAM also talked of inside out (or words to that effect) when it came to recruiting the state of Indiana and some will likely use Gelon's departure as mud to throw at CAM.  But I would guess that a majority of the coaches involved with Indiana high school basketball players recognize that it was a scholly that should never have been offered to begin with.

Final comment.  Should McRoberts be offered the now open scholly?
