He has a great story. He was adopted, and a few years back, started searching for his biological parents. After locating his mother, she told him his father was someone he had known his whole life -- a man who had coached him and served as somewhat of a mentor. His name is Sherman Smith -- and he had no idea Deland was his son. The woman who he had a dalliance with in high school never told him she got pregnant. Sherman actually recruited Deland to play at Miami-Ohio -- never knowing that actually was his son. A very cool story ... https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/24505521/the-jaw-dropping-story-nfl-coach-search-family This is a very rough YouTube version of the ESPN E-60 story they did on him. This is a must watch. If ever there is a primary example of how the current IU football culture attracts extraordinary individuals, individuals that can be in so many excellent places, but are choosing IU? Here's the latest excellent example. Quote

When I told Andy Reid about my IUFB move he started gushing about Tom Allen. Then I realized that Andy didn't know and had never met Tom Allen, but knew all about him and what a great program CTA has built. Here’s my Super Bowl ring and my Emmy. Got Andy Reid, Ronald Jones, Le’Veon Bell, Tevion Coleman, Lashon McCoy, and Clyde Edwards Helaire on speed dial. Which recruits want to hang out with me now! Popular Post Mike Schumann Posted February 10, 2021 Popular Post Posted February 10, 2021 Deland McCullough was busy preparing for a divisional round NFL playoff game against Cleveland just four days away when he saw the news that Mike Hart was leaving IU. He stopped what he was doing and picked up his phone. “That was a text that I wasn’t expecting, to be honest with you,” Tom Allen said. “I was surprised. When I read it, I was like, ‘Seriously?’” https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/deland-mccullough-didnt-hide-his-enthusiasm-for-returning-to-iu-i-hit-tom-up-as-soon-as-i-saw-it/ NashvilleHoosier, 323SGrant, Class of '66 Old Fart and 5 others 8 Quote
LamarCheeks Posted February 22, 2021 Posted February 22, 2021 A chat w/ Mike. Says he's perhaps a little ahead of schedule. Will be interesting to see what happens when camp opens this summer -- will the job be his, or will Tuttle push him for QB1? HoosierAloha 1 Quote
Alford Bailey Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 I would assume Penix is the starter but you better have a starter quality backup for when he goes down. Quote

Another way of saying it: The QB position at IUFB is likely the deepest in the entire nation. We will have a top ten nationally ranked QB with college experience as our backup, and a four star as our third stringer. And a pre-season All-American at WR, and a top ten nationally three year starter TE, and on and on and on. We are gonna score a ton. HoosierTrav 1 Quote

He was highly regarded coming out of high school but he's pretty unknown at the college level. He's started two games for us, and he had a separated shoulder (I think that was the injury) in one of them. In the other one, the offense played pretty conservatively. I'm not saying he isn't good, just that we don't really know at this point. Alford Bailey, HoosierTrav and kreigh8 3 Quote

We know more about Tuttle than most about their QB2 and unless McCulley is a bust, this is the deepest and most talented QB room in the history of our program. We’ve come a long way from thr days of having to start Zander Diamont and pulling a freshman from the defense. johnsoniu, HoosierTrav, Stuhoo and 1 other 4 Quote

We’ve certainly come a long way from the days of Zander Diamont, but I didn’t say that we haven’t. I still disagree about Tuttle. He’s been in college for three years and has started two games. He played fine against Wisconsin, but the jury’s still out on whether his abilities live up to his ranking coming out of high school, or even if he’s better than Ramsey. I hope we don’t have to find out next year. Quote
LamarCheeks Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 OK. Time to get away from the Fire Archie and who's gonna replace him threads for a while and get to some real news. We are, after all, a football school. Looks as if we're losing an OL. Never started in four years and is leaving as a grad transfer. Probably figured with the Michigan kid (Zach Carpenter) transferring in, PT was gonna be even more limited. Quote

Lol Not telling anyone anything they won't expect, but the Zach Carpenter video is a great watch because of his comments on the culture at IU. He describes standing on the Michigan sideline during our game with them last year, looking at our sideline and basically thinking "Damn I wish I was with them not Michigan." We're gonna kick the crap out of Michigan as long as CTA and Harbaugh are at the respective schools. jk34, thebigweave, Hardwood83 and 6 others 9 Quote
