    2026 IUFB: CHAPTER 3

  3. Regarding contracts for each: Shanahan can leave with 0% buyout if for a NFL role or CFB HC position Haines buyout is $3M. There's a % based buyout, but $3M is the total amount based on his salary Coach Cig has made comments in the past Shanahan's goal is to become a HC and I believe Haines has said he's happy where he's at. I'd say there's a good chance Haines is to follow Cig as HC here. Just one man's opinion.

  5. I occasionally have to drive directly by the Rutgers football stadium on my way to work. There are a bunch of pole banners with the block R logo across the street from the front entrance. At the start of the school year, somebody had flipped all the pole banners upside down and one of the houses down the street had a spray painted sign hanging out of their window that said: "RU IN DISTRESS End the football program!" If I weren't driving I would've snapped a pic. The pole banners were all fixed before the UMass game lol. Too bad Rutgers and Purdue don't play this year, they may have found a way for both teams to lose.

  8. I wonder what they’re going to do with euro deals. While I supper this generally and trust the B1G more than the NCAA, I wouldn’t want to be in front of a judge explaining why a 20 year old American that rode the bench in the G-league is ineligible but a 20 yr old foreign national who spent 5 years on a pro team in Europe is eligible.

  15. That’s the world of recruiting unless you have tons of advantages. We are imo recruiting him to be the projected starter and in that case that’s the pitch and the goal for top rated players. Although, nowadays being a college star is a pretty great gig and he might want to stay longer.

  16. Yes. Even for the short period of time he was ineligible to play in games, he was still able to workout/practice with the team. Technically I think practice is about to start and before that it's all workouts. But, point is he's been with the team.

  17. There will never be an adequate or responsive enough system to enforce the cap.
    2 points
  18. It's worth googling for the full picture. The TLDR is basically implementing 5 for 5 with a 1 time penalty free transfer among many other important provisions. 5% cap on agent fees, which is the best part IMO. Also some longer term academic (10 years assistance) and healthcare (5 years assistance) support resources. Some measures to make it harder for there to be backdoor NIL payments above the cap, which is sort of the primary point of contention with the bill. The NCAA, being a monopoly, would fail to make a bunch of rules because of antitrust laws (why we see so many lawsuits now). Normally there would be an exemption like how pro sports work and there would be collective bargaining. But for there to be a CBA, players would need to be employees and that's logistically not viable for a myriad of reasons. If the bill passes, they would not be considered employees and wouldn't be able to sue, unionize, etc. Direct payments would be hard capped at $50M annually. That'd be a 22% base revenue share. Leaving plenty of profit for the hangers on of the sport and partners like ESPN. Very different split from the pro leagues that CFB and CBB feed into as developmental leagues. Our development system is much different than the rest of the world, so the NCAA sometimes sounds incoherent because of their ideals of "amateurism" (not a real legal concept) and not counting grown up Euro basketball players as pros, for example. IMO no solution will make everyone happy. I tend to agree with skepticism about intervention from Congress making things appreciably better here. My hot take is that this bill passing + continued CTE research would lead to a significant decline in the amount of kids choosing to play football over a long time horizon. Lastly, important to note that it needs to pass the House which is a much different animal than the Senate. The House is also in recess until after the midterm elections in November, so IMO it's unlikely this passes in general. But it may have a shot in the lame duck session before the new Congress is sworn in. The bill will expire on Jan 3 2027 if it's not signed into law before then.

  19. I just saw an interview from Barstool with a Senator about the bill from 8 days ago. He said they could just pass a bill that says 5 for 5 or x amount of transfers / x% for agent fees. An interviewer asked how that could work, because without the antitrust exemption, wouldn't there still be constant lawsuits? The Senator said the antitrust exemption isn't required for eligibility rules, what's in the bill from an antitrust perspective is to allow schools to have greater power in negotiations over TV contracts. Every single college football program could bind together and use their total leverage to get contracts from networks or streaming services. There's language in the bill that says if they negotiate that way, they have to have at least 1 local market where people get the game for free. In Texas there are 20 different local TV markets. So 1 would get it for free and they would sell the rights in the other 19 TV markets in Texas to Amazon, Netflix, etc. Says it will greatly increase their bargaining power for TV rights mostly at expense for fans having to pay more to watch games. He says this legislation would be the first step to Congress micromanaging college sports. There is a decent amount of political commentary in the interview so I'm not linking it here, but it's easy enough to find with the information in this post for those interested in a long form interview. It lasts about 30 minutes.

My point is that IU was in the exact same spot 2 years ago. Just because they suck now doesn't mean they suck next season. Especially with the current landscape in college football.

  22. I don't know that they have the resources since the Kevin Plank well reportedly dried up. Kinda my whole point here. They do have a better natural recruiting ground, but other than that without proper support that job is horrendous. Especially for a first time head coach, to tie it back to the original post.

Cig stated that Dolson and Whitten were a major part of the pitch that convinced him that IU was a sleeping giant. Maryland has the resources, the facilities, and the P4 stature to also be a sleeping giant, but only if they can show coaching candidates that they are willing to do what it takes to make it happen.

Maryland is a tough gig — some resources but around bottom 1/4 of the conference. Nice practice facility but their stadium/gameday is grim. Local recruiting ain’t easy with VT, UVA, and PSU right there. Woof. But, even the bottom of the B1G pays well and that job will be $6M+/year. They will need to pay someone to take the risk of that job…
