Home today, so watching Jenkins play in the Florida 2A state tournament semis and final game from last March. Interesting in that he doesn’t really look like any of their other offers. He’s a big, thick, physically-mature, not terribly athletic sort of 4/5 with a very nice skill level for his age but not a ton of projectability. His best traits are his skills: nice stroke, very nice handle, can pass it and sees the floor well. But he’s kind of a below the rim guy, he runs ok but not great. In 2 games against a bunch of kids he’s miles ahead of physically he has 1 block. Not sure the athleticism will ever be plus. Effort’s very good. If you dropped him in a college weight program in about 90 days he could hold up physically in a college game. That’s how far ahead he is. Will be interesting to see how he does in the OTE environment. Side note: the team he’s playing in the final, Santa Fe, has a ‘25 named Tate Darner, son of former PU player and coach in a million places Linc Darner, and that kid’s a nice player. 6’4”, can really shoot it, never stops moving, and is the only reason this is a 20pt game instead of a 40pt game. He’s a freshman at UT-Chattanooga and I imagine he’ll outgrow that program and be an interesting portal kid in a couple of years.4 points -

Not that it wasn’t already dead, but the NCAA has officially killed off even the slightest notion of college sports as an amateur endeavor, A player who played 2 years of professionall basketball in this country. So no weird amateurism elements to rationalize for an international kid. A straight up American Pro will now play for a college. 3 points -
Seems so. Though if we manage to get a more marquee home/home I’d feel good about that. I’d like an opponent that if we lose our season isn’t over, and if we win it’s a big resume builder. Plus a marquee opponent is more fun, gets more eyeballs on IU, and lets us sell more expensive tickets. UVA was more downside than upside in my opinion. But, if we schedule a UVA-like team that will leave us scratching our heads. Frankly I’m fine with the cupcakes until our program is more established with several high school classes integrated into the team and less portal reliance. The cupcakes serve a role when we have tons of new guys. We’ll get criticism, but if it helps us get ready, the B1G schedule will always give us enough chances to prove ourselves.3 points

While we need to make some effort with basketball, football absolutely needs to be eating first and prioritized. I know we like bball, but CFB is 4x bigger than CBB and this is our once in lifetime chance to win big in the biggest sport and change the program for decades to come. For example if there is $1M in the NIL kitty, that’s got to be going to Cig and not CDD. On the bright side, FB is the only sport with a material ROI, and if we keep building it will produce excess revenue for other sports, like bball. This is easy to see at all the football schools who are good at bball. If a school has a good FB program, that will take care of almost everything else financially. I think Scott gets this and he is getting all the right people on board, from Pam to the donors.3 points

Last year felt, in a way, like it was truly too good to be true... even understanding Cig is the real deal, a lot of our own fans expected a slight regression this year. Having a good football team is no longer just nice because it makes the wait for basketball fly by (that is true though)... IMO it's the new premiere sport at IU. And as long as Cig is here, that's unlikely to change even if IUBB starts winning IMO. I hope we do everything we can to retain his staff too, though I know some attrition should be expected. I'd be surprised if at his age, Cig jumps elsewhere when he already has it rolling here. Starting all over again with team building, meeting new VIPs ($$$), admins, etc. just doesn't seem appealing since he's already being very well compensated and in a good position to make the CFP regularly. I just hope we don't get complacent. If Cig says jump, Dolson and the rest of the AD should ask "how high?" Yep, I'd shut down the basketball program if it meant Cig lived forever as our HC too, lol3 points -

The example that immediately came to my mind, no idea why, was Kendall Brown. Played 1 year of college. Came out too early. Was a 2-way guy for the Pacers and Nets and and got kind of stuck in the G-League and signed a 2-way with the Celtics. But he’s probably 21 and after that much time playing pro basketball and with his athletic tools he’d have an impact in college. If it doesn’t happen next year in Boston what would stop him from exploring going back to Baylor?2 points -

IU has the second largest alumni association and a butt-load of money to throw around. This financial windfall allows schools like us to jump the queue into relevancy. This isn’t a fluke. As long as we keep the locker room culture going and IU remains interested in being competitive then there’s no reason we can’t be ~top 6 in the conference on a near annual basis. The Big Ten should get four teams into the CFP most years. There’s no need to go to Florida or Auburn to be in the playoff conversation for Cig. Just like how it’s become harder for IU or Kentucky basketball to pull good coaches who don’t need us to win championships, the same can be said for most SEC programs going forward. The playing field is much more even, and they don’t seem to quite understand this yet.2 points -
