  8. For your weekend amusement, I was just told by someone who has close ties to one of our recruits that Alford was at one of our practices this past week and was invited by Archie and Schilling. He says he thinks something could be in the works to bring him on board. Again, just relaying what I was told from someone who has been pretty accurate with a particular recruit's recruitment....I myself took it with a grain of salt though and just kind of laughed at the thought of it. I guess we'll see if anything comes out. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

  13. Center Grove sleepwalked its way to a loss to Lawrence Central 72 - 63. I hope our resident mailman was at the game and he can give us his assessment. I thought the entire CG team put forth a lackluster effort including TJD. They didn't seem to play with any fire or enthusiasm and were repeatedly slow to get back on defense. (Sounds familiar to many of our IU games this season doesn't it?) TJD did finish with 27 points on 10-20 from the field. I didn't include in the 20 his two 3/4 court heaves at the end of the 1st and 2nd quarters. He was 7-10 on FT; 10 reb; 2 assts; 3 TO; 1 stl; 2 blks. My scorecard tonight is even more unofficial than normal as my game stream had a lot of sputters and hiccups. CG hosts Mooresville next Tuesday. Indy Star indicates TJD had 14 rebounds.

  14. Ted Schultz - The Republic The playing status of Indiana University point guard Ali Patberg is uncertain after she separated her right shoulder in Wednesday night’s loss to Minnesota. Patberg, a redshirt junior point guard from Columbus North and the Hoosiers’ leading scorer, was injured after being tripped while driving to the basket midway through the third quarter of a 65-61 defeat. She did not return to the game. “She kind of fell on her right side and dislocated her shoulder,” said her father, Ron Patberg. “At least the initial thought was that it had gone back in place the right way, and there was no bone damage or cracks in her bone, which is a good sign.” Ron Patberg said the shoulder was separated for about 30 minutes, and that Ali was in a substantial amount of pain. “She was more concerned about playing,” he said. “That was the first thing — ‘Can I go back in and play?’” Ali Patberg had scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in 24 minutes at the time she was injured. After that, IU coach Teri Moren used a point guard-by-committee approach the rest of the game. “It was difficult to play for the first time without our point guard, and I thought Bendu (Yeaney), Jaelynn (Penn), Grace (Berger) and Keyanna (Warthen) did a good job of being able to play without our normal point guard in there,” said in the postgame news conference. “I am really proud in a difficult situation how they handled themselves. Right now, we just have to keep our fingers crossed and pray that whatever we find out with Ali is short term.” The Hoosiers (17-7, 6-6 Big Ten) have six games left in the regular season. Their next game is at 7 p.m. Monday at Michigan State in a game that will be televised on the Big Ten network. “It’s kind of up in the air,” Ron Patberg said. “They said the way it looked from a fracture standpoint, she can go out and play with it, and hopefully, it won’t pop out again, and no more damage could be done. If there isn’t structural damage, hopefully, she can get back and contribute this year.” The injury is the latest setback for the 2015 Miss Basketball since graduating from North. She tore an ACL in preseason practice as a freshman at Notre Dame and sat out that season. Ali Patberg missed a few games with an illness during her redshirt-freshman year at Notre Dame. She then transferred to IU and sat out last season. This season, Ali Patberg leads the Hoosiers in scoring (15.4), assists (5.0) and minutes per game (35.3). She also is averaging 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals a game. “It’s a setback,” Ron Patberg said. “She’s pretty torn up. Obviously, she wants to play. If she can get back, she will get back. Basketball is a physical game, and injuries will occur, and she just got on the wrong end of luck. Things like this happen, and unfortunately, it’s happened to her a little too much. But she’ll come back stronger than ever.”

North (14-5, 3-1) did a great job containing Bloomington South’s (18-3, 5-0) top player Anthony Leal, who only scored two points in the first three quarters of the game. He finished with 10 points for the game. “We had a good game plan defensively,” North coach Paul Ferguson said. “We confused them a little bit with some of the changing defenses. (Leal) started making some plays at the end of the third and into the fourth quarter and he is a handful when he goes to the rim.”

  21. Yeah, if you’re going to have an elite skill, he’s got the one to have. Great balance. Quick, simple release. Love it. Doubt if he ever gets into slumps. Handle looks pretty tight. Seems to see the whole floor. But, athletically, he’s a mile away. Doesn’t run well. No explosion downhill. Doesn’t move well laterally. We’ve all heard the comparisons to Zeisloft and Roth and Damon and Alford. He’s not as athletic as any of them. He’s really going to have to mature physically to have any chance to defend. Today he has no chance. A kid like Armaan Franklin would embarrass him. His inability to stay frontal would create constant defensive scramble situations. I would love to say I think he has a chance to be a Jordan Bohanon. I think that’s the only chance he has to play for Archie. CAM doesn’t seem interested in 6’1” guys playing off the ball. But right now, IMO, he’s got a long way to go. But that shot gives him a chance and makes him worth a follow. Does anyone know his AAU plans?

  23. I don't think it's a collapse as much as it's a mish mash of players with no leadership and pieces that don't fit. Any team that counts on DeVonte Green (and I just heard Colin Hartman substantiate as much) to play major minutes is in trouble.

  36. I didn't necessarily expect to go on a new run, but I thought MSU could be a game to build off of. Last night sucked though; effort overall was better but was still inconsistent even in the second half. Green, oof. I think the best way he could help us is as a spot up shooter taking shots that come within the flow of the offense. He's not particularly good shooter but he's too careless to be looking for his own shot and frankly sucks out loud as a primary ball handler.

  38. I believe that’s normal though. We thought when Sampson quit it was over here too. I keep seeing how lazy the enforcement is. I think people forget it’s not laziness. It’s lack of ability to prove wrongdoing or get people to talk. They have the FBI doing their work for them. Coaches can’t lie against wire taps or court entered statements. All a coach had to say to compliance prior is I don’t want to talk to you. I provided the minimum. The reason Louisville isn’t close to done is they lied to investigators. That’s where we got hammered. Except we had to change a culture. With Pitino “retired” I think they drop the show cause penalties on him and give them a couple of years. Miller on the other hand has lied multiple times to investigators and on tv. Then he has assistants getting fired and pleading guilty. I think they make an example of a top not elite program. I just can’t see the hammer dropped on Kansas. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

  40. I have no idea if Luke Brown is a viable Big 10 prospect. That said, a guy who can shoot lights out can be an asset in the right system, even if he's a bit of a liability on defense. Nick Zeisloft had defensive limitations, and there were games that he couldn't play because of it. But there were a lot of games that his ability to stretch the floor completely changed the game. Going further back, Jordy Hulls was a defensive liability, but elite shooters change the game. I would take a slow guy who could rain threes on this Indiana team right now. Athletes are great, and we obviously need them. But we're dealing with a team right now that is long on athletes and short on basketball skill. At some point you need shooters or else you end up with teams packing the lane like they are against us. Romeo would get an extra 5 points a game if the defense had to respect the 3 against us because it would open up the lane.

  41. We lost that game because we clocked out for a stretch in the first half. We had players laying on the ground waiting for the staff to bring out their blankey for nap time. We had defenders closing out with their hands in their pockets, on a good shooting team! We committed dumb lazy fouls. We tossed the ball around like we were on the playground. We played a decent second half but the damage had been done. If we defend better in the first half we have a chance to win this game. Instead, we had players just going through the motions unless they were cutting to dunk the ball. We are not smart on either side of the court (making terrible passes and losing shooters). We give effort for short stretches (typically when we play well on offense or Archie gets into them). This isn’t winning basketball and the tournament isn’t even in question with performances like this in most every conference game. Players who show a bit of pride and want to while in the game: Durham, Forrester, Phin, Davis Players who are just out there: Everyone else That’s sad Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

  43. The comments you have made here have all been finding the negative in every comment made about Brown and anti "white guy from Indiana." That's fine....but haven't you seen enough of these AAU all stars to understand that doesn't always translate to success in the Big Ten? Teams that have kids that understand how to play the game, not just the sport, succeed in college. Surely you noticed that.....last night? So you're not sold on Brown because he plays a bad schedule (so did Boyd, but you think that's irrelevant); he played well against a highly regarded player (but you heard the kid is a poor defender); and you subscribe to smaller schools with better basketball players (I didn't say athletes) is simply a narrative and everyone who sees it that way can't see the forest through the trees. Is that right? I'm just quoting you. So help me. Indiana has lost 8 of 9 games. Indiana has finished 7th or worse in the Big Ten 4 of the last 6 seasons and this will be the 5th time in 7 years; even leaving out Crean's first 3 years......with a whole bunch of AAU stars and kids who weren't gym rat basketball players from wherever....not the point, really. You think Luke Brown won't succeed.....why, exactly?

Here we go! IU Softball Set to Open 2019 Season in Boca Raton Story Links LIVE RADIO LIVE STATS WATCH (SATURDAY VS. FAU) INDIANA GAME NOTES (PDF) BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2019 Indiana Softball season officially gets underway this weekend as the Hoosiers travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to play in the FAU First Pitch Classic. Indiana enters year two under the guidance of head coach Shonda Stanton. IU will face off against five teams in the Sunshine State - Virginia, Bethune-Cookman, St. John's, Florida Atlantic and No. 6 Georgia. Bethune-Cookman and Georgia were both NCAA Tournament teams last season, with the Bulldogs advancing to the Women's College World Series. Live stats and a radio broadcast for all games will also be available on IUHoosiers.com. Connor Hines will be providing play-by-play on the radio broadcast. In addition, a live stream of Saturday's game against FAU will also be available. CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION Virginia: The Hoos went 12-41 last season with a 3-21 ACC mark. Virginia is led by third year head coach Joanna Hardin who leads a team mostly comprised of underclassmen with 11 freshmen and seven sophomores on the roster. Included in that sophomore class are Hayley Busby and Savana Avilla, who played high school softball with Indiana sophomore Maddie Westmoreland at Sandra Day O'Connor in Arizona. The biggest returning bat from last season is Erika Osherow, who hit .330 with 35 hits and 20 runs in 2018. In the circle, Virginia picked up grad transfer Allyson Frei who had a 2.53 ERA with 141 strikeouts for Boston College last season. The all-time series record between IU and Virginia is split at 1-1 with the last meeting resulting in a 5-2 Indiana win in 2001. Bethune-Cookman: The Wildcats went 31-26 last season, won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title and earned a trip to NCAA Regionals in Gainesville, Fla. Bethune-Cookman returns shortstop Jacki Smith, who was a All-MEAC First Team pick last year after batting .340 with 54 hits. Second baseman Brianna Sanders was a Second Team honoree last season. In the circle, Alexis Bermudez was named the MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year on the heels of a freshman campaign that saw her collect a 3.32 ERA with 66 strikeouts on her way to being named MEAC Rookie of the Year. IU leads the all-time series, 1-0, with the only meeting coming in 2004. St. John's: Indiana's third opponent of the weekend is a St. John's team that went 28-27 last season with a 12-6 BIG EAST mark. The Red Storm were picked to finish third in the preseason conference poll. St. John's returns a pair of First Team All-Conference honorees in reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Gretchen Bowie and Kaitlin Mattera. In the circle, Madison Morris carried the most innings last year, collecting a 4.26 ERA with 135 strikeouts in 146.1 IP. The Red Storm are under the guidance of first year head coach Bob Guerriero, who was promoted in January after previously serving as the interim as well as being a member of the staff for six seasons. Saturday's game will be the first ever meeting between the two teams. Florida Atlantic: The tournament hosts are the reigning Conference USA Regular Season champions and were picked to finish second in the 2019 preseason poll. The Owls went 30-26 last season with a 15-8 C-USA record. Seniors Madisyn Palmer and Mia Olson were both named to the Preseason All-Conference team. Last season, Palmer stole a school-record 48 bases and finished fourth in the nation in stolen bases per game. Olson comes into the year with a career 2.64 ERA with 110 strikeouts. IU and FAU have just played once before, a 4-0 Indiana win in 1997. Georgia: The final game of the weekend sees the Hoosiers face off against No. 6 Georgia, who is coming off a 2018 appearance in the Women's College World Series. The Bulldogs finished last season with a 48-13 record, including a 16-8 SEC mark. Georgia was picked to finish second in the 2019 Preseason SEC rankings while senior shortstop Alyssa DiCarlo was named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 watch list. DiCarlo bat .400 a season ago with 72 hits, 55 runs and 21 home runs. The Bulldog pitching staff will see the return of Kylie Bass (2.00 ERA, 15-3) and Mary Wilson Avant (2.26 ERA, 12-5). Georgia has taken all three previous meetings against Indiana, including a pair of victories in 2015. RECAPPING 2018 In head coach Shonda Stanton's first year at the helm of the program, the Hoosiers put together a remarkable turnaround midway through the season. After starting the year 4-19, the Hoosiers flipped the script in Big Ten play as IU swept five conference foes (Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland and Purdue) on the way to 17-6 mark and a third-place finish. The Hoosiers earned their best finish since 2011 and tied with 2011 for the most conference wins since 1994. Indiana defeated Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals before eventually falling to Minnesota in the semis. For their efforts in conference action, IU earned the most First and Second Team All-Big Ten honors since the Second Team was added in 2000. Tara Trainer and Maddie Westmoreland were named to the First Team while Rebecca Blitz and Gabbi Jenkins earned Second Team honors. In addition, Westmoreland and Taylor Lambert were named to the All-Freshman Team while Blitz was named to the Defensive squad. RETURNING IN 2019 The Hoosiers return seven starters from last year's roster: - Outfielders Gabbi Jenkins (.369, 66 hits, 39 runs, 26 SB in 2018) and Taylor Lambert (.255, 26 hits, 20 runs, 4 HR). - Infielders Katie Lacefield (.253, 37 hits, 19 RBI) and Sarah Galovich (.258, 32 hits, 18 runs, 5 HR). - Pitcher Tara Trainer leads the way in the circle after coming off career numbers a season ago (2.64 ERA, 216 K, 198.2 IP). - Catcher/Designated Players Bella Norton (.207, 19 hits, 16 RBI) and Maddie Westmoreland (.306, 48 hits, 52 RBI, 10 HR). • IU brings back five of the top six hitters from last season in terms of average, led by Jenkins. Jenkins is the leading returner from last season in stolen bases as the Hoosiers swiped 112 as a team last year, the second-most in program history and the most since 1987. • Westmoreland is the current team leader in career home runs (10) and RBI. Her 52 RBI last season were the second-most ever in a single year in IU history. • Joining Trainer in the circle are veterans Emily Goodin (2.24 ERA, 7-5, 109.1 IP in 2018) and Josie Wood (5.60, 40.0 IP). • Trainer currently sits at fourth all-time in program history with 572 strikeouts: 1. Amy Unterbrink (1983-86) 1089 2. Gina Ugo (1993-96) 664 3. Megan Roark (2003-06) 577 4. Tara Trainer (2016-pr.) 572 NEW TO THE HOOSIERS Indiana has nine newcomers to the team, including a pair of transfers and seven freshmen: • Sophomore shortstop Grayson Radcliffe joins Indiana from Marshall, the previous stop of head coach Shonda Stanton, Radcliffe started 53 games at short for the Herd, collecting 30 hits, 15 RBI and 16 runs. • Utility player Camryn Woodall joins Indiana from Utah after spending her freshman season with the Utes, playing 14 games. Woodall's younger sister Caraline was part of this year's signing class and will join the Hoosiers next fall. • The freshmen class includes pitchers Natalie Foor and Taylor Askland, outfielder Tete Hart and utility players Hope Grange, Paige Chitwood, Brittany Ford and Juvia Davis. STAFF UPDATES From a staff perspective, the Hoosiers have a few updates from last season: • Kendall Fearn and Chanda Bell have both been promoted to associate coaches. • Longtime student manager Jake Combs has been named the team's volunteer assistant coach. Combs served as the manager all four seasons of his undergrad. • Former Oregon standout and 2018 NCAA Catcher of the Year Gwen Svekis joined the Hoosiers as a graduate student manager, joining Morgan Zerkle at the position. WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2019 The Hoosiers have 56 games on tap in 2019, including 17 to be played at Andy Mohr Field. Indiana will play 17 games against 2018 NCAA Tournament participants and nine games against teams who finished the season ranked or receiving votes in the final USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll of the year. In addition, Indiana will play 14 games against teams who finished in the top 50 of the 2018 NCAA RPI. The first Coaches Poll of the year saw seven opponents either ranked or receiving votes. The Hoosiers open the season with 19 straight games and 25 of the first 26 away from Bloomington. After the FAU First Pitch Classic, IU will head to Duke for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. From there, Indiana travels to Mercer for the Black & Orange Challenge followed by a visit to LSU for the Purple & Gold Challenge. Indiana will open home play at Andy Mohr Field against in-state foe Butler on March 5. The Hoosiers return to the road that weekend to play in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase Tournament before staying in the Sunshine State for a Tuesday night doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast on March 12. IU's final tournament weekend features the annual Hoosier Classic March 15-17 at Andy Mohr Field. The final non-conference game of the season is a March 26 visit to Louisville. Road Big Ten battles include Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State. Home conference contests feature Michigan State, Purdue, Maryland and Rutgers. INDIANA TO HOST 2019 BIG TEN TOURNAMENT For the first time, the Hoosiers will play host to the Big Ten Tournament at Andy Mohr Field on May 9-11. Play in the tournament begins on Thursday with four games scheduled, Friday will also feature four games. Competition will conclude on Saturday with the two semifinal games followed by the championship game.
