Looking over the scenarios i don’t see a way we can move up to host. A game 

Maybe if Penn State absolutely get rocked but I doubt it. 
 

We need to be top 8. 

Likely 

3 Big Ten teams ahead of us 

1 independent. Notre Dame 

2 SEC teams at least 

2 Conference Winners leapfrogging us if they aren’t already ahead of us.

Purdue made a big mistake in firing Ryan Walters.  They should've kept him in for one more season.

Appy State fired its coach today. This was included in the release. 

If they're honestly expecting to compete for a CFP spot, they're gonna be going through a lot of coaches. 

Then again -- why not aim high ...

Man the more I look around the more I think Ryan Day is coaching for his job this first playoff game. Dude might have to win 2 games to be safe.

He's not a very good coach so you're probably right. Losing every year to Michigan doesn't help, especially this year when a mediocre Michigan team cost them a spot in the B1G Championship and a chance at a CFP bye.

The strength of schedule bracket would have No. 6 Purdue hosting No. 11 Florida State. .

I get what he’s saying. The SEC is a tougher conference than the ACC or the Big 12, so an 11-1 team from those conferences isn’t necessarily better than a 10-2 or a 9-3 team from the SEC. But when you lose to a 6-6 Vandy and get blown out by a 6-6 Oklahoma, you really don’t have a leg to stand on. The SEC also only plays 8 conference games. The results on the field have to matter. We can’t pick playoff spots based on hypotheticals. Nothing about Alabama this season suggests that they’re a juggernaut that deserves a playoff spot.

Who knows but I think our best case to host would be Texas and SMU winning. I'm not sure a 3 loss team will host over a 1 loss P4 school. Regardless, there's gonna be seed shuffling after this weekend.

Let's hope we get a favorable CFP ranking tonight.

That's debatable about the SEC being tougher this year. But I completely agree with what you're saying here. Especially the 8 conference games. It backfired on them this year because of the size of the conference and lack of cream rising to the top.  There's really only three schools that are clearly good enough to be in the CFP with all the other "Illini's" in the conference trying to justify worse losses than the real Illini.

In that scenario I'd prefer trips to South Bend or Happy Valley.  Penn State hasn't impressed me much this year and an in-state matchup against Notre Dame would be fun.

If we play at ND, it's possible their stadium is 50% red or more.

They probably have the least intimidating home field advantage of any "elite" CFB program.

They have our kryptonite in a strong DL though. It's the only thing that gives me pause about wishing for them. Unfortunately, the other options in PSU UGA TENN OSU all have insanely good DLs too. From a ball standpoint, I think I want PSU. From a "going to the game" standpoint, it's ND and no one else is even close.

Everyone knows the committee created this seeding system so that ND is guaranteed the 5-seed and an easy path tho the semi-finals. Almost a lock that’s where they are.

If Penn State upsets Oregon this weekend then that would move them up to 1 or 2 and Oregon most likely down to 5 correct?  I can't imagine a 1 loss PSU with a win over Oregon would be ranked behind anyone besides Texas if the Longhorns knock off Georgia.

I love hating Notre Dame because of their arrogant and stuck up fans (many of whom didn’t even go to school there), but I fear that they’re actually legit this year. Would love a first round game there though.
