(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU

I hope he has more layers to his game, other than stand at the arc.

Thats understandable but we need solid role players as well that know their strengths and stick to it. If we can have a 3 point specialist on the team that can add 4 or 5 threes a game, that will go a long way. Ive watched Ryan Cline "stand at the arc" and drain threes for Purdue this year as a freshman and its really helped them win games. I'll take that any day

Compared them right there bud.

Highlighted quote itself is just way out there on its own.

I see your point. He may not have compared the styles but did compare their potential impact. I suspect he forgot how much Dekker actually did as a freshman though.

To suggest that Dekker did not do much his freshman season besides being a slot shooter suggests that Decker had a modest freshman season. He actually had a very good rookie year

Dekker played in 35 games (3 starts) as a freshman on the Wisconsin Badgers. He is one of only four true freshman to start under Bo Ryan joining Devin Harris, Alando Tucker and Josh Gasser. He earned Big Ten All-Freshman team recognition as well as honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. He was also two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week (January 14 and March 4, 2013). Dekker scored a season high 19 points against Arkansas on November 24, 2012 and Nebraska on February 26, 2013.[4]

The comparison I was talking about was the one you mentioned, which is why I highlighted it in my quote. Going out and saying that Gelon will have the same impact that Dekker had as a freshman is a huge stretch at this point, it was back then when I first quoted and responded to that quote as well. You actually go into more detail than I am here with the whole diminishing the role that Dekker played as a freshman on that squad.

It wasn't an apples to apples comparison, never said it was. But, in making statements that Gelon will have the same impact his freshman year that Dekker did, there is a comparison between the two there. And even going off saying that Dekker was mostly just a shooter, which isn't, really true, and mentioning that Gelon is pretty much just a shooter, who knows though pretty much all we've heard about his actual game is that he is a shooter, there is a comparison there.

I want to know why you're so hell bent on this minute, meaningless point?     I made no reference to "compare" Sam Dekker and Grant Gelon.  Didn't happen.  You can twist words, avoid context, eliminate part of what I said (Kaminsky reference), but the fact remains I did not compare the two.   I DID make a direct comparison to Leary and "maybe Roth."

Dekker reference wasn't related to Gelon's ability as a player at all.   Dekker was an example I used....along with Kaminsky, which should tell you everything you need to know about comparisons....but apparently not.   I clearly wasn't comparing Gelon to Kaminsky, as they are completely different, so I wonder why you cherry picked Dekker and left out Kaminsky along with the context?  As I asked before...why are you so hell bent on this?

Someone said Gelon won't do much as a freshman.  Which is probably accurate.  My comment was simply that 1)  It's stupid to make decisions on every recruit based on what they'll do as a freshman; and 2) There are plenty of examples - like Dekker and Kaminsky - who played one role as a freshman, but grew into bigger, more impactful roles.  I gave Dekker's stats as a freshman and showed he wasn't much more than a jump shooter.  And....he wasn't.  he rarely started, played about half the game most of the time, and more than half of his FG attempts were 3 pointers.  He was little more than a shooter.  Yes, he had an okay freshman year, and I suspect Gelon will too.  He (Dekker) grew into much more.  I suspect by the time Gelon is a senior (like most players), his role will change and we'll feel differently about him than many people did when he first committed.  I never said he'd turn into Sam Dekker, plays like Sam Dekker, or will be anything like Sam Dekker.  I didn't compare the two at all.

Earlier in the thread, I said something to the effect of "Gelon is Leary and maybe Roth."  That was the comparison....not Dekker.  Dekker was an example of a different point.  It looks like you're trying to create a narrative because you've left so much out of what was actually said.  Seriously...why are you so hung up on trying to convince people I compared the two?
