michigan in 2012 finished 5th in big 10 and played for a national title.

there are always going to be anomalies but odds suggest that one needs to be a top 8 team to really have a solid chance. Uconn and a few others are the outliers.

Could we have a chance if we are they 15th best team? Yeah, but the odds aren't good and we would need all the stars to align

Its more about a team playing its best ball at the end of the year.  Rankings don't necessarily reflect how a team is playing at the end of the year.  Zellers last year we were highly ranked but probably playing worse than 2 dozen teams.

Problem is Crean historically hasn't had his teams playing their best ball in March, but more around January.  But if we can remedy that and the team gets hot next year with our scoring ability we can be right in the mix.  The Key is our defense has to improve.

I think on paper next years team is more talented, but the 12-13 team had intangibles that next years team doesn't yet. The 12-13 team was more experienced in terms of big games, had a higher BBall IQ, had much better leadership and was a more cohesive unit, etc.

The gap in those intangibles is greater than the gap in talent though.

That was a really really bad draft. So many of you guys just want to leave this out when bringing up the lottery stuff. Doesn't work that way

I tend to agree with a lot of your posts but don't get your point here. It's all relative. So there weren't as many studs in college basketball that year? Right? So then our ability to win a championship or go further in the tourney should have been better.

My point is people want to act like that team was loaded because they had two top 5 picks in a horrible draft. Look at that team on paper, they weren't actually all that great. Vic was the only one who jumped off the page, Cody was nice, but he had so many weaknesses and probably wasn't used that great. Wat, I love the dude, but man he didn't jump off the page. Hulls average athlete at shooting guard playing in a point guards body. Yogi, freshman who looked overmatched at times.

People want to say that team was loaded because they had two top 4 picks. That team wasn't that greatly talented. I get what you are saying but so many come off as saying we were absolutely loaded. We weren't

would you consider making a final 4 a solid chance to win? because if the answer is yes then there are too many examples of teams being outside the top 8 teams that have reached a final 4. Even if you dont feel making a final 4 is a solid chance to win it all there are still more anomalies that have won it all outside the top 8 teams (top 8 teams would be the 1 and 2 seeds)
1981-Indiana 3 seed
1984-nc state 6 seed
1985-villanova 8 seed
1988-kansas 6 seed
1989-michigan 3 seed
1997-arizona 4 seed
2003-syracuse 3 seed
2006- florida 3 seed
2011-uconn 3 seed
2014-uconn 7 seed
Is it better odds to be a 1 or 2 seed? of course but to say we would need the stars to align to even have a chance next year in my opinion is false. probably like every team i listed above and even the 1 and 2 seeds that have won it all a team needs luck on their side to win it (1987 elight 8 game for the old timers against LSU, Tyus edney driving layup against missouri.......and so on)

Can yall take the personal sniping to a private message? Most of us are just here to talk about Yogi (and how he's awesome, while allowing for legitimate, substantiated criticism).

On topic: I once saw Yogi walk on water. True it was a shallow puddle but he's a short guy and his ankles didn't even get wet.

Personal sniping? Did you even read the posts? Don't let my moderating (since I am a moderator and they ask me to do what I did) get in the way of the Yogi talk.

Yogi needs to do what's best for Yogi.

One has a chance at winning it all if one has great talent and great coaching, (Duke 2015, or any of IU's championships under Knight)

OR

Good coaching and optimum talent, (Kentucky 2012)

OR

Great coaching and only above average talent, (Any MSU team under Izzo)

OR

Good coaching and a tight, senior laden team with marginal talent, (Florida in 2007).

BUT, no matter what level of talent a team may possess, be it Kentucky's NBA level, or that found at Wichita State, one has exactly zero chance of winning it all with below average coaching, and that is what we all have to keep in mind. Yogi staying another season won't make Crean a better coach. Getting Thomas Bryant and possibly landing Thon Maker is great, but do any of us really believe that we'd make a run through the NCAA tournament without first having to come up against the likes of Izzo, Calipari, Krzyzewski, Donavan, Boeheim, Self, or half a dozen other "good, very good, or great coaches"? Not likely, and I don't like our chances in any of those scenarios. Talent will only take us so far, (sweet sixteen), but eventually, as everyone is funneled to the center of the bracket, you have to have someone on the sidelines who can out maneuver and out coach the other team, and I just don't see it with Crean.

No one is sniping here, more like a re-acquaintance
