Hes not getting any younger, maybe he wants to be a head coach again. Its not every coach's goal to be head coach at a blue blood program. He may be content running his own ship at UIC

Crean has been talking up his assistant coaches for a long time. He was very vocal that he thought they deserved to be head coaches so it isn't a surprise that McClain is moving on. To those saying why UIC..who cares? If he wants to be a head coach, he was probably looking for a nice place to start fresh and build a program from the bottom up

A head coach position is a head coach position. The typical job flow is assistant > assistant at better program > assistant at even better program > any HC job > better HC job. 

 

Of course, Shooter has previous HC experience, so the entry level HC job may not be as necessary.

 

And, I guess there's always the "sinking ship" analogy. If the ship is going down, get off as soon as you can.

Curious to see how this changes things though. If you watch the games and videos from practice, McClain is doing his fair share of actually coaching the team. I think with Crean and his staff Crean may be the head coach but the "coaching" duties are pretty evenly spread out between Crean, McClain, and Buckley
