Popular Post Hoosierfan2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Popular Post Posted August 20, 2017 ""After working with our team during of the first month of their tenure, our coaches met with each player to discuss their role and each player’s own expectations for the future. Grant was made aware that our staff believed his abilities were not of the caliber that would allow him to receive playing time of any kind in the future for the IU program. He asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship. The staff told him we would assist him in any way possible in finding a program that would allow him to make the type of on-court contribution he was hoping for and expecting, at another institution. He also was advised that his full four-year athletic scholarship would be honored if he chose to remain as a student at IU. Coach Miller believes honesty in evaluating talent, while often difficult, is the appropriate measure to take at all times and in the best interest of each player. We wish Grant the best as he continues to pursue his education and college basketball career."" Ehh... I don't really have a problem with that. Gelon is not a Big 10 caliber player and Archie isn't one to sugarcoat things. WayneFleekHoosier, IUsafety, mdn82 and 9 others 12 Quote
cljones1979 Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Gelon could be mad about what he was told and making it sound worse than it was. Quote
Popular Post Alford Bailey Posted August 20, 2017 Popular Post Posted August 20, 2017 Gelon should blame Crean not Archie. Gelon wasnt even close to playing at this level and Archie had to be the grown up and say no. GloryDays, Stuhoo, cljones1979 and 9 others 12 Quote
OliviaPope40 Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Looking at Grant he is not a big ten player and he was never going to get playing time and I'm sorry to say this but sometimes kids need to hear the things they don't want to hear which is the truth. Look we all know Crean should not have given him a scholarship but at the same time he thought one thing and then got told another. While I can see his point in all of this but Miller and the rest of the coaching staff made the right decision and had to consider other players who were better than he was. Quote
schoosier Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Arch was honest to Gelon and offered for him to stay at IU as a student only for free. In the long run for Grant that would have been much better option than State Fair U. WayneFleekHoosier, ElectricBoogaloo and Stuhoo 3 Quote

At least treat the kid with respect and courtesy. I imagine that I am considered a purist around here, and yet this doesn't bother me at all. Not one little bit. The coach that actually did the real disservice to Grant Gelon was Tom Crean. Grant Gelon should never have been offered a scholarship to a high major school. When Archie told him that truth in a gentle way that any college player should understand, instead of accepting it Gelon apparently informed the staff that he wanted to stay and play anyway. At that point the coaching staff told him the truth again, this time with a complete description of every detail in our policy that they would follow. You guys want proof that Archie handled the situation professionally? Rob Phinisee, who committed to Archie Miller and Indiana University today, played for the same AAU team and coach as the one who Gelon was advised by. No doubt that AAU coach understood reality far better than Tom Crean or Grant Gelon. ThompsonHoosier, IUsafety, DLG3 and 8 others 11 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I feel bad for a misguided Grant Gelon here BUT it was clear to the world that this wasn't a match. I dont have a problem at all with the way Arch handled it. He saved Grant 3 years by being honest. IUsafety, Stuhoo and Iugradman 3 Quote
WayneFleekHoosier Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I said from day 1 this was a mistake. Never changed my mind and ended up more than right. Crean would have tried to find a way to force this to work to prove himself right but to our University's detriment. I do wish Grant would have stayed on as a Student but I can understand the desire to play. Iugradman 1 Quote

ElectricBoogaloo Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Crean really f'd this one up. In the article, Gelon's high school coach says he has plenty of D1 options. So where were they? He's not transferring to a high major, a mid major, or any major. He's going to some godforsaken State Fair community college. That tells you all you need to know. Gelon had one year at a basketball mecca. I'm not saying he shouldn't be upset but he had a chance to prove he belonged and didn't get it done. Plenty of unranked guys end up on Big Ten rosters and earn playing time. Grant didn't. Time to grow up and move on. Iugradman and Stuhoo 2 Quote
Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 I have NO problem with this. Archie gave him a chance to see what he could do, but most knew he was no where near talented enough. I would have killed for his oppurtunity knowing that Ancila where I played at isn't much worse than where he is going now. He had zero D1 interest. Kid is bitter and is gonna say all the things he can about us and Archie. He was Crean's guy. I wouldn't blame any coach for this with any player. He was still going to allow him to keep his scholly and go to school. What is the problem? Quote
Yogi's Picnic Basket Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 This is exaxtly why I wanted Archie. He knows who can and can't play at this level. A shooter can't shoot if he can't do anything else. In Archie's defense I can't say a word cause like I posted awhile before this happened I would have done the same thing. Quote
Hoosier Guy Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Gelon is saying all this to grab attention. He's trying to get people to feel sorry for him. Archie did what he had to do. This all goes back to Crean anyway Hoosierfan2017 1 Quote
Uspshoosier Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 In the meeting Gelon told the new staff he deserved and felt he should of gotten more playing time last year(nothing wrong wih him feeling that way) CAM told him he didn't see that happening. He asked for release to see what other major programs would be interested. No D1, D2, or even really good NAIA teams were interested so he went to State Fair community college. Hardwood83 Posted August 20, 2017 Posted August 20, 2017 Seems he (and his parents) are griping about the way it was handled. It's not realistic they are going to publicly agree that Grant was in over his head. As others mentioned, all he did was take advantage of an opportunity. I suspect that no matter what they wouldn't be happy with the situation, which is totally understandable, but not really "news". Quote
