Have been arguing this for years. Basketball is 100% an offensive skill game. Always love hearing guys who’ve forgotten more than I’ll ever know talking like this.

Defense is essentially about effort and organization. Crean had the effort but not organization. Archie maybe had the organization. Idk but he didn’t have the effort.  Woody had neither. Because ain’t nobody tell Mike Woodson how to do anything

Athleticism is a component. But you can teach competent defense in a season.

Hate him or not, Calipari used to take talented freshman and turn them into a cohesive defensive unit by mid season almost every year. You can’t turn a player into an offensive talent overnight which is why those guys recruit offense. Oddly enough, Crean had a lot of success with the opposite strategy taking athletic effort guys like oladipo and o.g. and getting them to add offensive skills.

In any event you need to be around top ten in both offense and defense if you want to win a title. Hurleys team last year finished 75th on D and ended up an 8 seed in the tourney getting bounced in the second round.

Full story paywalled on Indy Star

Pat Knight has resigned as the men's basketball coach at Marian, a decision he says he made after "administration" told him to fire an employee.

"I quit today. They wanted me to fire a staff member, and I didn't want to," Knight told IndyStar Monday evening. "When the administration starts trying to tell you what to do, nah, I've been there before."

I always find myself rooting for Pat because I think his level of honesty is really rare, especially these days. Unfortunately, he inherited some personality flaws that have really hurt him, and he didn’t inherit a shred of the coaching gene.

Pretty straightforward:

  • We all have a boss who at some point gets to decide.
  • If you don't like the boss' decision you can say no, at the risk of being fired yourself.
  • Pat took that route, and so did his bosses.

What do you think, Demo?

This response pretty much says it for me:

Yeah, not a chance. I don’t care who it is, nobody is moving the needle 30 or 40 points by himself against a Zona or a UConn or a Michigan and doing it multiple games in a row.  Maybe he can move it 20 and if they’re having a bad night they have a shot to beat 1 of them once, but that’s as far as that goes.

Seems pretty cut and dried to me on the SGA thing. You're telling me nobody contending for a title could neutralize SGA enough to force Valpo's other 4 on the floor to beat them? No shot.

SGA's Valpo team is 20 point dogs in a Sweet 16 game if they even make it there.

Though IU and RMK seemed to mend fences before he passed, I always thought the initial separation was gonna be ugly regardless.

Had he not been fired, I think at some point, he would've resigned/retired and insisted that Pat take over.

And I have my suspicions that not many in the administration would've been in favor of that.

I often think what would have happened is Pat would have taken over and the results would have been equivalent to or worse than Crean’s first year and he’d have gotten fired, with basically the same ugly aftermath as after Bob was fired.

He’s one of the worst college coaches in the last couple decades.  6-50 in his last 2 years at Lamar.  Inherited a Marian program that was rolling and has completely tanked it, topped off by the likely the most embarrassing loss in Marian history on Saturday.
Been around him a couple of times and it’s pretty obvious why he is terrible at coaching.
Maybe Ryan Carr will throw him another basketball lifeline.
