Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

Recommended Posts

I’m actually as optimistic about this hire - more than any since RMK was let go.  He is the first legit basketball mind we have had in AH in 25 years.  I am hugely optimistic he will coach fundamentals and coach “Indiana” style basketball…team ball.

HOWEVER, until he proves otherwise, we are basically UNCLE F-ING RICO and just need to accept it.

As such, I’m gonna eat a gottdam steak at Zagrabs this Friday.  So, feel free to randomly ask strangers if they are me if you happen to be there - and I’ll buy you a glass of wine so we can toast to future good fortunes together!

He’s actually in the tournament. I’m pretty sure we can come off our high about Brownell given our coaching hire.

By all accounts he’s a solid dude and decent coach and native Hoosier to boot.

No…there wasn’t much support for him, solid dude or not.  Nobody cared that he comes from Indiana and most didn’t think much of his coaching as I remember it.

This board would have crashed the entire internet if we hired Brownell.

This board is about 10x more positive than about a half dozen text threads I have right now…lol. I’m sure this board would have circled the wagons and rallied the troops just fine for Brownell. All the stats you can pull up for Devries you can find equally flattering ones for him.  Either way, IU is certainly not above such a hire.

I hope our new basketball coach is wildly successful.

But, as an Alum, donor (very small time), longtime fan, and taxpayer, I would like to see a postmortem report on the search. (I’m not saying that it would realistically ever happen.)

I think there are important questions that need to be answered regarding our program, the athletics department, and the management and stewardship of all of it.

For example: I don’t have a good feel at all for how “well” or how “poorly” the athletic department is being run.

- Was Dolson standing in a hole dug for him by his predecessors, and he did the best he could?

- Was the search conducted well? Poorly?

- Who was interested in the job… who wasn’t?

- How was the pool of candidates developed… who was on it?

- Who was interviewed…who wasn’t?

- How and when was the final selection made?

- What were the criteria?

Dolson is at least the second A.D. we’ve had that came into the job with zero experience as a D1 AD. Is he doing the job well or not? I can’t really tell.

With the exception of maybe the Cignetti hire, I don’t think I see him doing what “good to great” ADs seem to do.

And I don’t think our goals for this search were  to get a coach that’s “better than Woodson” or to “make it to the tournament next year”. I thought we were looking for a “great to outstanding” coach that would compete for championships.

I think the primary question may be “ is this just where this once national championship level program finds itself”, or are we holding ourselves back as we continue to make some of the same mistakes and blunders?

I mean it sounds like after several bad basketball hires, we just went through a process (with tons of resources behind it ) where we hired our fifth choice. How exactly did that happen? (If it did).

Not at all sure what to think about all of this.

Yeah understand but I guess the question is why are individuals labeled as insiders? Free message board - awesome post what you think or what you hear from the local redneck car wash and let everyone have fun with it. But why act like you are hearing info directly from Dolson himself? Clearly that never happened this cycle as everyone was extremely far off (but hey things changed last second, as always).

I guess I just feel sorry for the crowd of people that eat it up with zero skepticism. Oh well, not here to cause issues. Hope Devries is successful and the fan base can fully support him when there are bumps in the road. No matter what it's better than Woodson

Glad you’re here we need new posters. Appreciate you.

Please for the love of all things holy like Indiana basketball and my gin and tonics, stop using the f*cking phrase "It's a process"...

Well it is. Wins are a result of the process.  :)

Well, IU has their coach and no amount of commentary is going to change that, so…best to let it go and get ready for baseball or golf or whatever you like to follow or do at this time of year.  Have a good weekend.  :)

Thank you! I mentioned earlier today I couldn't remember who the Turgeon shill was that came snaking in here. Add him to the list!

I thought the Turgereon guy was funny. Anyone can whip the gullibles into a frenzy about Steven’s. But it takes a little finesse to try and pass of something as ridiculous as Turgeon. Made me laugh all the way through.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I was hoping Dolson had a bigger fish, and I had become partial to McCollum.

But at the end of the day I had said consistently that I wanted IU to hire a real, legit college basketball coach that is a grinder, is a winner, and has a history of building culture and identity.

I think we've got that with Devries. I'm not 100% sure, but I think we do.

I also remember watching Drake in their conferences championship game last year and thinking, "i was we played like that and i wish we had players like that (Tucker Devries and a couple of their guards)"

But you were so sure we were hiring Brad S right?

;)

All I read is your conclusions, but no basis for those conclusions. What particular aspects of Devries’ resume are so terrible to you?

Is it:

Mentored extensively by McDermott & Altman?

Wasn’t successful at turning around a Drake team that had one tourney appearance in 47 years before he did three of his last four?

Turning a 9-23 WVU team into a 19-13 team his first year in P5 disappointing?

Too old? Too young?

Or is it “not famous enough brag to my Purdump friends and family about?”

Tell me what it is so that I can understand.

Weren’t you in my PM asking for info? Get tf outta here lol

Yeah I’m with you on a lot of this. Appreciate you posting, we all want the same thing here.

A few were outright trolls, including RTZ as evidenced by his stuff today as the DeVries news was breaking. Funny enough Chris repeatedly went to bat for him and chastised me for “crapping on” RTZ a few days ago.

I think some are associated in some capacity with the University and get a lot of value from peddling that connection here. All well and good. But they are so so soooo far removed from actual decision-makers that the information they bring can be suspect. We can question it and shouldn’t be deemed trolls

Nobody with real information is coming here to post daily about what Dolson is thinking or which way the search is leaning. That’s why I’ll put more stock into someone sharing an isolated snippet where they run into someone in the know as opposed to daily musings that end up being just their opinion.

Just responding since you asked. It’s pretty clear after this cycle and the last one how to filter the information on this free message board.
