Chris Beard - Coaching Candidate

The way I read his initial post was hypothetical. The two elite P5 jobs he was talking about were Texas and IU (if he's hired here)... and what I understood his point to be was that IF he gets the IU job and IF he screws the pooch again, he'd be done - he would have screwed up at two elite P5 schools (TX and IU)... but maybe I read it wrong.

I read it as he found a p5 job fairly quickly after the Texas firing and that it was considered his second chance and him being hired by IU would give him the feeling of almost being untouchable.  I disagree and think a second DV would bury him.

Could be... but yeah, another DV would be his end... and not sure Dolson gives him a call.

It certainly could. But in the hypothetical discussed it’s not whether it would or wouldn’t, but whether Beard felt so strongly it would that it then would moderate his otherwise poor conduct to the point IU could feel comfortable hiring him.

I’m not convinced such a rapid rise back up after the Texas incident would leave that kind of impression on him. Maybe Dolson feels differently.

Beard

Agree but it’s not beard. I promise. High donors have already said they won’t support it. I highly doubt Dolson divides that room.

don’t mean to sound rude. Apologies. I just kindly disagree that bears would be hired. That’s all

Agreed. One could argue that it would make him feel invincible and/or entitled... I haven't watched or read enough about him to get a feel for his level of humility.

That's the $100 question.  I do believe if he is given the job there might be some more talk of what happened and he'd have to own it and discuss it.  It can kind of go away at a place like Ole Miss but at Indiana it'll be brought up and it'll have to be addressed at some point to stay ahead of it.  I'm sure that'll be a discussion to be had once they decide.  They can't just ignore imo.

I’m surprised this thread is here.  0.0% chance.  Dolson/Whitten are not going to put everything on the line for him.  Donors are not going to back him.  That’s not even considering the backlash there would be from the IU community (faculty/students).  Not happening.

Mods moved it because there was so much ugly discussion that it needed its own place rather than the potential candidates thread.

The guys at peegs are saying that they've heard that IU's stance on Facial Hair is softening and he might have a legitimate chance at being a real candidate. It started a storm on this site (and others). I personally agree with you that I just don't see it having a chance of happening for the reasons you state if the administration themselves are willing to disregard his past, which I certainly hope they aren't.

In that same discussion, the peegs guys also said their information is 2nd and 3rd hand and only a very small group of people know what's actually going on in the search. They aren't part of that group.

Is there any coach who wants it more than Beard? We got a nice extension for May who doesn’t want it and Stevens in our last search. Pearl may want it as he got a little emotional beating UK talking about Southern IN basketball. These SEC guys know how compete and recruit. I would be happy with either.

It would be a big risk. He’s not my first choice. But of the coaches who’d likely leave their current gig, I’d rather take a chance on him than Brownell
Over bronwell yes but not over drew or several others

I have been surprised how heated the Beard discussions have gotten. It's been social exercise of sorts hasn't it?

I've done some self-reflection.  I identify with Beard because we are similar in age. I coached. I was an established drinker, and it earned me night in jail. I had a girlfriend that lived with me that I absolutely wanted to choke the pi55 out of before I could rid of her. Thank Jesus all the tumblers never lined up at the wrong time. I've never harmed a woman before, but it could've happened.

Chris Beard has definitely struck a chord.

Where's everybody at on Abortion? Lol

I don't really identify with him but I firmly believe everyone can change and deserves a second chance. Those that don't aren't really people I would want to be associated with. Just a very elitist attitude they have imo.

I'll go you one better: IU should've fired Knight instead of giving him the "Zero Tolerance" freebie. The we could've hired Bill Self.

Knight got the "zero tolerance" warning in May 2000. Bill Self got hired at Illinois in June 2000. If Knight gets fired in May, there's a great chance Self takes the job and never leaves.

Zero tolerance was Satan himself Myles Brands way of ousting Knight for BS grabbing that punks arm. But most importantly, moving Satan to his most cherished position and deservingly so, President of NCAA. He started the curse!

Sounds like you’re ready for 4 more years of Woody!

I mean…if Beard can change, then surely Woody can change into an elite offensive and defensive coach, right?

Hell maybe even Archie can too!
