In the eyes of the players, it wasn't just an exhibition game.

I get that and I can see how in the eyes of some fans would want to view that way.    IU didn’t have 1 single win last year against a top tournament quality team.   That’s a long time to go for fans.    The program hasn’t had much success lately so any little nugget of success is going to be ate up by this fanbase.  Just because I said it was just an exhibition doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it(watched it 3 times so far) I just put it in perspective that at the end of the day it was an exhibition game.    I always tell people before the season starts to take exhibition games with a grain of salt in the college basketball thread.    I use the example of Cuse losing to a D2 team years back and everyone in the college basketball world freaked out.   Cuse ended up in the final 4 that year

Good grief the lengths people go to on a board to get riled up.

Who cares if it was an exhibition game? It was a sold W where both teams were trying out lineups and we were down 2 likely key players and it was on the road. No one is saying it proves how great IU is, it's just a heck of a good looking start, in a game both teams were trying to win down the stretch. Personally, I enjoyed it.

Not trying to be pedantic, but the troll who regularly tries to rile people up here, IS sort of saying it proves how great IU is, declaring it will be a “loooong” season for some after one nice preseason victory. That’s all it was. Good sign… reason for optimism… definitely. Apparently AH1971’s first instinct is to find any sliver of “evidence” to throw back in the face of fans who think differently than him. Lmao. Lil guy can tucker himself out all he wants saying it after every game, won’t bother me if it means IU is winning. Beating UT was cool, but it’s October. Better hang the banner. Lol

As a fan of over  50 years, I'm definitely not getting excited about an exhibition win. However, your point of us not winning against quality teams, only strengthens the argument that these players will return to Btown with more confidence, than when they left. Who cares what the fans think about it, the 13 guys in the locker room will definitely be able to build off it. My biggest concern is still the coaching.

I'd hate to see how this board would be right now if we were like the other Big Ten teams who lost their exhibitions while giving up 90+.

I remember when we beat the Soviet National team in 75 in an exhibition game at MSA. The fans and media made a big deal about an "exhibition" game then. lol

I remember being at the USSR game in 1987 when Knight got ejected and pulled the team with him LOL "cold war stuff" lol

I didn’t watch but looked at the box score, read the Inside the Hall articles, and listened to their podcast. Glad they won, but I’m in the camp of believe it when I see it.

Definitely a WOT fan. Once I started the books I couldn’t put them down. I was actually sad when I finished the final book. It was like saying goodbye to an old friend.

The show is meh. But I’m trying to enjoy it for what it is. After season 1 I had low expectations.  Season 2 was better.

Thoughts from the exhibition:

1.) Myles Rice is by far the best player on the team. He's the one guy this team can't lose and he makes the team go. He's even better than advertised. Definite first-team all-B1G talent.

2.) Ballo is the other guy who can't get hurt. No real backup for him on the roster, so stay healthy big fella. Less offensive minded than I expected, but we were massively spoiled last year. Ware was really good.

3.) A little disappointed in Carlyle. His D was really good and he looked a little taller than I expected, but he seemed to bring very little to the table offensively. It's a night-and-day difference between him and Rice right now in that regard.

4.) Defense was really good, but Tennessee also missed a lot of open shots. It was great to get a road win, even if it was an exhibition, though. It had a big game atmosphere and I'm glad that the game was close. Great environment to get better for later in the year for the team.

5.) The big point of worry from the game is obviously shooting. Still an issue and IU doesn't see improvement in that area from the guys who didn't play due to injury.

Overall, much to be optimistic about.
