I think there’s a lot of variables , but one thing I did catch was Rabby corrected Eric saying top 15ish NIL instead of top 10 on their podcast the other day

That could explain a lot, and quite surprising to me.

IU with the 8th ranked portal class. 8 players ranked as 4 stars. That's Moneyball to me. When needing to build an entire roster, don't blow the budget on 1 or 2 5 stars, but load up on very good complementary players eight deep.

Depends on who and how much you bring back. As opposed to popular belief, not every player in college basketball is looking to move schools every year and squeeze every dime out from their university. Look (unfortunately) at our rivals to the North. Braden Smith likely would have made $3-4mil on the open market this offseason and a guy like TKR would have made $2-3mil as both project to be preseason AA's next year. There isn't a chance in hell Purdue is paying those guys $6-7 million collectively. They're taking considerable pay cuts, especially Smith, to stay at a place geared up to win a national title. The more players you keep intact, the less you're likely spending on a year to year basis.

Yea, this is unfortunate, but I see it this way too.  Another example is PU kept Edey for maybe 1/3 of what we was worth.

Guys like Smith and Edey fit so darn well there with their "Purdueness" it's not surprising they stay.  Painter has done a very good job (ugh).

I see Cig starting to do this with IUFB -- no one poached our best players or staff (Tino got a big promotion), which is pretty darn impressive for IUFB.  Admittedly our staff budget is huge, but our player payroll is still +/- 60% of the big CFB programs.

We need CDD to establish was IUBB is and get guys that fit so well it's not surprising they're going to stay for all their eligibility.  It will take some time, but I think he can do it, and it will help keep our roster costs down to some extent.

Looks like he’s been in the portal for several weeks. Gonna guess that they did some exploratory due diligence and then signed higher priorities. But I guess we’ll see.

Safe to say the "playing 2 bigs" era is well and truly dead. Doesn't appear IU will even have any true bigs on the roster!

I love that we are guard oriented...but man, we sincerely better pray that Alexis, Harris or Reed don't go down for an extended period.  I'm of the opinion we need another big, if only for depth in case the dreaded boot comes out. 2 of these guys go down...I won't say impossible but then we're in a very difficult situation...

I’m not being negative on this. Folks are saying we have a top 10 NIL budget, I’ve also seen top 5 thrown around. Our roster isn’t a top 10 roster on paper.

They never were going to have one this year. Cheaper to keep your own players. Big players don’t move much.  Ware was a malcontent at Oregon. Ballo was a roster hopper. Guys like Storr and Love were labeled malcontents and/or roster hoppers.  Those were some of the highest ranked guys.

A big NIL covers up some mistakes in roster building but you still have to somewhat build it from the round up. Even from the beginning everyone universally has said looking at the new teams last year the range of expectations is like 10 seed to 4/5ish seed, at best. So I’m not sure where the top 10 roster expectations are coming from all of a sudden.

Flagging this as a very rare post related to a transfer portal player with (very strongly confirmed) IU interest, in the "transfer portal w IU interest" thread.

I'm old and my cognitive abilities ain't what they used to be so I don't fully understand your comment.  My post was simply a direct response to a question that another poster had asked.
