Painter played Ethan Morton. Leal would absolutely play. But Painter wouldn't have ruined him and sat him for years like Archie and Woodson.

Ruined him?  He’s mediocre.  His last game when in the rotation and when it mattered, 4 points

What kind of leadership did you see from Goode last year?

Goode regularly got in players faces during timeouts / stoppage of play to pick up their intensity throughout the year. He constantly hustled when on the court, leading by example. When either team shot technical free throws last year, Goode made it a point to bring players together and literally wrap his arms around them. Maybe you missed the Rutgers and Penn State games where that was especially visible/talked about.

I’m not a Goode fan, but I dislike him a lot less than I dislike Leal. Goode played 3 years at a good program, played 20 mpg on an elite 8 team, and then joined the mess that was Mike Woodson’s basketball program. He probably didn’t know what he was getting himself into. Leal has been at IU for 5 unremarkable years. We have plenty of other guards. If you’re keeping one of them, keep Goode and then get a big with the other spot.

What I saw last year was a team that lacked intensity, consistent effort, will to win, and enthusiasm.  Bless his heart for trying, but his methods of leadership didn’t appear to have worked much of the time.  Not necessarily his fault, but if he’s coming back it should be for specific tangibles.  No one from last year’s team should be added for intangibles imo.

Is a ~40% career 3PT shooter in the B10 worth having back? Considering you acknowledge he was trying to pick up the people around him and their inability to succeed as a team is not necessarily his fault, have a hard time understanding why you’d hold it against him that he played on last year’s team (playing for IU was living his childhood dream by the way. Imagine a second chance to do that, with an actually competent coach). His shooting and intangibles would make him an excellent addition to the roster IMO.

Other than an eye test, how could you support it? Please don't say steals per game or something like that....

I value specific skills at the bottom of the bench or crazy potential/size. Leal does have one of those. This is just discussion, I'm not actually clamoring for him, but as I've stated... absolutely could end up with worse.

I'm saying he's not an elite defender.  But he is a plus defender and low volume shooter so he isn't going to waste many offensive possessions.  That said, you can't really play two guys like him at once because that means you have two players who aren't really scoring threats on the court.  Don't think he and Enright can really be on the court together much.

ummm well.... didn't he have to grab our former B1G player of the year and All-American of a coach and essentially force him into the handshake line vs... Maryland?

If by leadership you mean.... Ws/LS and results, then no, I guess you wouldn't have found much leadership from him.

So the differnce between elite and plus is what?

Don't agree with that either. Enright is very good catch and shoot, coupled with assist rate, that plays with anyone.

Now... those two can't play with Ballo, MM, and Malik...not enough shot creators.

Those two--- plus Wilkerson, TDV, and Bailey... oh yeah, that can fit just fine.

But again, I don't even want him in that role/on the court all that much. I'm really just talking about a really good practice player, emergency guy. I don't think he'll see the court much with our team we have assembled so far.

?

When IU started a little run toward the end of the year it was when they went smaller -- only one big on the floor and with Goode on the court more.  IU was 7-4 in conference when he played 30+ minutes and 3-6 when he didn't.

If a player is willing to tell his coach and an assistant coach that they need to go to the handshake line, I'm sure there's plenty of leading teammates that we don't see.

Why are you quoting me?

We went 19-13 on the season with a losing record against P4 teams. I assume that is the rebuttal we'd hear from the poster I quoted.

I'm fine if he's there, fine if he's not.  Much prefer Goode, though.

My gut says that Goode is going to get his waiver and Leal isn't FWIW.  Leal's case just isn't as strong.  Leal played games at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and end of the year.  Hard to say he was really 'hurt' for all the games he didn't play.  Goode, on the other hand, had his games after he recovered.

Another item on Goode:  he played 8 regular season games, 1 BTT, and 1 in the NCAA tournament.  I believe in figuring the 30% that the NCAA only counts regular season games.  The issue at hand IMO isn't the 30% mark, it's the fact he played the games in the second half and there has already been one ruling that would seem to favor him.

You said that Goode didn't translate in terms of W's and L's.  Fact was that without him the team would have had a worse record.  I wouldn't say that a team missing the tournament is automatically devoid of leadership.  Might not have enough leadership but that doesn't mean void.

Almost like he wasn't out there to score.

By the same token he also wasn't out there to avoid scoring.  I like what he did and feel his minutes were deserved but there were times when his not even looking at the basket hurt.

I prefer Leal. That's great Goode is going to get his. Leal has a few post-season games, too, I believe. I don't really think either should, tbh.

I agree. lol .... you didn't read that post correctly if you think I was criticizing him, you saw the sentence or two right above it when I listed an example of his leadership, yes? I know Goode is a leader; it's evident, the poster, I guess, doesn't.

Don't think he was avoiding it. But he was never going to force it. Wasn't his role.

There were definitely multiple instances last year where he actively shied away from taking wide open shots. Sequences where going up strong/taking an uncontested shot was absolutely the correct decision but he hesitated and passed it up. Not a huge deal considering his role, but…
