Who’s upset? It’s a discussion not an argument. Leal does nothing to move the needle for me. He isn’t a high D1 player he’s shown that for 5 years now. I dot really care what analytics show defensively my eyes saw he was awful and couldn’t keep even decent athletes in front of him. Leadership? Who knows we aren’t there day to day but I do know it takes someone special to get ppl to follow when you’re not even close to the best. If we add him I don’t think the sky is falling I would rather just add Goode and a center. If leal is back and we are any good I don’t expect leal to play very much so if we can’t add a center then it doesn’t really matter.

if we strike out on bigs, and its a difference of a walk on vs a scholarship player in Leal, why would we say no?  More revenue sharing for IU if we round out the end of the bench with scholarships

You watched a lot of Davidson?

No, I'm making wild assertions based on minimal information....like virtually everyone else.

However, to make it interesting, if Bailey makes first team conference all-defensive team, I will buy you and +1 a nice meal at your local IHOP (or Dennys, if you are fancy)

Certainly don't think that'll happen, but I think with as good of an athlete as he is... he'll be fine on that end. Sorry, I don't preemptively roll with the general consensus until I see it myself.

More of a "cook my own breakfast" kinda guy... blackstone, eggs, bacon, maybe sausage patties, cornbeef hash is a must, some sort of potato.

I hope you are right! You can cook me breakfast anytime...if you know what I mean (wink, wink)

Still produces great talent. Not quite the level before maybe but still high quality. I think Indiana issue has been, since Knight, trying to be like Calipari’s Kentucky without getting anywhere near enough talent for that to be successful. We have been targeting kids that #1 goal is getting to the NBA. We haven’t fostered the culture of toughness and winning. Then we don’t have the resources (especially pre-NIL) to get enough talent to overcompensate. Even then you need a coach capable of instilling teamwork and fundamentals.

The sweet spot is getting the right kids with talent that don’t have so many hanger-ons, where you can work towards the common goal of winning first and foremost and let the rest take care of itself. I envy the coaches that can get the “NBA” kids and make that work but that seems to take a success track first.

Anyway, Purdue and so many other rosters have Indiana kids excelling. They are out there, just got to have a system and a vision.

I think this is spot on.  I remember Dakich (i know but bear with me) made a comment back when they were struggling that Painter forgot  what made Purdue tough.  He said go get tough kids who know how to play fundemental basketball, develop them, and get back to winning because you are a tough team to beat.

I think the DeVries type coach can do that here as well.  Might not be instant success but a coach who is good strategically and can get more out of 4 star kids and even some 3 star ones can have more success than the coaches we have had that could land some 5 star/
McD's but was not a strong enough coach to do much more with them.

I feel pretty safe in saying DeVries will be as good as Crean was at his best but and think his floor will compare to Woodson.  That range is better than we have seen but hoping he can exceed Crean and bring that floor up too.  Too early to tell right now, but I am willing to give him some time to build a winning culture with some over achievers now and then add the right higher end players into the new culture.

That’s basically what I was getting at. I’m fine with leal if it doesn’t come at loss to our roster. For me a loss would be bringing on leal and not getting C if available. He’s obviously better and more valuable than a walk on I just hope he isn’t logging huge minutes for us or I’m afraid it will be another rough year.

I'm asking....

With what else we have... doesn't that seem realistic?

I mean that’s the hope for the year. None of us really know until the season starts I guess. Truth is we seem to have a nice collection of mid major players but are they ready to take the jump and contribute in the big leagues? Can the coach get the most out of them so even if we are less talented we can beat more talented teams? All questions that won’t be answered until the ball tips. Idk what to think honestly. We’ve been burned so many times in just kind of sitting back patiently waiting without any expectations and hoping for the best. I’m ready for IU to be back, to have a good team, to have a great coach but we’ve been through the same thing many times over the last 20 years. Coaches who we thought were locks to be the next great thing, a new year with upgraded talent that were duds, and off season expectations that seemed great on paper but were never met. Hopefully for all of us this is the year all those things come to fruition.

I think the first sentence is the talking point for fans, sure. The 2nd question he's answered that his entire career, I expect his time at IU to be the same.

That's fine if we're worried about what happened in 2000-2025, and it annoys us, idk... not really how I operate, but I could understand deep frustrations. Just ball for me, though.

"bunch of midmajor guys" that were all WANTED by other P4 and even other ELITE teams. I don't think you answered my question, but that's ok, no worries.

One thing to keep in mind with Goode and Leal's waivers:

Goode played in two games that were beyond the regular season (one BTT and one NCAA tournament game).  Leal played in one NCAA tournament game.

So in terms of regular season games, Goode played in 8 and Leal played in 9.  One of Leal's regular season games was in the Hoosier Tip-Off Classic, so it's possible that only 8 of his games counted if IU used the in season tournament exemption.

In both cases I'll still state that their coaches should have kept them out of action during the second half of the season to preserve their year of eligibility and this would all have been moot.

------------

While I'm in the camp of preferring Goode and a big as opposed to Goode and Leal should they get waivers approved, at this point the pickings left on bigs are really slim.

The first sentence answered it. Yes I hope with what we have now leal doesn’t play and is just a bench guy. Archie showed it, Crean showed it, doesn’t mean devries won’t work out just means some are hesitant. I’m not down or up on him just cautiously waiting and optimistic. The portal only brings a hand full of studs per year. What’s the chances IU got all of them? I’d say slim to none. Just because other P4 wanted them doesn’t mean they work out. Most other P4 teams needed to fill holes. We needed to fill a whole roster. They wouldn’t have been leaning on them like we are going to have to. If they miss on them it might make their team weaker but wasn’t going to cripple them. If we miss on them, since we needed so many, our year is shot. Also they didn’t necessarily need them to be the players we need them to be….for example. Wilkerson with UK probably wouldn’t need to be a stud. He was probably 4th or 5th best. IU needs him to be a dude! Does he have that in him? We all hope.

So many things and discussions none of us were privy too will lead to whether Leal or Goode are back.  I am Switzerland on them. If they come back, fine.  If they come back and play a lot, fine.  If they come back and are critical to our success this year, great!  If they don't come back, fine.  I see no reason to think they will come back and distract the team from talk about the good ol days under Woody.  I also have no idea if they will be better or worse under a new coach.

Many have left IU/Woody and done well at their next destination.  Some have not.  Did Goode get irritated with Dakich and kind of say things that were annoying.  Sure, have we in response to Dakich, yes.  Did he and Leal say things about fans we disagreed with, sure.  Were they loyal to the team and generally responsible/good stewards of IU, yes.  Can I fault them for being more loyal to their coach than to us fans, no.

Come back, don't come back, recruit boilers or wildcats or even illini.  Just get us back to being a winning program that is relevant nationally on a consistent basis.

They were critical to our success last year.  The problem was that there were other guys that were more critical to our failure.

Goode is a pretty high volume three point shooter who can hit 40%.  He is most definitely a good thing to have.  In 23-24 he was a 20 minute per game player on a team that won the BTT and went 29-9.  Not sure how we would 'be in trouble' if he played a part in the success next year.
